I was also thinking of the communism vs. democracy struggle that took place not just between the US and USSR but also in several smaller European countries, Germany among them. I think the "threat of Soviet domination" was probably pretty real to those living in close proximity to them. I do think we've been sheltered from those realities, and also at least had the "advantage" of having superpower status. At least we had muscles to flex, whether you agree with that or not... imagine living in the middle, in a first strike zone or not... just waiting to see which one of the big guys is gonna blink first. Talk about powerless. At least this is what I read and was taught in college... of course, one should always cast a skeptical eye on these things. I guess when I listen to Thomas' music, with its numerous Cold War references, I hear this, not just fear of nuclear obliteration. Having only lived in the States, though, and having grown up with the same fears and paranoias that Robin and Crackers write of, I would really like to hear a different perspective--say from someone who grew up in this same time period in Europe. This has the added advantage of being pretty on topic. Jon, sorry to hear of your flight troubles. At least you had the courage to speak up.... I would think "what the hell is that farking noise" would get someone's attention. Damien & I just had a trip get totally snafu'd, but at least it wasn't mechanical--although the way the airline handled the whole thing did not inspire confidence in their crisis management skills, in the least. Well im happy anyway . By the way any of you got Gothic LP on vinyl - if so please check the sleeve and see if one of the pictures is that of one of the actresses having eyes in her ahem!! chest region , my copy does but I believe it was banned and released with a different picture , but ive never seen another copy to check - thanks ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 May 2001 20:34:07 -0400 From: Russell Milliner Subject: Re: Alloy: Public Information janet latham wrote: > > By the way any of you got Gothic LP on vinyl - if so please check the sleeve > and see if one of the pictures is that of one of the actresses having eyes in > her ahem!! chest region , my copy does but I believe it was banned and > released with a different picture , but ive never seen another copy to check - > thanks My copy on vinyl, CD, Laserdisc, VHS, and DVD do not have the eyes in the chest region picture. Would it be possible for you to scan this cover? - -Russell ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 20:48:53 -0400 From: "Robin" Subject: Re: Alloy: Public Information Paul/Janet :) There's a similar excellent video here in the States called "Atomic Cafe", which is a collection of all of the funny and utterly (perhaps deliberately) naive propaganda that was being fed to the American public about how to stay safe in a nuclear blast, how to live in a bomb shelter etc, through the middle of the 20th century on up. Some of the items are really scary, especially toward the end, when military leaders are still enthusiastically talking about using nuclear weapons as a common instrument of warfare, even after knowing of its long-term aftereffects on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If you can get your hands on a copy I highly recommend it. Very educational! xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 21:17:13 -0400 From: "Robin" Subject: Alloy: calendars... I do intend to keep the calendar project going, with everyone's birthdays and upcoming special events. The problem I've had last month and this month as well, is that I've used up my three free calendars and now have to subscribe to the service... which would be perfect since I love these easily-updated calendars of theirs... except that we had to invest every last cent into reserving our room in Edinburgh and getting things for the shop together & I am now completely broke. I have to suspend the calendar for now but I promise it'll be back with a vengeance, from the month of July onward! There will be lots more photos of Thomas, and also, remember I'm always accepting entries for calendar art from anyone who would like to contribute. Meanwhile I'll try to keep everyone up to date on information in the Thomas Watch when the events roll around, and post members' birthdays. I'd like to wish very happy belated birthdays to three of our esteemed members: Damien Sweeney (April 7th), my husband Dave (April 19th) and Jon Chiddick (April 29th) Happy belated birthday to all of you, sorry I missed putting them up at the right time but I'll make it up to you I promise! I hope you had wonderful celebrations... xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #116 ***************************
