Sorry.....everyone........ I'm with Slarvs 4Cs too. Well said. [ shame personally tho' I can never keep mine concise].. To Paulo? in Brazil......what is your favourite Thomas Dolby track and where did you first hear his music.... There is a line in one of his songs about remembering the 'wide Brazilian skies which swallowed you' - its called 'Close but no cigar' I have three versions of this song two on a CD single - one of which is almost an acapella (voices only mix) featuring I think Eddie Van Halen on guitar - - I remember hearing that they were neighbours once and that they would pop round and visit each other studios etc.... Not sure if this is or was really true and I cant remember where I read it now anyway.... I have visions of kilometers of multicore streched out across the back lawn and SMPTE synchronisation locking huge great vast Real to Real tape machines in snyc between their studios.....I do sometimes wish Thomas would enlighten us with some of his technical things like what his favourite vocal compressor is or what techniques he uses to arrange things, how he builds a track - whether he applies reverb when recording or whether he adds it only when mixing - does he compress the kick drum etc etc .. His music is beautifully recorded and mastered and his skills as an arranger and producer always amaze me. But this is not discredit or ignore the enormous contributions that must have been made by Cliff and other collabourators Tim Friesse Green, Quincy etc When you hear how an author approches writing a novel or a painter approaches painting a picture its always fascinating technically and inspiring too. But at the same time it can change the way you percieve a work and so I suppose it is a double edged sword......Thomas' top ten tips for Audio production would be good though.....even if tongue in cheek....No 1 never send your demos to EMI perhaps?....... Anyway, welcome to the list Paulo - hope I got the spelling right. Quizz time for Dolby Fanatics now.....What song features Thomas singing the words 'Doctor Lawyer Indian Chief'? Raising a smile - I hope .....and bringing back some memories ..... Of what different worlds do you speak? I don't think there is a soul here who has ANY disagreement on copyright issues. I might point out that even Damien, who ragged Jon mercilessly, had such respect for Thomas's wishes, that when he downloaded Fever Pitch at work (dedicated T-1 access), he took great care to be sure it went on a firewall-protected, utterly secure drive, and he still hasn't brought it home for me to hear. I think the only thing that polarized us was the way some of us spoke to others. Now, to address Dave's beef about the donations--I have not sent one, cuz I did not download, but Damien, dear, did you ever send one in? Why don't we make sure that happens, then Dave can feel better about us money-grubbing, soulless middle-class Republicans. :) Is it too late, guys? Keep your eyes open for: "Crackers - Pitfall II (atari techno mix)" I had so much fun making it laughed my ass off the whole time. Man am I glad I modified my Atari 2600 for direct audio out. I'm going to have to make more of these atari techno songs. A techno remix of the music from "Bobby Goes Home" would just be creepy. And the neat thing is you can make the songs really really long so they fill up a CD with very little actual work. Yay Damien!!! :) Except for the part about not taking it home for Julie to hear of course. I think she should really have heard the Download that Shook the World (TM)(MRJ) by now, especially after all this. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2001 11:31:16 -0500 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Re: Alloy: War Child Donations etc As per the War Child effort, as I've said all along I'm personally thrilled at how much we've raised (over $200!) and I am grateful to everyone for being so generous. My husband is p!!!!ssed off lately about life in general & as manager of this list I apologise if the tone of his letter was offensive to anyone. Please bear in mind that he never normally reads the List, doesn't know anyone here & wasn't intentionally singling anyone out as having donated or not having donated. To me, that isn't the point at all where War Child is concerned. On a personal note, I've been insisting that Dave quit his job. If anyone would like to know why Dave is p!!!!!ssed off here it is. Hearing of all the unneccesary misery in the world as production manager at the press 60 hours a week while managing people who are upset because their chair doesn't match their mousepad, and simultaneously being caught up in a system that hired him for his ability to handle things yet vehemently fights his initiative every step of the way... meanwhile also trying to concentrate on his painting career and dealing with all of the systematic nonsense and red tape inherent in this while also trying to find time to actually *paint*, has made him INSANE and I would rather live in a box than see my husband unhappy. I've in fact begun sorting things to sell so we won't be too badly stuck. This morning I urged him again to quit outright, even trying to appeal to him about the vast potential for humor inherent in it... just wait for some miniscule problem (after so much big time turmoil going on in that place) to come up and say, "well, that's it for me, see ya"! Anyway, back to the topic at hand... if anyone would still like to donate to the very worthy cause of War Child there is even a direct line where you can do so by credit card, which Lissu kindly pointed out to me over the weekend. This might be a convenient way to do so in the future, should Thomas ever wish to suggest donations in support of War Child when (hopefully) releasing more music to us. I'll post the direct connection link after work tonight - it's on my computer at home. My sincerest thanks once again to all who have kindly donated to the cause. xxxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2001 13:58:34 -0500 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: love letters! Here's a post from my Fluxlist that I'm forwarding to you, as I thought we could use a bit of fun. He's just reposted it in honor of new members joining, which is always cause for celebration. Please write this guy love letters!! And remember this is Fluxlist... so when he says you can sculpt them out of ground beef, he really means it. It would be fun if we did some for him that were inexplicably Dolby-themed, but that's just an idea... do what you like and have fun :) !!! xxxxxx Robin T Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2001 07:25:03 -0800 (PST) From: greenbelly@yahoo.com Subject: FLUXLIST: special new person reposting Welcome! Welcome all! In an attempt to bolster my slouching self-esteem, I am putting out this mail art call. I am inviting you to send me love letters. I am begging you. Pleading with you. Write them, draw them, sew them, paint them, rhyme them, sculpt them, bind them, photograph them, xerox them, collage them, tape them, videotape them, print them, type them, or make them out of ground beef. It doesn't matter. Just make them romantic in some way. Tell me you love me. Try to seduce me. Tease. Threaten to stalk. At least tell me you miss me. Don't you miss me? At least a little bit? All the other people on the fluxlist love me. They've sent me letters. You want to be just like them don't you? You want to fit in, don't you? Don't you? All letters will be compiled into a bookish form and sent to all participants.
