I think it was Jon, also, who talked about a transglobal trip should the need ever arise -- and Robin mentioned getting together in New Orleans some time. I went to NO on business in 1996 and tried to get such an animal rolling, but apparently we didn't have Alloyites there at the time. It's either that or no one wanted to meet me! :( So don't burst my bubble. On a related note: hey Keith, do you figure the Friday morning bowling reference in ILYGB is concerning the Rock-N-Bowl? Or has that already been established. I forget. Since I keep so many things like a packrat, I still have some notes given to me by a friend at the time who knew New Orleans well. Among her recommendations: "Mid City (a cab ride): Rock-N-Bowl -- a bowling alley/dance hall where you'll see big names like THE IGUANAS or ROCKIN DOPSIE & THE ZYDECO TWISTERS. A blast!!!" I never got to go, because I couldn't find anyone who would go with me and I was a scaredy cat to run around town all alone. It was also February and they were having record lows at night.. pipes bursting all over the city from the 15F temperatures. But I confess I don't know if that reference is to LA specifically or Vegas, or where. I've already said how the album conjures for me driving in the middle-of-nowhere desert. Since living here I've become a voracious reader of all things water-supply related.. from several accounts of the Owens Valley war to the Hoover Dam and Imperial Valley stories. The St. Francis Dam site is a place I've visited several times (I don't know what I'm looking at, but the place is eerie and interesting, not only from an archaeological and geological point of view). The way this place blooms with water brought from hundreds of miles away -- the chutzpah of the men who THOUGHT of it, much less made it happen... it's hard to hold it against them, much as you know how ridiculous the whole thing is. With apologies to those of you not from the USA (hope you don't find this too boring), I've become aware of one (of many) big difference between the east and west coasts. I've known it the entire five years I've been here (moved from Virginia) but could never put my finger on why the people are so *different*. In his book, Bill O'Reilly said all his transplanted eastern friends feel the same way, and they conclude that friendship is seen differently in the two places. For example, your "best friend" in the east is someone you've known all your life, or at least many years, and in LA, it could be someone you've known three months. Then if you go your separate ways for whatever reason, you find a new "best friend" fairly quickly. I've been wondering lately if, putting two and two together, the mind set of Angelenos is that of their feeling more temporary to their surroundings, than say, New Yorkers would feel. In NY there's a sense of history, and longevity. NY isn't going anywhere. LA could disappear in an instant with a big earthquake, or with some major water catastrophe. Does this make any sense? Sorry for rambling. Is this a unique scenario to the USA or does it happen in Canada, or UK, or other countries too? Wonder if there are people in the Kazakhstan highlands who "just don't understand" the people on the prairie. :) Elaine an eastern girl who can't seem to become a Californian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2001 10:27:14 -0700 (PDT) From: Elaine Linstruth Subject: Re: Alloy: Thomas in drag? > In front of a packed and expectant Club Lingerie crowd, this bizarre > creature stumbled onstage clutching an inflatable synthesizer (true!) and > blasted through "Ferrari", "Pulp Culture", "Hot Sauce" and the rest... > leaving the sweaty crowd stunned, bemused, and uncertain what it was they > had just witnessed. How sad that not even a Lost Toy Person snapped a picture. I wonder what they were expecting -- did they stand back like "what the heck is this" too? Btw, what's an inflatable synthesizer? Did it work? Was it just a toy prop? Elaine ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2001 15:17:52 -0400 From: "Mary A. Brown" Subject: Alloy: Eventual Meet Hey Elaine (and y'all), Woohoo! However, it's not open mornings (or wasn't in June '96) so TMDR would have taken some poetic license (surprise, surprise). Ooops, sorry, Keith, didn't mean to interrupt and answer your question... Europa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2001 13:37:21 -0600 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Alloy: Eventual Meet Thanks for interrupting my answer, because I didn't know the answer. Even though I grew up in Louisiana, I've only been to New Orleans twice. It is a 5 hour drive from my home town, so it wasn't exactly a quick trip from where I grew up. It was an even longer drive from Ruston Louisiana where I went to college, so I never went after leaving home. The only times I've been to New Orleans was during the 1984 Worlds Fair (still in High School) and once I stopped and went to the aquarium on the way from visiting relative in Meridian Mississippi to Houston Texas where I lived at the time. So, I've never really done the New Orleans thing (up all night on Bourbon St.). If I even go near Louisiana, my time is spent visiting friends and relatives in the north part of the state. I guess I'll just have to sneak down there some time and not tell the relatives :). So, thanks for the answer, because I just didn't know. - -Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary A. What a great town! Where do I sign up? Music is everywhere.. for every taste.. and Crackers would have a field day with all the accordian cajun music there! What if we could convince Thomas to stop by and pick up a keyboard!!?? That would certainly make the trip more enticing for anyone who was indecisive! Ahh well.. I guess it's Friday afternoon and I'm dreaming.. After driving to the Keys, driving to New Orleans would be a cakewalk! I think it would be a great location (and I'd finally get to take rolls and rolls of b/w shots of the funky cemeteries there.) The thought of a gathering is very cheering after a rotten, evil, horrid week at work. Thank god, "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" was on tonight. I'm drinking hard cider, listening to ABBA Gold, really loud, on my headphones. Robin, Elaine - if either of you gets a drunken call from someone screaming the words to "Mamma Mia," it's me! ;-) Cheers, Melissa, thinking Guy Pearce is a very, very pretty drag queen ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #203 ***************************
