I don't think I've pointed this out already (if I have then please excuse the repetition!) but if you visit http://www.spiderman.sonypictures.com you'll see an excellent use of Beatnik that really compliments the effects perfectly. The cursor gets caught in the web and if you struggle, the spider will come out and devour it! It takes a while to do the download but it's well worth the wait... xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 02:21:30 -0400 From: "Ian Gifford" Subject: Alloy: Re: local art walks Robin Wrote: back to Dolby topics ... and speaking of which... I wonder, is there a lot of variance in the way musicians' recording studios are set up, or is there some necessary standard layout of equipment? depending on circuitry etc? Are there ever local studio tours where musicians work or do most people record in large studios & not home ones? *** first... you need a mic.... preferably one that can capture a whole whack of different timbres without too much alteration (essentialy it has to have a decent frequency response and good SPL (sound pressure level) response. Next you need a good input device ( a mixing board with good pre-amps or just good preamps alone). Then you need media... whether it is software based or tape based it has to be able to pick up the sound without manipulating it un-invitedly. I am currently using a four track FOstex tape machine with a Digitech Tube pre-amp and tube dynamics processor. No special effects excepting what is in my computer which I also use mostly for mixing, editing and bouncing. The microphone I am using is an Audio Technica large diaphragm condenser mic. Now for anyone who thinks that what i just wrote is jargon to them... I have a good input device... a slow computer that does OKAY and a GREAT microphone... in other words... I can find the tones I am looking for with some patience and planning. For the rest of you... If you want... I would LOVE to know what pieces of gear that you have in your collection. In response to Crackers' contest idea... the best "under $10" purchase I have found is a 3 piece Japanese drum kit that I bought at a Goodwill for $5... very cool... in silver sparkle and all ;) Peace to all Ian http://www.geocities.com/core_songs.html http://www.iangifford.f2s.com _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 09:45:42 +0300 From: jonathan.chiddick@nokia.com Subject: Alloy: Blasted from the past! Good morning all, > Good grief Jon, truly is a blast from the past! Excellent idea! > > I went back and had a read of the original '96 thread. > Slarv's answers had me cackling bigtime! Yep. I started reading the archives and it has become a bit of a labour of love at times. I won't mention which bits but sheesh it's been heavy going occasionally but in balance what a lot of laughs! What a crazy and amusing bunch of like-minded souls. Excellent. I was reading the WAY versions of Thomas's songs yesterday evening and to quote the master, 'I (nearly) soiled myself'. Remember that anyone? I laughed my ass off. I did venture into the Tap Room at times but by the time I really got into it it had already reached critical mass and was to all intents and purposes defunct. Much time passed and then I found Alloy. Now by quirk of fate I'm catching up on the previous four years and it is very very amusing! Incidentally. When I sent 'who' to majordomo it told me that Alloy currently has about 50 members - give or take - and so far only 8 have 'exposed themselves' to the rest of us. Those people are also mainly the regular contributors so... "HELLO!..." "Who are you and vot are you do-ink here. Ve ave vays of making you tork!" De-lurk now and tell us (more) about your... mother! I for one have learnt a lot about certain Alloy members over the last few days of reading the archives but in the subscriber list there is a veritable cornucopia of exotic mail addresses that beg questions from them. You must have questions too. I have been wondering, pondering really, just who really wrote May The Cube Be With You. This is credited to four different sources on different releases and I blinking-well want to know! If I listen to this song it reeks of George Clinton but if I read the lyrics there is definitely some Thomas in there but not all. How much? Who did what and what were they smoking at the time? The public really needs to know! Come on lurkers. Expose yourself now! Feel the cool air circulate around your previously hidden persona. Come on in the water is lovely! Cheers all and de-lurk now! I joined alloy about a week ago - and have been reading various email and have come to 2 decisions - 1) some of you are nutters (in a nice way of course), and 2) why has it taken me so long to join with people who worship Mr Dolby. About me - I am 32 yrs old - married with no kids - born Blackpool , England and lived in the same area all my life - currently 10 miles up the road in a small port called - Fleetwood -. Blackpool has a famous landmark - of Blackpool Tower which was