What's that got to do with Safety at work.....still it was memorable as they say....... Re nuclear advice - Two years ago here in Luxembourg I received some papers through my letter box concerning what to do in the advent of a nuclear attack which included - and I thought this was hilarious - the advice to 'cover your vegetable herb garden with corrugated iron sheeting' - - I like this especially because a) it just automatically assumed everybody had a 'vegetable herb garden' and b) It completely contradicted the other advise of staying indoors and sealing all windows and door frames with damp towells to stop the ingres of radioactive nuclides....... I think it also said something about when the army come to rescue you and you leave your building - you are required to walk and not run..... Presumably, remembering of course to say goodbye to your radioactive vegetable herb garden en route...... OK on to my quest of establishing a list of place names mentioned in TMDRS work... Re: Thomas Dolby and the geography of his music - here is what I got from the album Astronauts...... Not sure that its been a fruitfull exercise really [ Actaully its been an extremely pointless exercise] but nevertheless here as promised are the results....... A geography of Astronauts and Heretics... feat place and location names...and DR Martins boots as an exception for Robin - who has some.... New Orleans I love you good bye Everglades Gulf of Mexico Cajun Moon cruel rein Silk Pyjamas dr martens... DMs for robin...! London (underground system) The Bakerloo line I live in a suitcase Rome Los Angeles inside TMDR ! The Falls in a barrel ... The North Pole In a suitcase... Eastern Bloc England (its so green) The Berlin Wall Europa... Down the beaches...(hand in hand) Beaches in Suffolk England? Walberswick and locale... possibly ...after an email comment from TMDR? Close but no cigar The airport.....? Wide Brazillian skies... Thats why people fall in love The moon... Neon Sisters The M1 (Principle North / South Motorway in England) London Holywood Skid Row A cooling planet.... The beauty of a dream as a frog on a leaf..... Other places include the credits: Album Made in USA Management Cracks 90 Ltd in London Mary Coller Managemnet in Los Angeles USA For more info: the FES Post Office Box 66 Hastings East Sussex TN34 1NZ England. and thats about it for astronauts ......it doesn't say where in USA it was recorded or mixed so I cant do the cities. Will I ever do such a silly thing again ? Probably..... Oh dear ......still at least Hastings gets a mention..... Dr. Magnus Pike would probably have approved. [I bet there are people in the States who thought he was just an actor playing up aas the mad scientist and not for real]. Its interesting to muse upon how much of Thomas's Scientist image was derived from Magnus's ejaculatory shouts of "Science"!! The association was there - but as we all know Thomas's Career didn't really need the gimicks to be self sustaining - for me the music spoke for itself. Still does. To close I'll be sending the compilation CD which features the 12 inch mix of Hyperactive to Robin soon and she can raffle it off some how to some worthy home - where Duran Duran and Killing Joke and Midg Ure are appreciated - [ her place then probably ]! :-) Bye Tim. - -- Tim Hudson tim_hudson@zdnetonebox.com - email ___________________________________________________________________ To get your own FREE ZDNet Onebox - FREE voicemail, email, and fax, all in one place - sign up today at http://www.zdnetonebox.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 08:28:28 -0500 From: Damien Sweeney Subject: Alloy: RE: alloy-digest V6 #116 Robin, Just a quick question. At the time of SBMWS's release, I remember hearing on the radio (by a misinformed local DJ) that the guy shouting "Science" had once been Thomas' own teacher from school, and Thomas got him to appear on the record. Later I learned Dr Pike had really been a scientist on UK tv... yet still I was confused & not sure if Thomas having his former teacher on his record had made him famous, and then he got his own tv show..! Tim, I love your list of places on the A&H record. Place lists and other trivia are great fun and I think the folks at the FES were talking of making a feature of such things... your efforts are much appreciated :) xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 May 2001 09:50:58 -0400 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Re: Alloy: RE: alloy-digest V6 #116 The prizes will be sent out very soon, I'll keep everyone updated on this! We know it mentions a few English locales (pointed out by Tim's most recent post) but I always wondered where it took place. Ultimately, after rounding through various Iberian and Latin American locales (how's the poor girl going to manage / doesn't speak a word of Spanish), it hit me that it could be Los Angeles (where she could easily "wander off into the smog" and where knowledge of Spanish might be an asset) but that it was rendered slightly anachronistic after it was written by the opening of L.A.'s subway, which was certainly running by the time the record was released. The entire scenario smacks of a Brit set into this sprawling mass of freeway congestion and impersonal auto life. I often miss living in Miami Beach, where my apartment was two blocks from the beach and two blocks from the office. I could walk or ride my bike everywhere and leave the car parked for days at a time. Here in LA.. it's nearly criminal to be caught walking! Ahh well.. I'm here for the work.. someday will come when I can retire to the Caribbean! Ciao for now.. I bet a lot of our friends on the other side of the Atlantic are wondering a) what is a Pelican crossing? and b) what was Dad's Army? though some of them might know the latter as it's possible it could have been exported to the States. Perhaps we shouldn't tell them yet, but have a little competition to see if anyone can guess, with an extra prize for the most imaginative or bizarre answer. I used to love those old public information films, but they only ever showed them at ridiculous times, like after midnight just before BBC TV closed down for the night (remember the days when TV wasn't broadcast 24 hours every day????) There was something terribly British about them, and I think Harry Enfield did a great job of skitting them with his Grayson and Mr Cholmondley-Warner characters (pronounced Chumley-Warner; typically British). Beuatifully recreated in glorious monoichrome, complete with scratches, jumps and the presenters looking at the wrong camera. By coincidence the BBC broadcast a program made up of these sketches (called 'Look, Listen and Take Heed') only a couple of days a go. I taped it but haven't had time to watch it yet.
