Jon D... congratulations on your show!! I wish I could have attended, as I love what I've heard so far & would be interested to hear a live performance. I hope it all went well. Will... you are much too kind ~ thank you for thinking of me. I would love to hear your new cd! That is my correct address on the Tommy mailing. If you think Rachel Stamp might be interested in any US dates in the future you might wish to consider The Haunt http://www.thehaunt.com/booking.html which is the only club of its kind in the area, and so always draws a great crowd for special events! M.L.... for voting on SBMWS as the song originally written for the Thompson Twins... whoa!! :) (mind boggle..) I really admire your thinking. This song became such an immediate and distinctive 'calling card' for Thomas himself, it never even crossed my mind at all as a possibility, but wouldn't it be *fascinating* if it were the one!! Ian... yes, definitely avoid going to the biker club in obvious drag! It's more a sort of inner, psychological fear we're going for, not the sure knowledge of being beaten to death and becoming a curiosity item for the local forensics team :) But I do agree with Jon... there's no real way to avoid the kind of dread that comes from having your work put up for comment/criticism by the masses (or in your case, admiration & praise :) And here's another thing to bake your brain a bit... I think in creative work, it's rough if they don't like it, but perhaps even more rough if they *do*. At least if they don't like it, you've still got a clean slate to work from for your next projects. If they do like it... you've suddenly got a lotof people expecting things of you for your subsequent work, and the fear is there that the 'compare/contrast' thing will inhibit your ability to move on to whatever you would have done next... in this way praise can really get in the way of the natural progression of your own work. So read the reviews (because you will naturally be curious to know what people are saying!) but don't take *anything* they say to heart. Reviews are a mere curiosity and should never be used to gauge oneself. xxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 14:41:11 GMT From: hubcity@exit109.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Contest etc > M.L.... for voting on SBMWS as the song originally written for the Thompson > Twins... whoa!! :) (mind boggle..) This is where I think we can all pull the wool over our own eyes - Thompson Twins were pretty versatile (as is Mr. Dolby) and it's almost easy to envision them covering all kinds of Thomas' stuff, so I can definitely get behind them wrapping themselves around "Science"'s brand of cha-cha-cha. Kind of the way I can see Thomas covering almost anything by Joni Mitchell... I'll stick with the "trading voices" litmus test and Windpower, unless of course it is wrong, which it very well may be... That all having been said, wouldn't it be a shock if it were "Submarines"? - -Sean Carolan www.ALTROK.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 11:40:20 -0400 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Re: Alloy: (OT!) Re: alloy-digest V6 #149 And oh yes, Andy... i know what you mean! I don't think they'd ever have such a segment on a kid's show in the US (and certainly wouldn't have when I was a kid! :) It was actually a very interesting and memorable way of presenting the subject of fruit bats, and poo is of course one of those realities of animal existence. "Brilliant Creatures" is a great show about animals... it's directed at kids but I think people of all ages would enjoy it. Another segment in the show I saw had one of the hosts visiting a private home where a woman cares for abandoned or ill pet snakes. This host (a teenage boy) apparently had a notorious phobia of snakes so it was an accomplishment for him to visit the house, learn to wash the snake, feed it and care for it. You can hear their radar call going out at regular intervals. Bats are adorable. & for the record Andy, it *wasn't* the pile of poo that reminded me of you.. it was just the mention of Jersey!! Hi all, check out this link: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1438767071 read at the bottom that the guy has a whole stack of laserdiscs for sale including The Golden Age Of Video and The Sony Video Collection. Happy buying NTSC laserdisc player owners! I did a little scratching of head today and realised that I had only asked the smoe server for the subscriber list for Alloy and not Alloy-digest as well so when I took out the duplicate subs we infact have 84 subscribers to the list currently. So far 13 people have registered their guesses which is only about 14% if you take away the couple of people that won't be allowed to enter this. Come on you lurkers... no purchase necessary! Melissa have you heard this yet? Highly recommended for those wishing for a Dolby-day-off. Good luck Crackers, Ian and Jon in the upcoming performances. I found it particularly amusing imagining Crackers performing with his 'organ' in front of a gay audience! Ooh! Suit you sir. It's a powerful image... ;o) Cheers and out. I don't know why I didn't notice it before, but the Forum on my webcomic webpage is very similar in logistics to the old Tap Room on the FES where many of us first met and chatted about all things Thomas Dolby as well as had fun with other great adventures (like "The Emeritus Professor" story). Since conversation on my Forum is practically nil anyways I can't see there being any complaints if a bunch of Thomas Dolby fans swooped in and took it over. Heck... I might even be able to figure out a way to repost "The Emeritus Professor" and we could try to finish the story (although I think for the sake of continuity I'll delete the last two chapters or so which really seemed to be going nowhere and had too many people introducing too many new characters). Father's Day is coming up this week-end, and my kids always ask me what I'd like as a wee pressy. Quite often I don't know what to ask for, but in recent years I've tried to make a point of thinking about this a couple of months in advance so I'll be ready when they ask. Well, as soon as you mentioned Roland's new waxing I was going to rush out and buy it, but having time to consider, I decided to ask for it for Father's Day. If they've thought of something else, like a pack of assorted sand paper or a bottle of paint brush cleaner, I can always buy it myself next week. Completely OT, what I AM looking forward to on Sunday is the only Procul Harum gig in the UK in their current European tour, which by good fortune is here in my home town of Manchester at the magnificent Bridgewater Hall. Not only is this their only UK gig, it's the only one on the tour with full orchestra and choir. I am a really, really big PH fan, so this is like a dream come true for me, it being about 20 or so years since I last saw them live. I saw Gary Brooker playing live on Jules Holland's show at New Year, and unlike Ian Anderson, his voice is as good as ever and he hasn't lost his ability to hit all the old notes. Hearing him sing 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' again after all these years is something to behold. > > Good luck Crackers, Ian and Jon in the upcoming performances. Er, Europa and the Thompson Twins? Too obvious. OK, I'll plump for 'Flying North' since no one else has yet. It's got the funky percussion for Alannah and the humor a la the video for Lies. It seems about the right era as well, I think. Wish me luck - my surgery got rescheduled for Tuesday, June 19th!