based on the Eiffel tower I belive - but a smaller version - and is on top of a building which for years held a large circus. I first got into Mr Dolby in about 1981/82 and I believe first item obtained was the 7'' of Windpower. My collection includes all english 7'',12'', LP's ,cassettes and vinyl along with several imports - and then spread to include related artists - include Low Noise, Fallout Club, Girls at Their Best, Jack Heard ( a version of James Brown Sex Machine - with T Dolby & Matthew Seligman providing the music), Thompson Twins , Trevor Herion (of Fallout Club) and currently enlarging my collection of Bruce Woolley material - now upto original lp, rereleased cd , and 7 singles -- one of which was released as Ghost train by B.Woolley & T Dolby. I also have ( but dont tell anybody - various bootleg live recordings - including the master tape from Thomas Dolby live at Strathclyde University (Scotland) in 1982 which includes a live version of Commercial Breakup .My biggest regret is never actually managing to see him perform live. My other major interest in life is Football (or Soccer) and follow Blackpool FC around England ,and also follow my local team of Fleetwood Freeport Fc. Anyway - hope ive not bored you & hope that you will welcome me into your world. Yours Hopefully, Paul latham MY biggest regret is ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 08:49:34 EDT From: Nayome1266@aol.com Subject: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V6 #102 Here's my biography. My name is Kathleen T. Presser, originally known as Kathleen Truelove. I was born and raised in California, mostly in L.A. county. I first heard of Dolby in 1983 from my boyfriend at the time. The first song of his I heard was She Blinded Me With Science. The music was so different to me at the time. I thought it was really 'cool'. Right now I'm still living in L.A county in California. I'm married to my second and best husband who is also a big Dolby fan. I just had my third child and his first child. My second husband and I met in a way because of our mutual liking of Dolby's music. My husband has seen Dolby in concert, I've never had the chance to see Thomas perform live. I'm a QA assistant coordinator at Disney Online. I'm on maternity leave right now, but will be returning to work in about two weeks. Actually if I could ask Dolby a question I would most likely ask him two questions, first I would ask how his family (wife and kids) are doing simply because I'm a family person myself, second I would ask him if he ever will get back to making music again, especially putting music to a clip or flick like Gate to the Mind's Eye. Well gotta get some sleep. Baby just went down for a couple of hours. I need my beauty sleep. Oh, crap. Missed it by a week... Damien & I had a whirlwind visit to NYC last weekend, where his parents are sort of temporarily living (they have about a two-year tenure there). We would have loved this. Oh well. Got to see Joe Jackson though!!!!!!!!! Who was FABULOUS!!!!!! What an amazing show... There's an art tour here in the fall, actually about an hour an a half south... in the cities of Merrimac, Baraboo, Spring Green, Dodgeville and Blue Mound. There are a tremendous number of artists in this area of the state, and they open their studios for a three-day weekend; you get to drive from town to town on these lovely, winding back roads, through rolling hills and giant outcroppings of limestone. Really a wonderful weekend... Also I have to say thank you to Slarv for explaining his name... since I'm not a Tap Room-er, I didn't know and have always been curious as to what the hell that was. Midge Ure in NYC Midge Ure's artist representative from my Fluxus list has contacted me to confirm his appearance in NY next weekend, and wants me to bring a picture of my Midge (a blue Betta) to show the other Midge! Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to make it, because it's the weekend of our shop's opening in Ithaca and I really have to be there. But here's the information on the parties, if anyone here would like to attend. I think all you'd need is a picture of Midge the Fish to get in. I'll scan one in... it would actually be pretty funny if a lot of people came up to Midge at the party and showed him Midge the Fish. He would think it was a conspiracy! :) and it would certainly qualify as performance art. If enough of us can go... I may be able to beg my way down there on Saturday evening. Friday, May 4th: Koch Progressive/Mi5 Recordings party to welcome the artists from the UK Midge Ure and Jesus Jones. Featuring videos and artwork from some up and coming NY artists, and the music of the Fluxus quartet. 8pm Stephan Gang Gallery 529 West 20th Street, 4th Floor Saturday, May 5: A special free show featuring Mi5/Koch artists Midge Ure, Jesus Jones, Blue Mockingbirds and Mercyside. Guest band Johnny Lives will start the night. Come early and have a drink with us and Midge. Doors open at 7, bands start at 8:30.
