Alloy: I like this biography thing . . okay, my turn, here goes,.... Potted bio for Lissu a.k.a. Louise Ulfstedt, British girlie, currently 29 and living in a village called Golfe Juan in France. I've been here for almost two years after moving from Turku, Finland (where I lived for 9 years.) I even used to work for Nokia, just like Jon :-) I joined Alloy quite close to the start, and I too miss having a bevvy and putting my feet up in the Tap room (....sigh!) I work as an IT consultant, (which is just a fancy way of saying that the company I work at can't be bothered to hire me full time,) and whilst dreaming of becoming a full time musician, I make the odd dance music track, and sing in local bars with a rock/pop band called ID90. The nearest landmark to me is probably the Palais de festival in Cannes (5 minutes drive up the coast) where they have the film festival. I don't know of any famous people living near me, but I saw Nick Nolte boogying-on-down last Saturday night at a bar in Nice, in case that counts :-) After being intrigued by TMDR's videos in the 80s, I found my first Dolby album (TGAOW) in a record shop in Vaasa, Finland, when I was 16, after which I was well and truly hooked. And I still am!!! Burning question for Thomas? Ummm....how many berets does he have? That's all folks! Lissu :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 09:14:56 -0600 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Blast from the past! Alloy: I like this biography thing . . I sent this yesterday - but it never came through as far as I can tell.... Questions I forgot to answer on my bio: Oh, this is a hard one. What question would I ask? I once had a similar situation with Howard Jones. I was a big HoJo fan in high school / college and several years later while in Salt Lake City the morning radio show that I was listening to was broadcasting live from Howard Jones' kitchen in his home in England. It was around 5:30 in the morning and they were taking calls from listeners. I got though, but all I could think to ask was how the morning DJ's had come to be good friends with him ( they went to his house almost every year). Turns out that HoJo missed an interview with them the first time they went there back in the 80's and felt so bad he invited them to his house to redo the interview. Guess they just hit it off, plus HoJo was always well received in Salt Lake that they kept going back. In a similar situation with the same station, I had the opportunity to talk briefly with Captain Kangaroo - Bob Keeshon(sp?) So, now - I meet up with TMDR and what do I ask? Not sure. I'd probably apologize for attempting Mulu and ask what he thought of the "Thomas as a Bride" photo I made for the back of the Bride of Aliens CD. If I was comfortable in the situation, I might ask him to remove his hat and try to encourage him to be more confident with his nicely bald head. (:-) Also, famous person living nearest to me hmmm. If you exclude Denver Broncos and Avalanche team members I'm not sure. The bands Apples in Stereo and Dressy Bessy are from here. They both have songs on the Power Puff Girls soundtrack. Does that count? - -Keith ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 18:19:56 -0400 (EDT) From: CRACKERS Subject: Alloy: Next on A&E Biography: Crackers Okee dokee, the biography thing again. I should really keep this written down somewhere. Name: Chris "Crackers" Cracknell Age: 35 D.O.B.:Sept.13th,1965 Occupation: Accordionist (don't laugh) Marital Status: Married (since Feb.14th, 1987) Kids: 2, Boy (Logan) age 8, Girl (Kerala) age 3. Location: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Religion: Bira Bira devotee First heard Thomas Dolby probably around 1982 in electronics class. Caught a bit of his song "She blinded me with science" on the class radio and because of all the AM radio interference I asked my friend "Is that guy singing 'She blinded me with silence'?" He looked at me funny and said "No, the song is 'She blinded me with science'." it's by a guy named Thomas Dolby. Well, when I heard what the song actually was I instantly thought about this one quiet geek-grrrl at school who I had a terrible crush on and who had blinded me with science. I made up my mind then and there to find this Thomas Dolby person's album and buy it. And that began my love affair with Thomas Dolby's music (if not the quiet little geek-grrrl). My hobbies include creating hentai artwork and erotic fiction (hentai in the western context means erotica based on japanese anime/manga/videogame characters. In japanese hentai means "strange" or "perversion") and very soon I'll be creating my own webcomic on keenspace. I also collect classic videogames and systems, particularily the Atari 2600. As well I'm also a compulsive tinkerer who enjoys mucking about with gadgets and electronics particularily music gear. I love finding creative uses for crap most people view as obsolete. I also love looking for odd bits of tech at flea markets, garage sales, and thrift stores. If I were rich I would buy a big house in the country with a barn. The barn I would renovate and turn into my giant studio/mad scientist lab and I would spend the rest of my days happily recording, tinkering, drawing, writing, and playing old videogames. Since I'm not rich I pretty much do all the above in my cramped and crowded basement geekroom from my little row house in a part of town colourfully refered to as "Crack-Ally". My biggest musical influences would be Kurt Weill, Tom Waits, and of course Thomas Dolby. It's a casio PT-80 toy keyboard. What's cool about this are the built in rythmes. They're not too unlike the famous casio VL-1 (made famous by Trio in the song "Da Da Da") with that cheesie analogue drum quality. Although all the synth sounds on it are very weak (monophonic, single oscilator, no filter) the percussion when run through an effects processor is an instant ear-gasm. Well anyways my brag about this cool little toy (and make no bones about it, as cool as it is, it's a toy - built in speaker, mini-keys) turned into a suggestion for a constest. Using only one audio toy that you find for $10 or less you record a song of 5 minutes or less. Now you can multi-track, apply effects, and even circuit-bend the instrument but the only tone source for the entire work has to be your $10 toy. And it has to be a toy, it can't be a piece of pro-gear that you luck out on finding at a garage sale for $10. We're still hashing out all the details of the contest (the prize is only bragging rights) but since there's such a creative lot here I thought I'd mention the contest so that you can go to r.m.m.s. and check it out if you want.
