Gums ...... I must be loosing my touch.... Sorry about my rap attack yesterday. Actually it wasn't a rap attack. It was a grafitti tag attack. Luxembourg is quite an attractive city with its crumbly streets - but even here this Graffitti tag thing is spreading out across the city from the Bus station. Back in England, my folks had their garden wall sprayed up recently causing them mucho stresso with *something* in gold spraypaint. [They might not have been so upset if they could at least have read it] I'm all for more art - and I'm even for graffitti - if its saying something.... Theres some graffitti in Bradford which says poetically and succinctly "Its a mean old scene" at least thats saying something .....and one can sympathise.... In Leatherhead [ dont these UK places sound funny?] there was for many years some graffiti which was under a railway bridge which said "Proper back treatment for David Ansell" I never found anyone who knew who David Ansell was. It remained under the railway bridge for about ten years until it was burried under the grime of progress and the brick dust shake of trains to Victoria. Still at least it said something and made people think. Heaven knows what happened to David Ansell. Todays graffitti is truely post modern in that the message isn't important - - its almost anti graffitti in that sence. Its the medium that has become important and not the message. A while back in the Gaurdian Newspaper I read about a famous Berlin graffitti artist known as "6". Apparently and this was supposed to be true....he chose the number as his "Tag" because it was easy to spray up whilst riding past on his bycicle !!!! He proudly demonstrated the technique to the journalist! Maybe thats the reason why you cant read some of these Tags - its because they're all being written by people on bycicles... heaven help us when they get motorbikes and cars......we will just end up with a world daubed in coloured streaks...... Jackson Pollock on wheels. Closing thought then on this particular thomas dolby wall of cyberspace graffitti.....[for this will surely be posted for anyone passing to see]........ "Whatever happened to DOUGHBOY." Maybe doughboy is really 'fatboy slim?' Any good graffitti where you are in the world ? Tim. The mad geologist has been madly doing geology. Sometimes email is quite secondary, especially since I am back in Tucson doing said geology. Anyway, though I personally didn't get to go there, Siccar Point is on the Berwickshire coast approximately 60 km west of Edinburgh. It is the classic unconformity that James Hutton recognized and used to formulate his theory that rocks were laid down over long times, and that faulting/folding/resedimentation goes in cycles. I've no evidence that any significant cheese sites are nearby :) _____________________________________________________________ Dr. Barbara Cohen, lunatic bcohen@utk.edu Dept. of Geological Sciences http://web.utk.edu/~bcohen/ University of Tennessee phone (865) 974-6024 Knoxville, TN 37996 fax (865) 974-6022 Out of my mind. There's this cd he was wondering if we knew of: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Aloae4j874wal&uid=FTRALBUMS I know I can answer 'yes' to this.. in fact, much to my surprise I found it at Newbury Comics when I was staying on my own in Boston last July. This 'disky' :) kept me great company in my tiny room at the top floor of a 200-year-old boarding house each evening. The view from my window looking out over the Charles river (just past the fire escape) was beautiful, and at sunset I watched the red line trains going across the bridge to Cambridge and back. Swelteringly hot - much like today!! - but Thomas via headphones, and my pretty little view, gave a pleasantly dreamlike feeling. Also, there has been some question of Golden Age Of Wireless still being available, and I'm happy to say Thomas assures us it is... those who may still be looking can find it @ : http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=2070232245/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/dis cography.html/OrderBy=1/ArtistID=DOLBY*THOMAS/ I've just this minute bought a copy to give to my teenage nephew who is a budding keyboard/synth musician! And here is a link of my own... at the FES Gallery http://www.thomasdolby.com/gallery/gallery.html if I'm not mistaken, there are one or two images that I think may be new. In any case there are so many wonderful images here it's well worth another browse. I'm supposed to be working on a commissioned piece that's due Friday, mind you... An interesting thing Thomas mentions in the Photo Sessions part of the Gallery, about having been in a fistfight as a kid. I've always liked his appearance *a lot* (you may have noticed!)and I just couldn't imagine anything differently about him, especially his nose which I have always really liked in particular... so he shouldn't even consider the fact that it isn't 'straight', as he mentions. My own is so far from being straight, it looks entirely different in each and every photograph I've ever seen of myself. You know, there's a type of parasitic symbiote that eats a fish's tongue, then attaches itself and acts exactly like a tongue... the fish can even grasp things with it. Maybe the same thing has happened only with my nose... aliens may be involved (heeeheee :) xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 00:17:54 -0400 From: "Robin Thurlow" Subject: Alloy: "hacked" off..? (OT) Just a little note (as i don't know the real ins-and-outs of the internet and absolutely nothing of "hacking"..) There's a stalker-type on another list I visit. I've been trying to break up a fight between him and another member who is a friend, and it's pissed him off to no end. He's just emailed me privately about 'sabotaging' me somehow or other. I don't know what he means or if he can really access anything of mine (I think he's aware I know very little about the internet, and is probably just trying to scare me) but just to let you know, if you should notice anything strange or uncharacteristic happening with my website or email, it's probably something to do with this situation. xxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #208 ***************************
