OK, I'll hold off till I hear from you :) & to answer Khyron's question, War Child is network of independent organizations coming together to help children around the world who are living in the midst of war. The web page is http://www.warchild.co.uk/home/home.asp if you'd like to check them out. This past Christmas, Thomas made a great gift to us of some music which had been cut from his soundtrack work for the film Fever Pitch, and had never been previously heard by the public (he had it stored on the original tape) Thomas very kindly suggested that those of us who felt the music was worth something could make charitable donations to War Child. Since Thomas very strongly disapproves of file sharing via Napster and so on, the Fever Pitch file was treated with the utmost security in mind lest it find its way to a public forum. Alloy's members have all been very respectful of Thomas' wishes for which I thank you all very much. The file is now officially unavailable for now & we are all asked not to email it around - again for security reasons. But in light of the positive feedback generated from the first Christmas release of rare music, I'm hoping Thomas might consider making it a tradition, and if you've completely missed it you may have the chance to officially hear it again under proper security measures. If anyone has any questions please email me or post to the list. Thanks again to those generous members for donating to War Child! :) xxxxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 16:04:59 -0500 From: "Robin" Subject: Alloy: more Beatnik news... Beatnik Audio Technology to Use Intel(R) Integrated Performance Primitives For Intel(R) StrongARM(R) INTEL DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE, SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Beatnik, Inc., a leading provider of enhanced audio solutions and content for the digital devices, games and the Web, today announced immediate availability of the Beatnik Audio Engine(R) (BAE) for the Intel(R) StrongARM(R) SA-1110 microprocessor. The BAE is one of the first audio engines optimized for the Intel StrongARM SA-1110 microprocessor using the Intel(R) Integrated Performance Primitives (IPP) software library to enable users to experience CD-quality audio and music through a variety of digital devices. The BAE for Intel StrongARM provides a complete audio system including MP3, MIDI, and RMF playback, multi-effects processor and a 64-channel mixer. This solution will leverage the Intel StrongARM processing power to enable developers to create gaming, music and other multimedia applications on a variety of devices including mobile phones, PDAs and set-top boxes using extremely small file sizes. BAE does not require special hardware and provides a low bandwidth audio solution for digital devices. The Beatnik player is an end user application that provides access to the BAE for audio playback on popular PDAs that use the Intel StrongARM processor. RMF allows complete songs to be encapsulated in files that can be up to 10 times smaller than the equivalent MP3 file. An SDK will be available to enable developers to create gaming, music and other multimedia applications using the BAE. "Given the immense popularity of music and games on handheld devices, the BAE will dramatically enhance audio on devices using Intel's StrongARM processing platform," said Shafath Syed, director of product marketing for Beatnik, Inc. "The BAE for the Intel StrongARM processor will deliver CD-quality applications to mobile users." Beatnik also plans to support the newly introduced Intel(R) XScale(TM) microarchitecture, Intel's next generation StrongARM architecture. Processors based on this new microarchitecture will enhance Beatnik's revolutionary wireless audio technology and provide longer battery life and higher processing power to wireless devices. "Leading companies like Beatnik demonstrate the commitment of the industry to the Intel(R) Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel PCA) as a robust development environment that speeds time-to market," said Mark Casey, director of marketing for Intel's Handheld Computing Division. "Beatniks technology, utilizing the Intel StrongARM processor and the Intel Integrated Performance Primitives, provide optimal performance in mobile environments and offer wireless device manufacturers new and compelling capabilities." About Beatnik, Inc. Beatnik offers scalable, high-quality audio solutions for digital devices, games and the Web through a combination of technology, content and services. BUT I SUBSCIBED TO ALLOY ONLY