Alloy: I like this biography thing . . . Hi all, I am at a loose end tonight and somehow started reading the Alloy archives from the very beginning in April 1996. After a couple of hour of thoroughly fascinating reading it dawned on me that the list as we know it was born a whole 4 years after Thomas's last commercial release as a solo artist... Think about it for a minute. At some point a few months after inception Monya initiated a round of introductions and reading them made me realise that I 'know' probably only 15% of the people on the list. I was amazed to see how many of the regulars were there from the very start! (Paul, Lissu, Slarv, Monya, Lee, Beth, Mary, Keith (the sole inhabitant), Dabbit, Melissa, etc. etc. etc. even Lazlo Nibble himself used to contribute!) The format was, using a template from our most honored list member after Thomas himself - Paul Bailey: >I'm Paul Baily, 26 (27 on Sunday :-), fan of TMDR ever >since I stumbled across Golden Age of Wireless all those years ago, I >live in Brisbane Australia (though I grew up in NZ), closest >landmark...hmm... Ayers Rock? ;-) Closest famous neighbor(s), why you >guys of course! I recently had to ask Crackers who he is as I'd read a million posts from him but didn't even know which country he was writing from (from Hell!!) How about we do this again briefly and reanimate ourselves a bit. It would good to know who is out there in active and in lurk-mode. How about adding Robins question to the deal and telling what we would ask Thomas if we had the chance. (Dream sequences also acceptable within acceptable limits!) I'll start. I'm Jon(athan) Chiddick, 34 and an enthusiastic and consistent follower since about 1982 when Windpower blew me away as a teenager. I'm British and live in Helsinki, Finland under the same spell that plagued Lissu for a time... I grew up not that far from THE Shingle Street in Norwich in the UK. My closest landmark (today) is Helsinki Opera House and my closest famous neighbor is the guy that reads the weather on MTV3 on Finnish TV who lives upstairs. I can't even remember his name but when he had his bachelor party last summer the police were called (not by me!) about the noise and the next day he came around to apologise. If I had the chance I would ask Thomas if that was his 60's Daimler in the Radio Silence video and who was the Caroline? And of course, would he lend me a tenner. ;-) Over to you Alloy. Apologies to the people who have done this before but I feel the public needs to know: I've been hanging around Alloy now for about two years and in that time it's never been done (apart from newcomers introducing themselves) so how about it? Who the hell are you all and what hell are you doing here? Cheers! Jon Sheesh. Deja Vy from 1996! From: Paul Baily Date: Mon, 4 Nov 96 22:22:35 +1000 5. You wander into your favourite cafe for a quiet latte (or if in California, a doublecafdecafcapwithhalfskimmilkandatwistoflemon) and you stop dead in your tracks, rub your eyes to make sure: no, it can't be, it IS! There! Sitting in the corner! Thomas Dolby in YOUR coffee shop! He looks a little weary (maybe winding down from the Rarites tour?) but nonetheless approachable, so you introduce yourself. When he says he's heard your name somewhere before, you say you're an Alloy subscriber which of course gains you instant credibility (hey who says I can't do plugs!) so you both sit at a table sipping away.... what do you ask him? What is it! What is it! Hey Jon, cool topic :) Here's mine: Robin Thurlow age 32, American female. Devoted fan of Thomas Dolby since he first swept me off my feet (ie, knocked me to the floor) with his SBMWS video. I grew up in a few different places but mostly New York... the part that has cows, sheep, rotten weather and rolling hills, not the glamorous city part :) Closest landmark is possibly Watkins Glen, which has Farm Sanctuary http://www.farmsanctuary.org/ as well as an internationally known speedway where Tom Cruise used to race. Our closest famous neighbor is Johnny Hart who draws the B.C. comics. And I think Paul should write another one because I think he's moved in the last four years and may have new famous neighbors :) xxxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #101 ***************************
