But start with the chainsaw *off* or your neighbors will stare! Hmmm, a good idea in principle but we won't have a lawn until the tree's are cut down! Catch 22! I must admit that I have already been observed doing the 'chainsaw shuffle...' The nearest neighbors are about a quarter mile down the shore so I'm pretty safe on that account but I will still have to face the choice comments of my ma-in-law, sister-in-law and wife and that's plenty believe me! It's a good idea to practice though. If you keep both hands firmly on the noisy bugger and keep it as much at arms length as possible it should be pretty difficult to cut anything off that has a pulse. Kickback is a bit unnerving but almost completely avoidable if you follow the rules. Yesterday evening I went out and got myself enough safety equipment to protect the important bits. I've now got a Darth Vader helmet that should allow me to butt that chainsaw back down if needed! Ian And Crackers! > When we started our set together we opened with nuvogue. IMO there is probably a bit of truth in both. Think of the youthful shot of Thomas with the small bow-tie and then think of Howard Jonesin about 1984. There were certain similarities and the time was certainly right for a mix-up. > Hey, Crackers - it could be worse! Tossing in my 2 cents.. What a great extension for another great interview segment! That was quite funny.. Thanks for the laugh, Thomas! And thanks for the continuing interview.. Jon! Robin.. you should definitely visit N'Awlins when ever you possibly can. It is one of the last unique American cities left.. IMHO.. And there is music all the way down Bourbon Street.. even if touristy.. it is certainly great to wander down the street from club to club.. and hear blues to rock to cajun to country to soul to disco.. it is amazing.. and you don't even have to enter the clubs.. you can just stand in the street and hear the music swirling in the air.. sometimes mixing into some very interesting musical montages.. Austin, TX is also good for music. I spent a month there once on a job and went to many different clubs.. heard many different types of music. And the strange thing was.. I'd go into a club.. the place would be packed out.. SRO.. and people would actually be LISTENING! It was amazing.. instead of the usual drunken cacophony.. you could actually hear the music! I loved being there.. but made far too many trips to the home cooking diner type restaurant that also had live music in the back room.. a different act each night. Anyhow.. the music was great.. and so was the food.. it took me six months to lose what I gained there in one! Great idea for an Alloy meeting.. Keith! I am usually not too keen on meeting up with a gang of people.. it's just not in my nature to be a "member" of anything! But I must say that an Alloy meeting would certainly not lack for entertainment! I would try to attend if it were an actuality.. hmm.. Okay.. Crackers.. thanks to you I will now have to try and figure out how to listen to an MP3.. it all sounds confusing to me.. alas.. it must be a phobia. I'll be heading into lurk mode for a couple of weeks.. I am scheduled to start work tomorrow prepping a music video for an Italian singer.. Laura Pausini. I'll attempt to find a minute to send you all an update.. but sometimes I get buried in 16 hour days and by the time I get done all I can do is collapse. Have a good weekend.. everyone.. and ciao for now.. Mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 09:19:24 +0100 From: "p.latham2" Subject: Re: Alloy: mistaken identity! Actually I realize you weren't totally kidding, but I had to remember that the Beatles listened to Pet Sounds and were evidently scared by the Beach Boys' eclipsing of them, and "borrowed heavily" for Sgt. Pepper. Or would that fall under the sincerest form of flattery being imitation. I don't think I'm speaking too much out of turn, they freely admit this (albeit decades later), right? So when I thought Apple Venus I sounded like Sgt. Pepper, and it turns out Sgt. Pepper sounds like Pet Sounds, well.. that's what took me so long. Anyhoo, they're all good albums. :-) Elainie this message powered by Ziggy Stardust at maximum volume (as the back cover suggests for optimum listening pleasure) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 14:08:09 -0700 From: Jon Drukman Subject: Re: Alloy: The news & the latest At 01:51 PM 7/19/2001 -0700, Elaine Linstruth wrote: >Actually I realize you weren't totally kidding, but I had to remember that >the Beatles listened to Pet Sounds and were evidently scared by the Beach >Boys' eclipsing of them, and "borrowed heavily" for Sgt. As much as I'd like to participate, I've officially become an old fart, for I have no "latest" favorites. The only new (to me) music I hear nowadays is Raffi or in some tv commercial. In the interest of saving those of you in this boat the embarrassment of being first to admit it, I'll take the plunge. I'll be today's poster-girl of questionable musical taste, and list what's in my car right now: Recurring Dream - Crowded House (well that one's okay) Eagles - Hotel California (picked up a thing lately for "Victim of Love," what can I say) Soundtrack from the movie Fame (oh man how embarrassing is that) Soundtrack from Boogie Nights (had a hankerin for some crap, I guess) B-52's - Cosmic Thing (well that's not so bad, either) Synchronicity by the Police (see final Lasik complication diagnosis for explanation on that one) The Corrs - Forgiven not Forgotten (is that bad? I'm not sure, I really like "Heaven Knows") and Willie Nelson - 16 Biggest Hits So, as you can plainly see, I am a geek and should fill my changer with TMDR. If it weren't for him, I'd be unredeemable. I noticed that too (I like crossbows :) It registered with me as a symbol of the camera being just as much a predatory weapon, in the context of the story, since he grabs both at the same time. The absence of it later might have been a technical necessity. Thomas is running around outside on the city streets, & maybe he didn't want to be arrested! Incidentally the guy in the video is a former Japanese soldier (played by Ryuichi Sakamoto) who was stranded on an island for years after WWII ended, not knowing it was over & staying on guard in case of invasion. In the video which takes place many years later he is trying to go about his life but can't escape his past experience or the 'cult figure' status it brought him.
