Did y'all know that a new version is being made right now up in Canada? I just read about this on alt.showbiz.gossip (one of my favorite places to hang out) Strange cast: James Caan, Lukas Haas (the kid from Witness), and Lisa Bonet. But it is being directed by Philip Haas, who directed Angels and Insects, so, who knows? Anyway, I figured this would interest some of y'all. If this was mentioned in that previous conversation, please forgive me - I was a little out of touch at that point! Not sure of where it was actually filmed though. But im sure there is somepne out there who will . Also - a big HELLO from me to Tom Trudell - welcome , and yes they are a nice bunch - ive been only a member for a few months , and they dont appear to bite -- yet -- and if you think it rains where you are , come and try the North West of England -- maybe play a Tom tune for us all on your programme . My first guess would be that 4-5-2 is the frequency of Radio Caroline, 452 kHz (kiloHertz, or kilocycles if you prefer). However, that frequency is well below the AM broadcast band (or Medium Wave band) and above the Long Wave band (153 to 279 kHz). However, being a "pirate" station, it perhaps occupied that frequency at some point in its career--I imagine most radios capable of receiving MW and LW can also receive the frequencies in between. Another possibility is that 452 is the wavelength of the signal. Stations are sometimes referred to by wavelength rather than by frequency. 452 meters would result in a frequency of about 663 kHz, within the AM broadcast band. The Radio Caroline website (http://caroline.uk-plc.net/) has a history of the station in its various incarnations, but little information about which frequencies it used. It was last heard on 558 kHz before it ceased operations in 1990. Of course, Thomas could have just made up the number because it sounds good. :) Thomas recorded "Radio Silence" during a period when Radio Caroline had gone dark (1980-1983) due to its ship sinking during a storm, so the inspiration for the song--or at least its title--is somewhat obvious. Currently, Caroline programming can be heard on satellite as well as the Internet. There is also a "Caroline South" broadcasting in the FM band to Southern France and the Italian Riviera. Its last ship, the Ross Revenge, is now open for public tours, and occasionally special broadcasts are performed from it. If I remember correctly, there were a couple of performances and the best were stitched together for Live Wireless (a shame that the comment of "What's it called then, Tom?" was snipped after TMDR says that the song he's going to perform was originally done by Joni Mitchell and it's not called Woodstock). And I suppose you do know that TMDR's dad is in the "Science" video, wearing jet powered roller skates? Oh, and welcome, guys, it's always good to meet more fans! I too kept 'loose tabs' mainly because right after high school in '86 I moved to NYC & lost touch with the space-time continuum (otherwise known as putting myself through art school!) I did walk down to the Village as often as I could back then, to explore all of those little music shops hidden away in the upper floors of buildings. I couldn't purchase the magazines I wanted then... though I'm making up for it all now thanks to eBay I think!! But I usually heard new music at friends' places or in music shops, & had a rough framework for what Thomas was doing musically at any given time back then. It was still fairly vague due to lack of personal ownership of the records... again made up for the moment I could! One of the first things I did when we got our very first computer several years ago (a Mac SE30 with a tiny B&W screen!) was to seek out any information on what Thomas has been up to, since it dawned on me I hadn't head about him in music news for a while, and I could do a "search" for him on the "internet". Ooooh! (LOL... :) I remember how thrilled I was to find the beautiful old FES site as well as the now-deceased AOL 'Hyperactive8!'. It was clear from these two sites how much Thomas enjoyed and appreciated hearing the thoughts of his fans. I also had the great pleasure of reading for the first time about some of his projects and collaborations that I'd missed... such as his Guggenheim exhibit which I wish desperately that I'd seen! I was completely amazed. xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #189 ***************************
