Alloy: I like this biography thing . . . Good grief Jon, truly is a blast from the past! Excellent idea! I went back and had a read of the original '96 thread. Slarv's answers had me cackling bigtime! [the fair Robin thus did write] >And I think Paul should write another one because I think he's moved in the >last four years and may have new famous neighbors :) Yes the witness protection program is still being worked through, I've changed addresses, ISPs, and hopefully matured outlooks since then. :-) So, a fresh intro if anyone really wants to read it... Hello, I'm Paul Baily, just some guy, 31 years going on 32, born in Wellington, New Zealand. Grew up in various towns there, Dunedin, Auckland, but most of the time Wanganui, a small farming region town about 3hrs drive north west of Wgtn. Dragged kicking and screaming over to Adelaide, South Australia at the tender age of 16 (bye bye long time school friends... :-( ). Eventually ended up liking it here despite my best efforts to do otherwise. Became an Australian citizen a few years later more or less by accident when I started working for a defence contractor and had to become a citizen for the level of security clearance required. Over the following years - I know this sounds corny - I began to really appreciate this country, it's unique culture and people so though I have dual citizenship I call myself an Aussie. Fast fwd to present day, currently still somewhere in Brisbane, now working as an IT Manager (though try keeping me away from doing real IT work!), long time Mac fan, pretty much an RL social hermit otherwise. Pathetic, I know. I have a correction from all those years back, I think my first exposure to Thomas' outstanding work was the SBMWS 12" single with the unmistakeable single lens glasses on the cover. Still has it's original zip-lock cover and price tag from Jack Hodge Radio Ltd. in Wanganui, New Zealand. NZ$5.99. A steal these days. In fact I'm listening to it now... and now I'm listening to it at 45 RPM. Seems a lot more upbeat. ;-) I believe it was the third record I ever bought. Record 1, Primitive Man/Icehouse, record two, Making Movies/Dire Straits (I kid you not). I next got TGAOW and thrashed it to bits. But at least back then I had the sense to tape a 1 cent piece or two on the counterweight of the tonearm doing it's best to be a plough so it's still playable today. That was it though, I was hooked on the Gentleman's works. Closest landmark. Hmm, well, closest recreational landmark would have to be the Gold Coast but I prefer the Sunshine Coast - think Gold Coast with much better scenery and so far unmarred by rampant commercialism [read: sleaze]. Quick geo lesson, Gold Coast is 45 mins south of BNE, Sunshine Coast is an hour north. Beyond that technically would be the great barrier reef, but you know the old story, you never get around to visiting what's in your own back yard... Closest international landmark, that big coat hanger in Sydney. Believe me, the bridge, the harbour, and the opera house really are breathtaking when seen in person! Closest famous neighbour. Hmm. I'd have to say Powderfinger who hail from Brisbane. Never met them, wouldn't ever have a chance to either but they're damn good. Virtually speaking though my closest truly worthwhile famous neighbours remain you though! Question 5: Hmm, well, I'm not sure I'd actually have the nerve to even approach the gentleman to be honest. Believe it or not when I'm not in my 'shiny happy professional' persona meeting clients and associates I'm awfully shy in person, besides I wouldn't want to intrude or impose on his private time. That said, [ :-) ] if such a circumstance did somehow (somehow: great ST:TNG term for explaining some happening completely unbelievable yet essential to the plot) arise, I guess my first question would be something innocuous like 'd'ya want another coffee?', next question would be 'so how did you manage to swing a Brisbane gig on the world Rarities tour? You were excellent BTW!' [ ;-) ], my real question would be 'forgive me for asking this Thomas (may I call you Thomas?) but what's your favourite food?' Yes, that's right, I have no idea what I'd ask him either. :-) stay well, Paul. [not running the race] "there's emptiness behind their eyes, there's dust in all their hearts." I believe this may be going on simultaneously in other cities and towns around the US and I encourage people to go if there's one in your town. Personally I've always been really inspired getting to see other artists' work spaces (and getting to see how much more messy or less messy I am by comparison when I work!) and getting to talk with people whose work you might know but whom you might never have met otherwise... we tend to be a reclusive lot :) The link to the NYC one is http://www.toastartwalk.com/ to give you an idea of what's normally entailed. back to Dolby topics ... and speaking of which... I wonder, is there a lot of variance in the way musicians' recording studios are set up, or is there some necessary standard layout of equipment? depending on circuitry etc? Are there ever local studio tours where musicians work or do most people record in large studios & not home ones? xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 22:49:46 +0100 From: Slarvibarglhee Subject: Re: Alloy: quickie for Slarv As far as I know they're still there, but as I rarely enter the tower at street level, I don't see the floor signs so if they've moved I wouldn't know about it. I'll have a look tomorrow. If they ARE still there, they're somewhere up around the 25th floor, I think.