RECENTLY, BECAUSE I PURCHASED MY COMPUTER AT THE TAIL END OF YEAR 2000. I DID NOT HAVE THE CHANCE TO LISTEN TO OR DOWNLOAD THE FEVER PITCH SOUNDTRACK. YOU ARE TELLING NOT TO E-MAIL IT FOR SECURITY REASONS. BUT THIS ISN'T FAIR SINCE IT WAS ONCE AVAILABLE. I AM A VERY LONG TIME THOMAS DOLBY FAN, LIVING VERY FAR IN BRAZIL, AND BECAUSE OF THIS IT HAS BEEN VERY HARD TO BUY T.D. MATERIAL FROM OTHER COUNTRIES. BUT EVEN SO, I WAS ABLE TO BUILD (WITH MUCH SACRIFICE) A SATISFACTORY THOMAS DOLBY COLLECTION OF 12ers AND 7" SINGLES (APART FROM THE CDs). SO IN SPITE OF YOU NOT BEING ALLOWED TO CIRCULATE THE FEVER PITCH SOUND TRACK AROUND, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK TO ANYONE OF YOU, IF SOMEONE COULD E-MAIL ME IT. IT IS A CHANCE TO HAVE ONE MORE THOMAS DOLBY ITEM INTO MY COLLECTION. SINCE THOMAS ISN'T PROLIFIC IN TERMS OF RECORDING MUSIC, AN ITEM LIKE THAT IS A TREASURE AND MUST NOT BE SPARED! AS YOU ALL ARE FANS LIKE ME, YOU CAN UNDERSTAND MY FEELINGS OR WHAT I AM FELING NOW! IMAGINE THAT THIS WAS HAPPENING TO YOU! WOULDN'T YOU BE GLAD TO HAVE THE SOUNDTRACK? WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO HEAR IT FOR THE FIRST TIME? WOULDN IT BE GREAT TO RECEIVE IT BY E-MAIL, SINCE IT IS NOT AROUND ANY MORE? WELL, I HOPE SOMEONE AT ALLOY CAN BE MY FRIEND AND UNDERSTAND MY "DISPAIR" AND E-MAIL IT TO ME. THANK YOU SO MUCH. If you do, you may yet get to hear the Fever Pitch music officially - since, if Thomas does (hopefully!) continue releasing rare music from his own archives as a tradition for the holidays, it will probably come up again. One way we can all help to promote this happening is by COMPLETELY RESPECTING Thomas' express wishes about the way his music is distributed. If you want to talk about copyright, the people who were here @ Christmastime and downloaded the file really can't email it to you or anyone else, because it doesn't belong to them - it belongs solely to Thomas as his personal, artistic and intellectual property. No one here wants to deny you anything - it simply isn't our place to make the decision of how the music is distributed. Given what we know about his treatment by the music business in his earlier days you are sure to understand his natural desire to be in control of his personal property now. You must be his friend in this, Paolo, and not violate (or ask other people to violate) the trust he has placed in his many long-time fans. Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 23:58:19 EST From: Spencer2424@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: FEVER PITCH SOUNDTRACK Hmmm...this is an interesting debate. And I agree with you completely Robin, but it is a rather intriguing situation in terms of artistic rights and consumer desires. Unlike the Napster situation, the Fever Pitch recordings are not commercially available, regardless of how much money you might care to spend. And it's not really a bootleg situation either, as the music was recorded and released by the artist himself. The only equivalent that comes to mind is the infamous Tori Amos "Y Kant Tori Read" disc. Once fans got wind of it, the demand for that thing was ridiculous. In fact, it still is, despite the many bootleg versions that have emerged in recent years. And of course, the great irony is, it's hardly what you could call her best work (or even good work, as far as Tori is concerned). But to a fan, it's like finding a lost treasure; a secret room in your very own house, that you walked by for years, and never knew was there. But once you've discovered it, the desire to get inside is overwhelming! Who knows what you might find! Golden Coins! Secret Diaries! Jimmy Hoffa's body! Pamela Lee Anderson's implants! The possibilities are endless! Never mind that it's probably just a dusty old broom closet - it must be explored! So, I can understand where Paolo is coming from. But as you said, there is a price to paid for robbing from the goose who laid the golden egg. After all, Thomas is under no obligation to share his personal archives with us. And if we as a group do not respect his wishes, whatever rapport Alloy has worked to develop with him may be lost forever. And that would be a shame, as Alloy is one of the few artist-based chat groups I've experienced that seems to have a tangible connection to the artist they so adore. Anyway, my two-and-a-half cents worth. And honestly, I'm not so worried about Fever Pitch. What I want to know is, when do we get a new album! The pop world could use something a bit more substantive than the current Britany/Backstreet Boys phenomenon. Save us, Thomas!
