I heard the track whilst driving along in the car and ...... I must have been thinking about Mr Dolby and ...... Then I heard the track and the submarine sounds..... anyway .....Ive bought the U2 CD and upon hearing it again.... Ive changed my mind! Its not like Thomas's 'Submarines' although it is produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. What can I say ? Next time I will be more carefull before I make quick judgements. By the way, Brian Eno is / was I believe an influence on Thomas Dolby but that hardley makes my earlier comparisons valid. Its funny how the context in which you hear things can influence 'what' and 'how' you hear things. The answer to the 'Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief' lyric is the track 'Fiction' on Joni Mitchels Album 'Dog Eat Dog' which Thomas co produced. He also plays on various tracks and has the odd line or two to speak / sing - but not much. The link below to Amazon.com has some reviews including one which mentions Thomas Dolby. The tracks are: 1. Good Friends 2. Fiction 3. Three Great Stimulants, The 4. Tax Free 5. Smokin' (Empty, Try Another) 6. Dog Eat Dog 7. Shiny Toys 8. Ethiopia 9. Impossible Dreamer 10. Lucky Girl There are samples of the first five tracks you can hear below. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000000OXY/qid=984750071/sr=1-9/ref=sc_m_10/105-1132605-6496704 I get the impression that the album had mixed reviews because it was new territory for Joni Mitchel - synthesizers and drum machines. One person described the Track 'Ethiopia' as 'torture' ! Ive had the album a long time and still get it out every few years for a play. Some of its great and some of it sounds like its being pulled in different directions by different people (the record label perhaps)? In balance Its not quite 'The hissing of summer lawns' but for people who have got 7 dollars to spare and fancy broadening their horizons and hearing some other areas of work by Thomas Dolby I would recommend it. I'd be keen to hear what other people think of this album - just out of curiosity. Dont know what Thomas thinks about it but I quite like it. Have a great weekend everyone. Appologies for exagerating the U2 thing - my mistake. Tim. Its quite warm and sunny here today. - - Tim Hudson tim_hudson@zdnetonebox.com - email ___________________________________________________________________ To get your own FREE ZDNet Onebox - FREE voicemail, email, and fax, all in one place - sign up today at http://www.zdnetonebox.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 16:45:50 -0500 From: Russell Milliner Subject: Alloy: SBMWS on the news On the local 24 hour news today, they showed a clip from the space shuttle, but what really cought my attention was that they woke the astronauts up to a clip of SBMWS.
