Hi, Quiz time: Thomas Dolby and George Harrison from the Beatles both appeared on the same compilation record in 1985. Can you name it ? Clue: It was an EMI release OK its a tough one. Answer and picture on the link below http://shu.smolensk.su:8100/~oea/tubla/gpinf.htm Bet you haven't got THAT one !!!! Actually - I bet you probably have! :-) I noticed the .SU in the above address and so chopped up the URL to just the front bit to find out more about this site. Turns out its come from the 'Smolensk Humanitarian University.' http://shu.smolensk.su:8100/eng/science.shtml Liepzig and Budapest get a mention at the bottom of the above page but not in a TMDR sense - - Just a coincidence Mr Bond. . Anyway.. So I looked on Amazon.com for the record and surprise surprise no dice. One for the record collectors? Maybe? Tim. Hi to our Russian and former soviet friends. Which reminds me how many languages on dolby records.. English Russian French Hungarian Latin QED - oh you speak french Mexican or spanish ? (Hot Sauce) Plus? Last year I finally saw MAGMA in concert here in lux and they were mesmeric ! MAGMA invented an alien language called KOBIAN ! and recorded several albums in this strange mysterious language that nobody except themselves understood in the 70's and 80s !! Endless lyrics and streems of rhetoric all in Kobian ! Thing which freaked me out at the concert last year was they were people actually singing along - who apparently knew all the words !! One of the wiredest gigs I've ever been too! It was a blast though ! Hey Tim, it may not have been your intention... but this would make a great Tommy Awards category :) So far we've gotten a lot of great ideas for categories coming through here... but we need more! Any other ideas? xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 12:55:03 -0800 (PST) From: Brian Clayton Subject: Alloy: Tommy Awards I guess I'm not in a creative mood lately, because I haven't come up with any good Tommy Awards ideas. Robin, do you still have the list from the first Tommy Awards to remind us of what catagories have already been done? In fact, does anyone still have a copy of my post from oh-so-many years ago that kicked off this whole thing? The only catagory from that which I recall is "best usage of the term 'spam tin.'" I lost my archive of Alloy postings prior to last year, so I can't dig it up myself...though I suppose it's buried on smoe.org somewhere, but there's no search function there that I can see. I think it would be fine if some categories were repeated. We have so many new people who've joined us since the first Tommys were held... though of course this also means lots of potential when it comes to gathering fresh new ideas too, hopefully! The FES folks are organizing the contest quickly so if everyone can get their ideas in it'd be great. Even if you don't think it'd make for a realistic category.... send in ideas anyway!! :) > In fact, does anyone still have a copy of my post from oh-so-many years > ago that kicked off this whole thing? I've been going through the archives for old Song Translations, since we'd fallen into discussion of these on so many occasions over Alloy's five-year history. I'll certainly keep an eye out for anything to do with the Tommys. Brian, do you remember when you brought it up? Must have been within the first year of Alloy's existence, if the first Tommy Awards was in 1997... xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 20:20:17 -0500 From: "Robin" Subject: Alloy: beginnings of new Interviews page w/ Images :) I'm in the process of typing up the next Interview for my "Images and Interviews" page which I haven't updated in ages... it's a nice long interview about Thomas' involvement with the Gate to the Mind's Eye project, from a 1995 Keyboard magazine article. It'll take me quite a while to type out all of the text (well worth it though as it's a great interview!! hopefully I'll have it done by the end of the week) Meanwhile I couldn't wait to publish what little I've done so far, because the pictures are so fantastic, so I've just stuck them on my site without much text thus far... to be updated later. If you'd like to see the beginnings of this page please go to: http://www.robinthurlow.addr.com/TMDR1995.htm The top image is one I'm especially proud of because it's the first time I've gotten to play with merging two seperate scans (top and bottom needed to be scanned seperately due to size). And he's wearing white PVC Chucks - which I **love** and just can't get over!!! And another, with the black leather jacket over my favorite shirt of his (I've seen him in this in some other photo sessions), photographed against a white backdrop, is particularly good too IMHO. By the way Beth, which TMDR video is the one that gave you the migraine? xxxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #37 **************************
