I used to really like the Thompson Twins but haven't listened to them in a loooong time so it's not that I think they sound alike here. But, we're running out of early songs to guess at! :) Maybe one of the Twins was from Milton Keynes? Oh, I do remember when I had hair like the one guy, Tom maybe? The shaggy curly do. Also, on one of our many trips through central New York, we were listening to TT, and somehow got to singing, "Cows, cows, cows, yeeeaah, they're gonna get you / Cows, cows, cows yeeaah, they don't forget you." This weekend I'm going down to Chattanooga. I keep hearing what a nice little town it is, and this weekend is their Riverbend festival where I will get to see The Fixx, the only other mailing list I'm on :) Also, there will be fireworks at the end of the night and to pass time between the Fixx and fireworks I'll probably go try to stomach the Starship show. I never really liked Starship (or J. Starship) the 1st time around but what the heck, it's all included for one price. Plus I'll get my yearly dose of funnel cake. *B* _____________________________________________________________ Dr. Barbara Cohen, lunatic bcohen@utk.edu Dept. of Geological Sciences http://web.utk.edu/~bcohen/ University of Tennessee phone (865) 974-6024 Knoxville, TN 37996 fax (865) 974-6022 Radioactive cats have 18 half-lives. _____________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 13:10:18 +0000 From: "Tim Hudson" Subject: Alloy: master tapes / Nigel Bates PPG programmer/Live aid offer Hi, I remember reading a few months ago - or maybe longer that EMI had moved from one of their long established Offices after many decades. At least I think I did. I might have been dreaming it..... But it made me wonder what happened to the original master tapes for Thomas's work? After the nice suprise last Xmas with the baking etc.. I just wandered whether EMI were taking care of the old Ampex properly...... I also read in Studio Sound recently an article by Barry Fox on all the new formats that are coming out like Super Audio CD and DVD RW for audio etc etc [ there are quite a few ]. It looks like we will be in another BETAMAX V VHS or videodisc V Video tape style consumer war. One of the new formats being presented was a surround sound remix of Tubular Bells which an engineer/producer had rescued from some box long since abandoned. So all this got me wandering whether EMI had custardy of the Tapes and whether they had been digitaly remastered for security. In fact whether they had been stored properly or even lost by now? I dont suppose there is anything anyone could do if they have been lost but I would like to think that if EMI wont invest in a remaster for security then they should at least let Thomas sort something out. Maybe he has ? Perhaps its none of alloy lists business - its just that if there is to be at some stage in the future a re-release of all the EMI back catalogue on a new format such as DVD wouldn't it be nice to think they could do justice to the superb work on the originals rather than embark upon a bake and rescue operation? On a different subject ...... I have an interesting magazine interview with Nigel Bates who was one of the original programming gurus of the PPG Wave 2.3 synth and Waveterm. He did a lot of the samples found on stuff by Frankie goes to Hollywood and also one of my fav bands from that period Properganda [ dont hear much about them anymore do you?]. Nigel Bates talks fondly about the PPG and say how its still capable of doing stuff that you cant on other synths. He also mentions that he has a database of samples and mentions that the Waldorf Microwave XT synths have the same wavetables as the PPG. He says it has all of the wavetables in all of the PPG synths right from the Palm through to the Wave 2.2, 2.3 and so on. All this I thought might be of interest to Thomas and anyone else interested in synths. Nigel Bates moved abroad and lived and worked in France for a while but is now back working in his home studio in Sussex in England. [ I think its Burgess Hill]. Nigel Bates also worked as a programmer for Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran, Howard Jones and Kajagoogoo. If anyone would like to see the full article and a picture of him looking very bald and thoughtfull on top of a Mackie mixing desk ! Please let Robin Thurlow know and I will scan the article and send it to her. I dont have a web site so I cant put it up anywhere but I could send it by email. He's also got an EDP Wasp - which was an old favourite of mine with a flat mettalic strip keyboard with yellow and black keys. - Great fun for noises. These are quite in vogue again now. To close, I have 3 180 minute VHS video tapes of Live Aid and I must dig them out to see if Thomas is pictured during the Bowie set. I haven't watched them for a while though and I expect the tapes are all sticky !! [ joking] I seem to recall the Thompson twins played Washington when Thomas was on stage with David Bowie and Mathew Selligman { at least I thing Selligman was on bass ]. If Thomas is on the tape I will offer the VHS tape to anyone on the list if people want to make a copy. I cant do copies because I only have 1 Video player. But if lots of people want a copy of the Live aid set [ its a bout six hours plus of just about everyone who was anyone I'm happy to send out the tapes in good faith] I recall George Michael and Queen being on form and a Noisey Powerstation in the states without Robert Palmer :-( ...Also the Who jumping around as the sound kept messing up. The Beach Boys ....... Phil Collins flying out on concorde and the rather sad Led Zep performance....... But Bowie as far as I can recall just took total command and the sounds and drones at the start of Heroes brought a huge welling up of goose bumps and emotions........ Bowie was just so totally authoritarian and commanding he had everyone in his grasp completely it was mesmeric. We can be heroes - Just for one day. Awesome. What a great feeling everyone had that day. Have a good weekend, Tim. ___________________________________________________________________ To get your own FREE ZDNet Onebox - FREE voicemail, email, and fax, all in one place - sign up today at http://www.zdnetonebox.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 09:14:48 -0600 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Alloy: master tapes / Nigel Bates PPG programmer/Live aid offer - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Hudson" > Perhaps its none of alloy lists business - its just that if there is > to be at some stage in the future a re-release of all the EMI back catalogue > on a new format such as DVD wouldn't it be nice to think they could do > justice to the superb work on the originals rather than embark upon a > bake and rescue operation? > > On a different subject ...... > To close, I have 3 180 minute VHS video tapes of Live Aid and I must > dig them out to see if Thomas is pictured during the Bowie set. It must be approaching the 20th anniversary mark. Was it 85? I'd also like to see The Golden Age of Video (with A&H videos included) and Live Wireless remastered onto a DVD. They'd easily fit on one disc. I distinctively remember the first time I heard them. I was washing dishes and listening to the college radio station at Louisiana Tech. This was back in the late 80's around the time Oranges and Lemons came out. The DJ was playing a lot of XTC songs and I just loved them all. That was the summer I learned of this thing called "alternative musicJ" and never looked back. If you like Apple Venus (there are two of them) you should check into their Skylarking, English Settlement and Oranges and Lemons CD's. You won't be disappointed. If I'm not mistaken, didn't I see in an interview with Thomas that he used to go watch them before he was known just praying that something would happen to the synth player so he could step in and play with them? Forgot where I read that. It may be on the ThomasDolby.com site. I think TMDR did collaborate with Andy Partridge of XTC on something.
