Amazing interview with Thomas - Thanks to all involved. I 100% agree Screen Kiss, Budapest and I love you Goodbye. I also still think the piano version of The beauty of a dream from the close but no cigar single is awesome too. Screen Kiss, Budapest and I love you goodbye all have that 'cinematic' feel that love so much about his music. 2). XTC - Yes the TMDR connection is fascinating and I too have Wasp Star and Apple Venus. Colin Moulder sounds a bit 'Chas and Dave' on some of the tracks! On the subject of XTC - I wonder if any of their fans ever came across 'The Cleaners from Venus' - an obscure band who did some stuff with Andy Partridge and Captain Sensible just up the road from me at Ridge Farm Studios in Capel near Dorking, Surrey, England. 3). The Fixx ! - Reach the Beach was one of my favourite albums. I am still blown away by the backwards sounding guitar riff on the slow track 'Washing'. I spent many years driving around listening to that Fixx album. 4). Congratualtions Andy J. for winning the competition. 5). Re: Bruce Wooley and the porn thing. Is that why his band was called the Camera Club ? - no seriously ! its worth a wonder......" A good spanking for you Wooley" [Quote from between Tracks on the Album]. All this nonsence reminds me of why 10CC were called 10 CC and also of the origins of the name Steely Dan. 6). Andy J. commented about people reading stuff on the alloy Directory on the Net. Good point and I'd like to add to this: I found the archives by chance the other day and didn't know that all the messages were archived publically on the net...... Call me dumb but I thought we just got them posted to the list only. I did'nt realise they were posted up for all eternity for anyone else to see......even non alloy folk. [ Quelle horreur !] I wonder if this is a good thing ? I can see some benefits - i.e. Jons pre interview search for questions prior to his search for truth with TMDR. However I can also see some bad points. I'm going to think twice in future before I say I'm off to Bruxelles on Thursday....... I'm trusting of the Alloy folk ......but I'm not so sure I'm keen on anyone from outside the comunity having access to all the archives. A quick look through back to the early days for example told me about Robins crumpled poster arrivals......and Thomas's email address at Headspace. paranoia and everything...... is it wise to make all our small talk available to anyone ? Any thoughts on the value or merits of having the archive publically available like this ? Do we get a choice? Is it really necessary or sensible? How many find the list this way etc? 7). Because I have been away - I'd just like to say I missed what happened to Mary and so would like to take this opportunity to wish her good luck with the operation if its not to late. And a speedy recoverey if this arrives post op. 8). Thanks once again to Thomas and Jonathon for the Interview. Tim in Luxembourg city p.s my real surname is not Hudson its dsklffpfiwrfbw7ywerfwerujzscinsky OK ? Seriously thinking about crawling into a shell if every comments is publically archived. Sharing stuff with like minded people via the list is one thing but sharing stuff with the Ultra right Shania Twain Terrorist wing of her fan club [for example] or the Nig Begs Kajagoogoo freedom for peroxide party urban guerillers is another entirely. I guess we will all have to become terribly Politically Correct and how dull that would make the list? I'd like to hear Thomas and Bjork for example but I dont want to engauge in a 3am phonecall with some Icelandic fishermand 100 Km north of the Faroe islands to talk about it particularly...... Well actually that might be fun but you know what I mean. I wonder has anyone been hassled off the the list because of comments non list members have read in the archives? bye from Lux ......er better make that Luxor. However I can also see some bad points. I hear where you're coming from Tim. (Nobody expects a Spanish Inquisition!) All I can say is that from what I know of the ever gracious Jeff Wasilko, and I'm sure Robin will agree, (Jeff's the gentleman who offered Alloy a permanent home at smoe.org) is that he does work hard to ensure that Alloy's (and other smoe-hosted lists) digests are not laid prone to all and sundry. In fact a cursory search on Google turned up no direct links to the list's archives at all. Please don't think of Alloy as 'anything you say can and will be held against you', think of it instead as a small dimly lit alley of archives that only someone intent on learning of Thomas' works might come across. Just to test my theory I did a search in Google for +"tim hudson" +"alloy" and I only got two hits - One was the AGENDA ECONOMIQUE / ECONOMIC AGENDA Avril / April 2001 The other was about an Auburn baseball player who prefers alloy metal bats. I've done vanity searches (searching on your own name) in the past and the only Alloy related thing that came up was Beth Meyer's virtual cocktail party (still there after all this time). I think your past is fairly secure and hidden away. Only those seeking out TMDR via SMOE.org will actually see our posts - and who wants to wade through all of that besides us? This is an excellent way of describing it. As far as I'm aware, none of our members has been contacted privately/harassed because their posts were read at the Archive. We once had a harassment problem years ago with someone who'd joined the list and started behaving abusively toward other members (I touch on this in the FAQ) but it had nothing to do with the archive, and the matter was quickly solved. All non-member posts to the List are bounced to me which avoids the problems of bulk mailings, adverts, chain letters and so on. Most of the people who join us have found Alloy through links at the FES, or have been referred by Thomas or other members personally... never once because they've stumbled across the archives (it would be interesting to take a little survey in fact ... how did our various members discover Alloy? :) Alloy is free for everyone to join, there's never any sort of 'pre-approval' thing at all, so I'd say the Archive has the same degree of public access as you see right here amongst our members. I hope this makes you feel better about the archived posts... it really is safe to speak freely here as you would amongst friends. xxxx Robin T who's had her entire mailing address published here & has had no trouble resulting from it ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 10:12:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Brian Clayton Subject: Re: Alloy: The news & the latest > > Last night I was amused beyond amusement to find that Bride of Aliens Ate > > My Birthday Cake was listed with CDDB. IIRC I spotted the URL for Thomas' site on the liner notes for The Gate To The Mind's Eye CD. This must have been around 1996. When I visited the site, I found the Tap Room and began visiting regularly during my lunch break and chatting with the folk who hung out there. Then Paul announced the launch of Alloy, so I subscribed, and when the Tap Room finally closed its doors for the last time I remained on this list, though quite a few regulars in the Tap Room didn't, so we lost touch. That's about it.
