How did you first come to be a fan of Thomas Dolby? Our fellow, long-time Alloyite Jon Chiddick very kindly arranged with Thomas to do a personal interview a couple of months ago, based around the most pressing questions of Alloy's members. It's being published here in sections so please stay tuned for more. So far the first four parts have been posted & are archived @ http://www.smoe.org/lists/alloy/?N=R I think the dates would be 7/8, 7/1, 6/24, and 6/18 (though I may be off by a day either way on each) I would have to look back through & see if the question of officially releasing rarities or new material has come up yet in the series... I know it's something we're constantly wondering around here though. From previous statements he's made, I don't think there's anything in the works just yet on either front... but hope springs eternal. Robyn wrote: > Shame on you...::shaking finger:: I'll have to think of something. ;) Ohh, can't wait to hear what you'll come up with..! Maybe record a particularly *evil* song for me in the Tape Swap :) And speaking of which, so far it's just Robyn and me trading mix tapes of our latest favorites. Anyone else want to put their name in to trade with another randomly selected Alloy member? all are welcome!! It's a fun chance to hear what others are listening to lately... and our members have such good and widely-varied tastes, it's bound to be interesting. xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 09:42:05 +0300 From: jonathan.chiddick@nokia.com Subject: Alloy: Stuff Hi all, firstly congrats on the arrival of Eric and happy belated wishes to Paul. > Can anyone give me a straight answer to the question of what exactly > Thomas was meaning when he said may the Cube be with you ? Cubes have been around Thomas' work for a long while. I've pondered this one for a while and can only guess that this is one of those abstract concepts that artists slip into their flow from time to time. I think the earliest occurrence of the cube was in late 1983 with Dolby's Cube: Get Out Of My Mix / Get On Out Of My Mix and the only time that it appears in a song is May the Cube Be With You from the Aliens CD where the cube was a pleasure drug. George Clinton was in the forefront of this so you fill in the gaps yourself. Hahaha! Nice one Mary! That's the problem with the digest version; you miss the chance for a fast retort. It was exactly what came to my mind too. I just > love being a collector. > > Congratulations, a piece of history indeed! As I already mentioned this is quite rare on CD. You mostly find it as a cassette as when Cripuscule released this it was intended to be like a audio magazine so the format needed to be inexpensive and 'handy'. The CD version was release later but has exactly the same content with without the hiss! There is some really way-out experimental stuff on there I can tell you! Some of the original recording quality leaves plenty to be desired and makes Thomas's efforts with Airwaves sound mighty professional in comparison. - - one more whole in the collection plugged. Greetings new person whose hasn't got a name... > From: Bluemeitz@cs.com > Subject: Alloy: dolby question.. > > any chance of new material from Mr. Dolby? Or a boxed set of > hard to find items? I don't know when you subscribed to this list but if you got back to the archive and read the last three weeks Monday postings you will find parts of our discussion transcript which mention about new work. Check through that. It should be of interest. > will dolby video for close but no cigar ever appear on vhs > compilation or dvd? The answer to this question appears in two of three weeks in the Monday mailing so I'm afraid that you will have to wait and see! Welcome whoever you are. How about revealing something about yourself! Cheers all. - -Jon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 09:31:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Barbara Cohen Subject: Alloy: Golden Age of Video *for sale* Hi all, I have a PAL-format copy of Golden Age of Video. I was keeping it because it was a brand-new case and using it to house my copy that Robin made for me from laserdisk :) but I got a regular VHS copy on eBay recently so I can give up my PAL case, and videotape. Anyone here want it? I'll be in merrye olde Englande at the end of August so I could mail it to you from there..... _____________________________________________________________ Dr. Barbara Cohen, lunatic bcohen@utk.edu Dept. of Geological Sciences http://web.utk.edu/~bcohen/ University of Tennessee phone (865) 974-6024 Knoxville, TN 37996 fax (865) 974-6022 A polar bear is just a rectangular bear after a coordinate transform. _____________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 13:34:11 -0400 From: "Chris & Beena Cracknell" Subject: Re: Alloy: Stuff - ----- Original Message ----- > the only time that it appears in a song is May > the Cube Be With You from the Aliens CD where the cube was a pleasure drug. Or perhaps TMDR used his time travel skills and had a Mac G4 Cube computer LONG before anyone else had one. The song was then inspired by the games he played on the futuristic yet to be invented computer.
