Also, as promised, many of the images in the Gallery are now clickable for nice large versions, which include Thomas' notes for each. These give some great insight into the background goings-on of these photos. I *really* love this! Check out the Song Notes gallery. There's something I'd never known of before, the lyrics to New Toy as originally written in French! Keith, maybe you can run this through your translator & see what it comes up with... xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 19:43:35 -0500 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: War Child update, some very self-indulgent rambling and a question War Child update... I've gotten donations from 11 Alloy members now, and our total is an even $200 thus far! Several more of you have written to me to tell me your donations are in the mail, so it looks like we should have a nice big sum to send to War Child. I'm planning to send it off the second week of February (or thereabout) to allow for postal system delays & for those coming in later for the second FTP posting. Thanks to everyone for your generosity!! I'll post the letter I write to War Child so you can all read it. Your names will all be listed, as will the reason for our coming together to donate to the cause. For my self-indulgent rambling I'd like to say that I was very traumatized earlier this week, when I had to go around with *brown hair* for three days, thanks to a tragic hair color miscalculation. This stuff is tricky when you mix your own, like looking through colored lenses (and mind you, I think most people with brown hair look gorgeous - - but if I don't have some unnatural radioactive shade of red on my head lately I feel like I'm going around in disguise) Though I've finally overcoming the problem and becoming very deeply, darkly, blackly red again as of yesterday evening (thank you Miss Clairol! :) my trauma is far from over... for I've just learned I'm supposed to give a 45-minute presentation to the entire library staff about bookbinding & preservation next month. The problem is not the public speaking aspect of it - I've never minded this - it's that I've got to come up with a way to make it interesting for people who are rather staid and do a lot of filing, and are following the latest trend in thinking that the books should all be digitized and thrown in the trash in order to make room for more dorm space. One question for the musicians of Alloy who practice at home.... we've talked all about soundproofing before when it comes to keyboards, cellos, guitars etc, but does anyone know if there are any specific ways to soundproof for drums? shutting up for now Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 20:42:09 -0500 From: "Melissa R. Jordan" Subject: Re: Alloy: War Child update, some very self-indulgent rambling anda question Robin, Sorry about the hair problem - I can sympathize. My hair started turning white when I was twenty, and now, without hair color, it would be all white/grey. I have done some at home stuff that turned nightmarish pretty dang fast. In the words of Lame Duck Bubba, "Ah feel yer pain." Funny you mentioned soundproofing for drums - my next door neighbor, the horrid Israeli hairdresser with the penchant for bad, bad, bad North African disco music, has been treating me to his tuneage too long today. I have countered with an impromptu concert of Uzbek drum music, badly played by me. I hope he enjoyed it as much as I did performing for him. He is very quiet now. I'm peeved because I *still* haven't been paid, a week after my payment should have arrived and that I'm losing a day of work tomorrow because of traffice concerns for the freaking Ricky Martin concert at the Lincoln Memorial... Important!!! - You will need to leave your apartment for this one. Put on one of the fingertips tracks and set the CD player on single repeat. Turn up the volume. Leave for a few hours, go see a long movie. Come back. You will not hear any noise next door because your neighbors have since been taken away to the asylum. - -Keith (yes, I actually did this once) Stansell - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Melissa R. But, alas, the american college system has us tied down in paying for our (defunct) school loans at the moment, and we're a bit strapped for cash. Consider this an apology. That, and understand, in a dark way, that we are sure that there will indeed be another war to repair in the near future, rather unfortunately. Yeah, I know, bleak outlook on things... but hey, let us all recall, as my grandfather would bring up... "the war to end all wars." Enough said. I was thinking of TMBG over the weekend, as the color kiddie page in the Washington Post was all about John and John, their music for "Malcolm" and how they compose music to match each character. I've never read the kiddie page before - I was amused that I found it more enlightening than the rest of the Style Section! Muchas gracias for the suggestion, Keith! Jordan Director, Compass Rose Consulting International (http://www.askcrc.com) Owner/Artist, Compass Rose Studios (http://www.crstudios.com) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 01:04:00 -0500 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: (OT) how much of a geek am I We've just come back from seeing "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (which I could go on & on about - please, everyone, see this movie!!!) but as I'm sitting there listening to it I actually recognised Yo-Yo Ma's cello.... and yes, it turned out to be him when I read the credits. Am I a geek or what!! Ma has both a Strad and a Montagnana, & it sounds to me like the Strad he's playing in this score. Remember when I was complaining about something someone said about 'even a cello' being technology..! Go to this film, and you'll hear one fine piece of technology from the 1700s that can never be matched... it's really very much the height of achievement for its genre. Of course as with any piece of technology, somebody has to know how to make it go, and Ma is an artist and genius. Since it's hard to see this guy in concert I recommend seeing this film if you want to hear the true richness of his playing and the Strad cello itself (recorded just isn't the same, but the theater's sound system just about makes up for it) Sorry, but I just had to ramble on a bit more tonight. Hearing that cello made me wish really hard that my *own* cello weren't so crappy, and that my wrists would get better more quickly. My tendons are all messed up from wrestling with this beastly cello of mine. For months I've been waking up with my wrists twisting inward so I've been sleeping with my orange Snufflupagus to keep them straight (plus he's so cuddly..! :) It beats having to wear braces on my wrists in any case. This is why I asked about the drums... I have a crazy idea that taking up drumming would help strengthen my wrists while keeping me musical. Bad idea? Good idea? Who knows? Maybe I'll turn out to be the next Budgie. xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #13 **************************
