Makes me think about moving back to Adelaide so I can get a bunch of people together for a wineries tour in the Barossa or Vic (after drawing lots to see which poor sod is the nominated driver and has to remain stark raving sober while the rest of us put the wobbly boots on). Quite a laugh actually; starts out at the first winery with everyone polite and reserved making muted appreciative comments about whatever they've just tasted, and steadily degrades to the nth winery where they could almost serve you $1.99 screwcap carpet cabsav and everyone would be going 'hey this sh*t ain't half bad!! Gemme a case o' that too wudjamate?' In the politest possible way of course... eeehhhwell maybe you had to be there... P. Hey, Paul! *When* I make it to Australia (not *if*, mind you!!)... I met this bloke in Tbilisi, Georgia last November - Aussie guy who co-owns a bunch of gold mines in Georgia with a Georgian guy I know. Richer than god, apparently, and utterly down to earth. All he wanted to talk about was how good the grapes were this time at his vinyard. I have an invite to come down (its somewhere not far from Sydney, if I figured it right) bring friends and hang out and try everything they make. You'll have come down from Brisbane!!! Still collecting mileage for the free first class ticket to Australian (I'm hovering on the brink of free business class right now, hee hee...) Speaking of forgotten interviews, I thought I read recently that the whole stage fright thing was more about Andy being just plane tired of touring because their contract demanded too much of them and they were not really getting much out of it. But then again, they now are with a new label and I guess they haven't resumed touring, so who knows. Speaking of three letter English bands from the late 70's. I caught ELO's Storytellers on VH1 last night. Jeff Lynn said that he dropped out of ELO after the Time album because it was last album of a demanding contract with his record label that required too many albums. Damn labels and their screwy contracts. I just picked up the new ELO album Zoom (in case any ELO fans out there were not aware - there is a new album - first in 17 years). Not bad - sounds very much like ELO should sound. - -Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Will Crewdson" To: Sent: Saturday, June 16, 2001 7:06 AM Subject: Alloy: Re: XTC > > Forgive me if I'm barking up the wrong eccentric English new wave tree but > I'm sure I read somewhere a while ago that Mr. Dolby was actually asked to > join XTC as singer at some point in the 80s. Can anyone clarify this or am I dreaming? you are correct. it's detailed in the xtc "song stories" book (which i have read cover to cover about 10 times, it's fascinating!) anyway the story is: andy partridge suffered debilitating stage fright on the english settlement tour and decided to call it quits. it's hard to be successful without touring, however, and this has been a real sticking point between andy and the rest of the band, andy and the management, etc. they eventually got a US-based manager who tried to "trick" andy back into touring by suggesting that the other two members go out on tour with thomas as lead singer! (this was leant authenticity by the fact that thomas had wanted to be in the band back whenever). andy said, well, maybe i can go too and do one or two songs per night. the manager said, you can do them all! and andy realized he had been tricked. oh well... i think it would have been really cool if any of that had come to fruition. - -jsd- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 16:48:11 -0600 From: Beth Meyer Subject: Re: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V6 #152 Hi, folks; It's Saturday, I'm supposed to be doing work (now that the expected baby is medically considered done but still on the inside at the moment, I have a lot of work to catch up on), but I had to de-lurk for this... I've been spending the past week at work with my mental life constantly accompanied by selections from the Sesame Street "Learning to Share" video (featuring not only the signature "This is Elmo's Train" but an Andrew Lloyd Webber-style dramatic reprise of same). But even this is far, far better than the "Super Duper Pooper" song from Milena's Spanish-language potty training tape -- if there's anything worse than having a toilet training song stuck in your head, it's not even being sure of the words because it is in a language you don't know well. Let's see, it goes something like this... (Something something) super dooper pooper (Something something something)-dad No panales, (something something) (Something) felicidad... Hmm...guess it loses something without the tune. Anyway, this is about the worst thing I have ever gotten stuck in my head, commercial jingles included! Actually, that one had particularly occurred to me as well. Or else, maybe the song sifted out of your brain and into mine (didn't have that far to go, geographically). Can I put my name for that one as well, and if I should happen to end up with the prize, I share it with Keith? :-) (To be honest, I forgot what the prize was -- I'm just in it for the fun of it.) The city is literally lousey with them. 5% of them are really cool and the other 95% are pretentious as all get go. Hamilton also has the highest number of working musicians per capita of anyplace in Canada. I think the reason for both is because it's much more impressive to say "I'm a musician" or "I'm and artist" than it is to say "I'm unemployed and on welfare".
