Hi all, soooo. On day 1 of the contest we have the following guesses: Airwaves: Jon Drukman Windpower: Tim One of our Submarines AndyJ Cloudburst at Shingle St. Trevor Urges: Melissa Brian wrote: > Er, if no one other than Thomas knows, then how do _you_ know? Good point! Well, telepathy it isn't. He told me. It's as simple as that and that was why I thought it would make a great competition and stimulate some thought provoking listening to the songs. It would also be great - but naturally not mandatory - to have a reason of why you think your guess fits the bill. Audible similarities have already been mentioned and they are things that I'm sure other members would like to explore too. If there is a tie I will still draw a lottery between the correct answers so lets have some more guesses from the Alloy folk! There are currently about 50 of us on the list so the voting rate is at about 10% - in the UK general election they managed a 60% turnout and for this one you don't even have to leave your comfy seat... Vote you lurkers! We're talking about a signed copy of Hyperactive! for free here afterall! Robin wrote: > > Would that lead to a good Alloy question - which > > track do you most wish carried on for longer? > > Not necessarily your **favourite** track perhaps, > > many are perfect just as they are, if you get what I mean. Oh this is easy for me. I scare myself, no, I love you goodbye, or perhaps screen kiss... Damn! Maybe not quite so easy afterall... Good luck all! Jon P.S. Robin. All VHS format tapes sold in the UK are recorded using the PAL transmission standard. All VHS tapes sold in the US are recorded using the NTSC transmission standard. It's the same tape physically but the information on the tape is not compatible except on multi-standard VCR's. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 07:06:02 -0400 From: Sean Carolan Subject: Re: Alloy: Alloy competition. Darn...I think that's the winner, too. Oh, well...I'll choose Radio Silence then, because there's a female vocal on both recorded versions, and again, much trading of "voices" (ultimately served by Thomas overdubbing himself.) - -Sean ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 08:34:50 -0400 From: "Robin Thurlow" Subject: Re: Alloy: Alloy competition. My guess for the competition will have to be Windpower, too. It has a very different sort of mood to it than the rest of GAOW, which on the whole feels a bit more introspective than this song. Also it's very percussion-oriented, which would coincide with Alannah's strengths (and I'm sure I didn't spell her name right..!) Actually Andy wrote this! :) Thanks for clarifying about the VHS thing, Jon. That had always thrown me. xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 20:50:48 +0800 From: "Andy Venables" Subject: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V6 #149 Hi all, I haven't seen anyone vote for One of Our Submarines yet so I'll plump for that one. - -- Robin, I'll second what Jon C says - PAL is a colo(u)r system like NTSC (Never Twice the Same Color) whereas VHS is the physical format of the videocassette itself. A modern UK telly will indeed playback a USA tape, so I'm told. Send us and example of what you've been warned and we'll try and figure out what they mean! "Whose Poo Is It?" - LMFAO! We didn't get TV like that when I was a nipper. Mind you it was Black-n-White in those days, ha ha. I like the fruit bats, they're just mice with wings after all :o) I stood outside at 9:45pm at home the other day, dusk, and a pair of small bats went whizzing silently past (silent to me anyway - I'd NEVER be happy with my hifi if I could hear up to 90kHz LOL) a few times. Nearly hit me at one point. Wonderful creatures, they are. Glad that a pile of poo made you think of me ;o) Thanks to Thomas : re: Urban Tribal Russell : for the clever piccy Robin : Bruce info Cheers, +AndyJ+ - -- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 13:32:00 +0000 From: "Tim Hudson" Subject: Alloy: A curry with David Bowie ? - or a kebab with Liz Taylor........ Hi from Benelux few bits and bobs: 1) Harlesden ALRIGHT YEAH ! 2) White city on The Flat Earth album - Of course - I was stressed out at the time of the posting...... 3) Drug cathedral shape of an Octahedron in the White City : I like to think this is the BBC Television centre Building opposite White City Tube station but of course the BBC dont do drugs do they..... ...I mean Frank Bough and that chap who presented the childrens television program blue Peter who got busted for Coke excepted .... Seriously though - Milton Keynes ? Robyn Hitchcock sings about going down to Milton Keynes in his irreverant sneering but comically ridiculous song 'Black Snake Diamond Rock'. This is also possibly the only song including a lyric about a penthouse full of dwarves........ 4) My mum's now enetering her 8th week in Hamersmith Hospital - just up the road from White City Tube station { no 74 bus}. She survived the lengthy surgery [over 4 hours in the end] and is now out of intensive care - but shes still spaced out on painkillers in a post op ward. I spoke with her on the telephone for about 4 minutes the other day. Had a good old sob afterwards and felt the weight lifting off my shoulders. Many thanks to all of you for your thoughts and best wishes. My mums a daft old bat really - but I love her lots and shes spent 40 years in the NHS nursing other people so she deserved some good luck. Re: the excellent Thompson Twins competition: I'm going to go for Europa ! I was going to say 'my Brian is like a sieve' but you know that already. Johnny Marr - by the way is French for "I'm bored" or I'm really Bored! I didn't know this until I left the UK ..... My question for Thomas .......would be what on earth did you do after you came off stage at Live aid having played 'Heroes' with David Bowie? It must have been so hard to come down after playing at Wembley Stadium with David Bowie to an audience around the world for such a good cause. I'd like to imagine you and he went out for a curry together somewhere round the corner ! But I expect you were being chased by Midge Ure to sign his autograph book ! HaH! - Just joking Robin ! OK then - You found a Kosher Kebab shop with Liz Taylor........ I can se Mr Dolby remebers on his web site now...... " I wiped the grease off liz's skirt with the end of Brian Ferrys white scarf and we carried her out the kebabshop and down the road in the direction of Willesden Junction - but the funny thing was she never dropped that magnum of champagne " ......Later that night Seligman told me he'd autographed her ankle in marker pen whilst she was crashed out on the floor..... What can anyone possibly do after Wembley with Bowie at Live aid.......I wonder. My guess is that it couldn't have been easy with all that energy going on. Was it realy one warm summers night 16 years ago - amazing how time flies. Tim. Thomas writing for the Thompson Twins eh? I am stuck on two possibilities.... but I am going to say "Don't turn away", mostly because Europa's voice on her tribute version sorta reminds me of the Thompson Twins one vocalist (I wasn't a HUGE fan so I do not know their names) Cheers all Ian p.s. I am 9 days away from my plays opening and my nerves are shot... ACK! Can anyone give me suggestions about how they relax before these types of things?? Yesterday I had an hour long bath and that almost helped but it left me with a sore back (very small tub). _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 14:24:58 -0400 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: Fear (was: Dolby/Thompson Twins Contest) Ian Gifford wrote: > Can anyone give me suggestions about how they relax before these types of > things?? The only thing I know for certain that will quell my nerves before doing something scary, is to come up with something else to do beforehand that I find even more scary. Then the original scary thing will seem like a piece of cake. Don't really endanger yourself of course.. but as an example, I was really nervous about learning how to drive this summer, and this is one reason why I wanted to go on a trip beforehand which required flying in a plane. Now, driving myself around in a car doesn't seem like a half bad idea :) I don't know if this technique would work for everyone. If you're the easily shell-shocked type it might be a negative thing to get all jangled up before your event. Maybe you could try lifting weights or doing lots of exercise to burn off the nervous energy if you don't like the scary/more scary idea. xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 11:47:56 -0700 From: Jon Drukman Subject: Alloy: nerves of steel At 09:52 AM 6/12/2001 -0400, Ian Gifford wrote: >p.s.
