Here is some Dolby stuff I've just found online : "On the Def Leppard, "Pyromania" album, Booker T. Boffin is keyboard-specialist Thomas Dolby. He did some keyboard parts on Pyromania, but due to contractual obligations, his real name couldn't be printed on Pyromania." ( http://www.inthe80s.com/mustriv.shtml ) You've got to pity this bloke's bad taste : "Thomas Dolby - Aliens Ate My Buick (CD) (EMI): If I could put into words how bad this this - how sophmoric, how over-produced, how utterly embrassing this is - the words would make women sterile and grown men cry. I made myself listen to this 1988 clunker (which basically sunk Dolby's career) and the whole time I was moaning "ouch....ouch". When Dolby's not trying to out-swing Joe Jackson's Jumping Jive he's thinking Prince's funk-lite is still cutting edge. If I ever hear "May The Cube Be With You" again, I swear, I'm going to poison the water supply. It's too late for me -- I've been exposed to this sonic virus -- but you, my dear dear friends, can save your very souls by promising never to even gaze upon this frisbee from hell! The horror...the horror..... I'm torn between keeping this in the reviews archive and burning my computer." ( http://www.oldpunks.com/punk12.htm ) Oh dear oh dear oh dear, what a sad man! I'm down to a pack and a half a day :) Oh, but the urge to pull his statements apart piece by piece is so hard to ignore... I'll just have to sedately reiterate my old mantra that you should know a bit about music (or anything) before you go about criticising it. As with any mantra of course, there's the risk of it becoming autobiographical.. and I don't want to sound snobbish for having studied music formally in the past. Even though I come from a different musical background & tastes than many though (as a child, listening to Velvet Underground, classical, motown, bad lounge music, and anything else that came our way from family friends giving their old record collections to us...) I still lack an understanding of so many musical forms that I feel I know very little. I think the best anyone can hope to be is observant and objective as possible... and this guy at OldPunk isn't. It's his own personal web page, and I'll go to my grave defending his right to review & say whatever he pleases.. but I'll also defend my own right to say his reviews really suck. To get some background on where this person might be coming from in terms of musical taste and awareness, I read the page Andy linked us to. It's clear that to a large degree he's fallen hook, line and sinker for any and all hype attributed to these records/acts... both commercial and street hype, which is very sad for a so-called 'punk' to not think for himself, as I'd always thought this was the point to begin with. (oh no, this *is* turning into a rant after all... I can't control myself.... Andy, you've made me fall off the wagon! :) I'll stop now... but one final thing, at ( http://www.oldpunks.com/punk12.htm ) the gentleman says "The Gate To The Mind's Eye. The film is visually stunning but Dolby's score is hack commercial electronics." ... need i say more... everyone's entitled to their own stupid opinion though (how's that for a slogan!) I'm sorry... returning to her wagon now... xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 15:03:16 -0400 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Re: Alloy: Beach Music Top Ten List Merujo wrote: > Which Dolby recording is most "beach > friendly"? So much of Thomas' music is what I think of as "winter music" or "night music" (...don't ask :) that it's hard for me to picture most of it in hot sunny weather. I guess Windpower is fairly beachy-feeling, as is May the Cube be with You. That's where I'd start to get my Dolby "beach groove" together I think..! Other must-haves for the beach would be a little Royal Crown Revue I think... definitely some Clash from their spanish/reggae-inspired period... just anything fun, funky, or moody/drifty like that. I've also heard some great lounge music my student assistant brought in... it even had a fuzzy leopard print cd case! That would probably be perfect for the beach too. No idea what it was called but it was a collection of various artists & original hits. hope this helps establish the mood :) xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 16:05:42 -0400 From: Julie Sweeney Subject: Alloy: Inc. (in a Jimmy Buffett vein) ~drawing a blank from here on out~ Melissa, I agree about the Buffett being necessary. There's something about being on a Florida beach that requires his music, even if you wouldn't ordinarily listen to it. Make sure you have a fried grouper sandwich while you're there, with a cold beer (or several). Might sound a little weird, but it is truly delicious. What about your reading list? As critical as the tunes... if you want to be topical, check out a Carl Hiassen novel (they're all set in Florida). He is completely WACKED but a lot of fun. Have a blast!! The lame answer is that I would take 10 custom-made mix CDs. But since I'm able to take more than 10 on the drive, here are the non-mix CDs accompanying me: Tori Amos: To Venus and Back Art of Noise: The Seduction of Claude Debussey Depeche Mode: Exciter Thomas Dolby: Hyperactive (Remix/ Import) The Fixx: 1011 Woodland New Order: Substance Orb: The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Underworld Huh. Can you guess what decade I grew up in? I guess that's actually 13 CDs since some are 2 CD sets. All the better for long drives. Everyone is welcome to crash with me for a cheap vacation in Hawaii! I'll be in Honolulu....! _____________________________________________________________ Dr. Barbara Cohen, lunatic bcohen@utk.edu Dept. of Geological Sciences http://web.utk.edu/~bcohen/ University of Tennessee phone (865) 974-6024 Knoxville, TN 37996 fax (865) 974-6022 The universe is simple. Can you guess what decade I grew up in? I guess I would have to agree that Substance would be an excellent choice. One of the classics. The TMDR album would have to be Aliens simply because of My Brain Is Like A Sieve. Got to be a beach song if ever there was one. But another one that is TMDR related which would probably end up on that old Ghetto Blaster would be the Prefab's "The King of Rock and Role"....Has anybody seen the video?....Not quite beach but certainly summertime.... However, I would probably get annoyed if this did happen, as I bugs be big style when people take their stereo's to the beach for everyone else to hear too! God I sound old!
