It didn't help the staggering though - but considering I had 30 pounds of hand luggage and was wearing my really heavy 13-hole Docs, I doubt any pill could have made me more graceful. (I think 'steal' would imply the institution of the church wanting to take them away for itself! :) The 'incorrect grammar' never dawned on me as a problem, since this is poetry and imagery he's working with. Also each time a song is performed the singer might work it a bit differently lyrically and so on, and I figure Thomas might have subtly changed the lyrics on the fly as he was performing it in the studio, leaving a certain word or sound out as suited his mood... kind of like a good jazz sax player will when he jams. I love lyrical translations (obviously!! :) but because music performance can be such an elastic thing when done well, I figure the meaning of the song will reveal itself over time the more I hear it, even if I'm stuck on a particular word. One day, if I'm lucky, I'll have that big epiphany. Sorry to hear of the necessity of an MRI Mary (yes, very loud, and claustrophobic to be inside of!) and I hope you're well. But isn't it just fantastic that we are able to do this nowadays? an absolutely non-invasive way to look at everything within the body in cross-section. When I had one a couple of years back to look out for migraine related problems just to be certain there was nothing organic going on (and I'm all clear, in fact they wrote in my folder that my brain was unremarkable..! LOL... what a blow to the pride. But at least I know there's one in there) I asked if I could keep a picture of my brain to put on the internet but they wouldn't let me have one. xxxx Robin T who should be in bed and is instead sitting up writing email... but it's so nice to be back in my little corner, with all of my pictures and books! :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 11:52:26 +0300 From: jonathan.chiddick@nokia.com Subject: Alloy: Urban Tribal: Straight from the horses mouth - so-to-speak Hi all, I had a crusade and it is now complete! Direct from the keyboard Thomas himself... It was infact 'hand on bible, distil the urban tribal' ... and the place was Harlseden in London, where there is a power plant. So there you go! For those that were correct, go to the top of the class and give out the pencils. For those who were wrong... no cigar this time but read on! The lyric follows: >-----Original Message----- >From: ext Thomas Dolby Robertson >Subject: Urban Tribal corrections! > > >Urban Tribal > >VERSE >She talked to boys from the far side of town >and in a while one chose her >they paint her face bringing gifts for her father >and shower her with roses > >CHORUS >In the early days >they used to laugh a lot >now they don't even smile very often >and their eyes seldom meet >if they can help it >Urban tribal >the girl don't have an answer to your call >Urban tribal >she won't feed your babies anymore >she was the last in a line >ready to be taken by motherhood >hand on bible, distil the urban tribal >from her blood > >VERSE >She'll tell it all at the confession tonight >one prayer for hope >one for pardon >the early moon >and the glow from the power plant >will light her way back to Harlesden So thank you very much Thomas for intervening and sorting that out for us. How lucky we are to have Thomas reading in the background. On the back of the Puppet Theatre discussion that is ongoing at the moment I had an idea. When I was reading the archives I came across particularly interesting question which was posed by Phil Louie on 15. February 1997 where he speculated: "The Thompson Twins/Babble - "Puppet Theatre". I've always thought that song sounded like a Thompson Twins song. Then again, TMDR was a keyboardist for them on the "In The Name of Love" album when they were a 7 piece band... Oh, this is also my favorite TMDR rarity that I've heard..." Well, I happen to know that Puppet Theatre was not infact written with The Thompson Twins in mind but another very notable song from Thomas' collection was. During the writing process, however, this particular piece became so much a Thomas-song that he could not give it up. I think it's fair to assume that no one should actually know about this apart from Thomas himself so let's have a little competition; what would your guess be? The question to Alloy members is: Which song did Thomas originally intend the Thompson Twins to perform? Post your best educated guess to Alloy in the next 7 days be in the running to win a fabulous prize! The provider of the correct answer will receive (fanfare of trumpets to be inserted here) a brand new and unplayed copy of the Hyperactive! compilation album which Thomas has personally signed for the lucky winner. (the song in question may or may not be present on this compilation so please don't assume anything by the choice of prize) In the event of a tie I'll get my wife to draw the name from a hat and we'll decide it that way. Which song do you think that Thomas wrote with the Thompson Twins in mind then? Best of luck all! I was surprised to find both formats being sold there. Or were both always available, and I simply never knew? And Jon, thanks for forwarding the 'Urban Tribal' information (and thank you Thomas for clarifying! :) as well as arranging the 'Which song was written with Thompson Twins in mind, but Thomas kept for himself' Contest!!! I will have to think carefully about this. Should we post our answers to you privately, or post them to Alloy? xxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 12:50:47 -0400 From: "Ian Gifford" Subject: Alloy: Crackers and Ian together by way of mp3 (OT) Hi all, as promised I have posted a version of "Downtown Demons resume" to http://ca.briefcase.yahoo.com/folkie4 Crackers played accordian and sent it to me in an email. I put the guitar, bass (by Richard Negus) and "Bad Guy" (pron. gee) aka Jeff Werkmeister over that. Thanks Crackers for your help. I hope every one will find the time to give it a listen and send Crackers and I your thoughts. By the way... this song is a gritty one.... It is sung by a pretty nasty fellow and will not be included on any Disney Soundtracks any time too soon. If you have heart troubles... avoid this song Ian _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 18:33:04 -0400 From: "Mary A. Is this still happening? How has the response been? Also as a item of interest that many recent members have not seen, I recently posted the spinning thomas name graphic on my web site. It is a graphic that spells dolby and when upside down spells thomas. I remember when thomas told us about how someone came up to him in a with it written on a cocktail napkin.
