I remember buying some Rick James albums when I was at school in the outer suburbs of London in the 80's. I wonder what happened to him? I've also got time for Johnny Guitar Watson - great blues and funk guitarist but also no mean keyboard player - he had some pretty outragious and amusing album covers too. To get to the OTDQ I wonder what the alloy list thinks of Thomases collaborations with George Clinton 'Some of my best Jokes are Friends' etc. I've got the CD but cant read the reduced artwork on the cover which is a shame. Reminds me a bit of the hand drawn artwork covers for the albums by GONG! 'Angels Egg' and 'Camenbert Electric' which features the unlikely titled track 'Squezing sponges over policemans heads' (not sure how far GONG got in the world domination stakes but I guess they would be known in America?). I like hand drawn artwork on album covers but you dont see much of it these days on tiny little CD's which is a shame. To close a daft idea........Some time back I heard about an internet radio station that just played The Greatful Dead - it was linked up to some kind of random CD jukebox and left to its own devices (literally). I dont remember hearing how it was financed but isnt internet access Free in the USA? Its certainly not in the UK and here in Lux its not cheap either. Also I dont remember hearing how any copyright issues were resolved. Anyway youre ahead of me already.......... Radio Dolby [it would be wired to everything hed done and after listening for about 3 months at 5am when everyones asleep it would play 'The wreck of the Fairchild']. or perhaps radio Alloy.... Featuring the music of Crackers and Co.? I guess no copyright problems there....:-) ho Hum ! Oh its good to dream sometimes.......... We get tomorrow (Friday) off on a national holiday to celebrate the accession to the throne of the new Grand Duke of Luxembourg - Grand Duke Henri ( en ri !). The national brewery Bofferding is providing Free beer in its cafes to celebrate. Should be a blast. Hope the new Alloy baby arrived safely and that Robins move is going splendidly. Have a good weekend everyone and thanks once again Crackers for making me laugh with the Clinton thang. Cheers ! I've been following the congressional hearings a bit, and find them quite interesting. Between Don Henley's calls for compulsory licensing and Alanis Morrisette's commentary regarding artists' silence for fear of offending their record companies, it makes for intriguing reading. I am glad to see them stepping up to bat and demanding a place for artists at the negotiating table. After all, if the labels manage to cut themselves a sweetheart deal regarding online distribution and digital rights, it'll be the artists' plates that'll wind up empty...again. Just as an example, Louis Prima's widow has sued Disney for royalties from the VHS and DVD releases of Jungle Book. The Mouse House's defense is that since these technologies didn't exist when his contract was signed, they aren't royalty-incurring. I can just see some enterprising greedhead try to pull the same thing with internet distribution rights. I'm glad it's being brought forward as an example now, because with so much new technology being developed in the future it's best to get this situation settled (hopefully) before it spins too much farther out of control. Especially disgraceful on the part of Disney IMO, because artists have literally made them everything they are from day one and they should have more respect. How can the use of new delivery methods of the same content possibly alter the rights of the person who created the content? If not for Louis Prima and others like him there would be nothing to deliver. Their lawyers are really digging low for this one & it's disgusting! xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 18:55:15 -0400 From: "Robin" Subject: Alloy: OT or not OT?... interview w/Zappa I thought a lot of the people here would like to read this interview with Frank Zappa from 1991 http://www.phillaw.com/html/frankzappa.html The topics range around quite a bit within the framework of the concept of censorship etc. within the music business at the time. I always like to hear what individuals think of things & it's an interesting viewpiont he offers. xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 22:53:00 -0400 From: "Robin" Subject: Alloy: TMDR interview on CNET - friday AM Thomas has just asked me to relay the news that he's doing a last-minute radio interview on C|Net radio tomorrow morning (Friday April 6th) at 7-30am PST. It broadcasts on AM910 in the Bay Area, and he believes it may be syndicated elsewhere. I'm planning to check for it on http://www.cnet.com just in case they feature it there, you never know! xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #86 **************************
