What he said was "Ich Bin Ein Berliner". A Berliner is a type of donut that looks like a mini car tyre with a hole in he middle and no jam.[thats a rum deal if ever i heard one - anyway] You can buy Berliners here in Luxembourg city in fact i saw some on friday. So in trying to say he felt like a native of Berlin it was interpreted as "I am a donut". [literraly I am a small minature german donut without any jam] - double bum deal. - small - no jam - I am sure I have seen the speech on TV. So I dont think it is an urban legend. I think it really did happen. I cant wait until old George DUBBJAH goes to Berlin........ Heaven knows what wisdoms will pour fourth? like thatchers "we are a grandmother" Re Paulos stuff from Brazil.....I found that very interesting. You mentioned a CD that was released in Brazil with get out of my mix and the search for truth etc....is this the 12 x 12 Original remixes album or something else? What record label was it on? Re the beauty of a dream ......the version on the CD single is for me better than the final version that made it onto the Astronauts album. Its much sparser and more powerfull for it. plastic tuna or whatever it was............made me think of plastic tunes which made me think of the album 'Drastic Plastic' by 'Be Bop Delux'... anyone remember them? I did try to think of something more exciting but ended up there instead...... re thatcher on the tank - didnt know that one - thats a good one. Nobody answered the Dolby 'doctor lawyer indian chif' lyric so I'll give you half the answer its a track on the dog eat dog joni mitchel album.......which has thomas's touch all over.....including those Fairligh series iix samples... on which I'll leave with this.....has anyone heard the U2 track on their new album ( I think) which features the same sonar/underwater submarine type sound samples that thomas used on one of our submarines....? When I heard it the other day I though thomas was playing with U2! Well I didnt actually but I couldnt help thinking thomas will be a bit miffed to hear shades of 'one of our submarines' in the background to a U2 track. Which leads us back to the copyright question again....was it one of thomas' samples or was it a library sample? finally .......Ive just spent a pleasant weekend watching Audrey Hepburn films (5 of them!). What an extraordinary actress and flirt. Is she still alive ? How come I've only just discovered her .......... Is it ok to be in love with a dead film star? It would have been wonderful had thomas been able to do a big screen filmscore with song and dance numbers with fred astaire and the unbelievably belle et jolie Audrey Hepburn........ films to check by her..... Roman Holiday Sabrina Fair Funny Face Breakfast at Tiffanys Paris when it Sizzles someone please tell me shes still around ........... I don't even know how many we have, but it's safe to say whenever the Barbie box gets opened, they will be found unclothed. (which is why the headless/armless ones are kind of disturbing). Maybe it's because their little clothes are easier to take off than put on, for little hands. We only have one Ken, but since this past Christmas, my 5-year old son has two authentic Gulf War soldier dolls, in camo and fully equipped with weaponry and gear. Imagine the testosterone-fest!!! Now the GI's can visit with Barbie (and suddenly lines from Full Metal Jacket pop into my head)... I believe JFK is supposed to have said "Ich bin ein Berliner" which does translate to "I am a jelly donut" (of the special variety found in Berlin, I guess; like frankfurters come from Frankfurt). The correct phrase would have had no article before the noun --"Ich bin Berliner". This was the example used in my German class way back when, to teach the correct way to say, "I am from ." Yes, this list is far more like a cocktail party than a club meeting or a focus group. Feel free to hit the delete key now... Anyway, I actually followed and read Brian's very interesting link on this topic. The author of that piece researched this legend with a German historian. There are two main relevant facts here: 1) Kennedy did indeed say "Ich bin ein Berliner", but 2) it would be very unlikely for his audience to interpret this as "I am a jelly doughnut", though that is technically one possible interpretation. That phrase can also mean essentially "I am one with the people of Berlin", which is how his audience would have understood it. It wouldn't be good for him to say "Ich bin Berliner," which would mean specifically "I am from Berlin", which he obviously wasn't. He indeed knew no German and got the phrase from a German journalist, who also coached him extensively in how to say it. The analogy that the author of the online article used was that you could say to an American, "My boss is a New Yorker," and they would probably NOT think that you had your boss confused with an issue of New Yorker magazine, even though that is technically one way to understand that statement. Thanks for the reference, Brian (and sorry I can't repeat it, I don't have it with me here) - -Beth Julie Sweeney wrote: > I believe JFK is supposed to have said "Ich bin ein Berliner" which does > translate to "I am a jelly donut" (of the special variety found in Berlin, I > guess; like frankfurters come from Frankfurt). No, it is not 12 x 12. The CD is called ESSENTIAL THOMAS DOLBY and it is more or less like the HYPERACTIVE compilation or the PREMIUM GOLD COLLECTION: almost the same songs with a different running order. The label is EMI. I did not find it in US/UK catalogues and I think it is strange that it was only released in Brazil because Thomas songs don't play on the radio anymore and neither Thomas nor EMI Brazil would promote/suport the release. Anyway, it is good to see it in the stores. The last of his songs to play on the radio was THE BEAUTY OF A DREAM. I realy don't know how it made it into a light FM radio station, because ASTRONAUTS wasn't released here. It was the only radio station to play it. The single version is great, but I think I prefer the album version. Around the same time (1992/93) I was home and the radio was on, but I wasn't paying attention to the music. Until all of a sudden the D.J. announced SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE. That was a hell of a surprise, because in 2 seconds I was astonished listening to a LIVE version of SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE. The sound quality was excelent, and the version was like the one on LIVE WIRELESS. Did Thomas released this LIVE VERSION officially ??? What single has She blinded Me With Science LIVE ??? Does anyone know this ??? The track listing of ESSENTIAL THOMAS DOLBY is: 1 HYPERACTIVE 2 RADIO SILENCE 3 SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE 4 AIRWAVES 5 WEIGHLESS 6 WINDPOWER 7 THE FLAT EARTH 8 SCREEN KISS 9 MULU THE RAIN FOREST 10 WHITE CITY (the cd reads WRITE CITY) 11 GET OUT OF MY MIX (single 5:24) 12 ONE OF OUR SUBMARINES 13 THE SEARCH FOR TRUTH PART 1 14 THE SEARCH FOR TRUTH PART 2 Tim: I will e-mail you privatly a scan of the front cover of this cd. I don't do it through Alloy because Robin advised us not to attach things because the e-mail will be filtered.
