Hi, Robyn Hitchcock was the vocalist and one of the guitarists in the Soft Boys who were a brilliant live band on the London scene in the early 1980s. I recommend their album UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT as a good overview of their style. Incidentally the title track is about two statues that get bored being stuck in the same place all the time - so one day - or perhaps that should be one night - they decide to go off down to the seaside together. They creep out in the night when noone is looking and in secret make their way down to the sea. They arrive at the seaside in the moonlight and go out for a swim togther .......but along comes a giant squid and.....well.... Later The soft boys gave way and Robyn had an altogther more professional sound with his band the Egyptians. This period saw their superb album 'ELEMENT OF LIGHT. I'm a big fan of Robyn Hitchcock although I found his recent STOREFRONT HITCHCOCK soundtrack album a bit dissapointing. I didn'yt get to see the assoiated film which was made by a friend Jonathon Demme. { JD used to listen to RH records in his bedsit in Edingburgh). The soft boys were an inspiration to many and were very much in vogue - - not least because of SELIGMAN and HITCHCOCK. Matt SELIGMAN also played bass with BRUCE Woolly and the Camera club when Tom was keyboard player. Its hard to know where to start with Robyn Hitchcock. I think he and Thomas Dolby would be a fantastic collabouration and although RH is Keith on WHITE CITY I am not aware of any other work of theirs together. For me the common point is the fantastically vivid lyrics and cinematic content. If youre into guitar driven music about bored stautes escaping to the sea to secretly go midnight swimming on the beach "Underwater moonlight - sets the body free - - Underwater moonlight - baby you and me" Then Robyn and the soft boys are for you. Underwater moonlight is a classic of his - but as a starting point I would buy his CD ELEMENT OF LIGHT which also features M Selligman and is beautifully recorded unlike the underwater moonlight CD which is really more like a collection of demoes. He has also written some very very sad songs which you should be aware of. His albums can go from Joy to despair quite quickly. But they are never dull. For many Robyn Hitchcock was the soft boys, but to be honest thats a bit tough on the others. I'd love it if TMDR and RH were to make an album together. I have Storefront Hitchcock on DVD and what really makes it interesting is his rablings between the songs. I don't think the voice of Keith on White City was scripted. - -Keith (in a white snow covered city) - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Hudson" To: Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 4:50 AM Subject: Alloy: The Soft Boys...... > > Hi, > > Robyn Hitchcock was the vocalist and one of the guitarists in the Soft > Boys who were a brilliant live band on the London scene in the early > 1980s. > > I recommend their album UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT as a good overview of their > style. > > Incidentally the title track is about two statues that get bored being > stuck in the same place all the time - so one day - or perhaps that > should be one night - they decide to go off down to the seaside together. > They creep out in the night when noone is looking and in secret make > their way down to the sea. Couldn't you arrange to be bitten by another spider to paralize your face and take the pain away? But that root canal stuff can be really nasty. I've had two done in years gone by, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. If there's an abcess, can't you at least get some antibiotics to relieve the pain until the dentist can make a start on it? Last time I had one I had to complete the course of antibiotics before the dentist would start treatment. > > I was begging my friends at Judo practice to knock the tooth out of my > head. ^_^ > Erm, wouldn't Judo players PULL it out. Oh man, Crackers, that sucks! I have lived the dream of the root canal, and it is No Fun. I appreciate your shotgun dream - I've had similar things happen when I've had acute pain like yours. The subconscious is an amazing thing. I now know why my arm feels like it's going to fall off. I found out yesterday that I somehow tore the tendon that would normally firmly hold muscle to my elbow. Lovely, huh? The doctor gave me Vioxx, this pain drug made for people with osteoarthritis, and I must say it is deadening the pain significantly. Still, I have my arm bandaged up and it's no fun. Weeks to heal. Yuckeroo. I will wish good things your way. Shame the codeine isn't helping. I envy you Canadians with your Rx-free codeine. I'd be over the border every day, buying it up, if I lived a smidge closer. Gawd bless NAFTA. ;-) I now return you to your Dolby content. Cheers, Melissa - -- Melissa R.
