I'm so sorry. I was working from a European-made day-minder the head of my department gave me for Christmas. I came to the realization that I'd left this date out, just twenty minutes ago in the shower. Anyone see any more flaws or have any suggestions? I'll fix them as soon as I get home from work tonight. Just thought I'd drop you a note to say I'm still here. Let's see. I've been offline for a couple of reasons, busy shedule, holiday mayhem, and illness. I just spent a month coughing up nasty reddish-pink gooey stuff from my lungs. Some sort of particularily unfriendly virus made it's home in me and pretty much just left me lying on the couch praying for the sweet realease of death. My doctor tells me the virus is no longer in my system but it has left some temporary damage in it's wake to my respitory tract that leaves me vulnerable to most uncomfortable spasms so I've been taking things rather easy lately. To make matters worse I came down with this virus the day of my national live television debut on Much Music (canadian version of M-TV). I played accordion on an Ed the Sock special (I was kinda like his Paul Shaffer) and I became JoJo the Mute Accordionist shortly into the show, not singing and barely talking as I completely blew out my vocal chords going into the first commercial break. I was also so hopped up on cold medication that I could barely keep awake and was far less than my usual outgoing and peppy self. But the producer said he'd like to have me back again in the new year so who knows maybe I'll get another shot at my 15 minutes of fame. Apart from being ill I've also been busy performing lately with my new musical partner. Shih'Tzu may be put to sleep sometime soon. All the band members seem to be either breeding or getting really sweet day jobs and we haven't rehearsed in ages. But I'm now playing with my friend Steve Didemus who is a local musicain/producer who has produced albums for many Hamilton/Calidonia area folk musicians. We've played together before but usually with other bands that have hired us for our talent. Finally we decided to go out and get some gigs of our own and just have some fun. Although it hasn't been much fun for me lately with my messed up lungs. You know you're sounding really bad when Tom Waits comes up to you and says "Geeze your voice sounds really rough!" But I did discover that a few shots of whiskey can burn the goo out of your throat. And I've discovered that hacking your lungs out during a gig is a good way to get free whiskey from the bar (who usually only give musicians free beer/pop around here). Then of course there is this whole holiday madness thing that has likewise been quite effective at keeping me offline. Speaking of which I'm sorry to hear that I missed out on Thomas' Christmas present. Oh well... with my crappy internet account I probably wouldn't be able to download it anyways. And speaking of crappy internet accounts... I don't know how much longer I will be on this HWCN account as I will be getting either DSL or Cable modem sometime this year (hopefully sooner than later). I feel like a dinosaur having used text-only internet access for so long. Ironic since I was one of the beta-testers for Cable Wave internet access (had it free for almost a year so they could work the bugs out). Anyways, hope everyone here is doing well and had a nice holiday. I got a digital chromatic guitar tuner for X-mas. As well as a copy of Pokemon Silver (yes I'm a geek) and a mitre saw (another reason I've been offline so much... home rennovations). I also finally cashed in the Sam the Record Man gift cirtificate my Nana got me last year and picked up a CD of the soundtrack to Blade Runner (which I have wanted for ages) as well as a CD of the Dire Straits album "Brothers In Arms" (which I lost my cassette of some time ago). Crackers! My compliments all around. Just one question... I may still be sleeping here.. but how does one go to the next month in the calendar? I couldn't find a page turn or a link to continue past January. Am I just daft or is there a trick on the page that I missed? Ciao for now.. Hi Mark, There is no 'February' created yet, only January... so you're not missing anything. I haven't gotten any other artwork (until 'November' that is :) so I'm keeping the contributions deadlines rolling, and just going month-by-month for now. For months where there are no contributions I'll put up portrait images of Thomas, or something taken from the various album art. I'm glad you like the calendar! I think I will get this calendar-making software. It's so easy to use and to make updates (I've just corrected my ML King day and artwork title mistakes in less than five minutes, including republication) Also I must say it's shockingly easy to update things in general, now that I don't have an AOL account! Thomas had been aware that some people might miss the download (either by being away for the holidays or because they couldn't manage the download) and he's making arrangements so that you will be able to hear it soon. Please post here or get in touch with me privately and I'll email you with details. xxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 00:29:03 +0000 From: Slarvibarglhee Subject: Re: Alloy: I'm Still Alive Chris Cracknell wrote: > Hey gang, sorry I haven't been very vocal lately. I think you need to wear an environment suit and breath filtered air. Seriously, I'm sorry to hear you've been under the weather again, and at the worst possible time by the sound of it. I'll keep my digits crossed for you for your return performance with Ed the Sock (I'm assuming this is a GOOD thing??) > > > > And speaking of crappy internet accounts... For one thing, it's slower than my PC. For another it crashes my cable set-top box more often than my PC crashes. Also, it's not a real internet service anyway, just a few of their 'selected' pages. They're supposed to be introducing full internet browsing, at an extra charge of #5.00 per month, but I don't think I'll bother. I get it for free at work anyway. Finally, their e-mail service is completely hopeless. Trying to type messages with a TV remote is a pain, although you can buy one of their keyboards for around #20.00, but why bother. You don't even get an address book with the thing, so you ahve to type all addresses in full, every time you write a message. So much for the digital revolution. > > Anyways, hope everyone here is doing well and had a nice holiday. > I got a digital chromatic guitar tuner for X-mas. Cool! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 21:33:38 -0500 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: New updates at FES! I've just been informed there are new updates at the FES!! http://www.thomasdolby.com I've just been there, and I'm going back in a moment... I just had to let everyone know about this before I forget how to type entirely. This is worse than when I saw my friend in the chicken movie on Cinemax.. I'm giving myself a headache because I'm so excited... I am being completely spoiled by these new updates!!! If you look into the Gallery, you will see lots of fantastic images of Thomas, including several new sections of the Gallery which feature pictures of Thomas in his off-hours (including a beautiful family portrait, and lots of windsurfing!), in his work at Beatnik, new live performance shots, and other facets of his life. One thing that I've been dying to see but never thought I had any hope of seeing, in fact I thought it so hopeless I felt it would be too stupid to even inquire seriously - are some of Thomas' handwritten music notes, which he's now got featured here in their own Gallery space. The images are small (hmmm, time for Robin to get a new high-res screen?) but the reason I've been just dying to see these is that he'd once said in an interview that he never knew how to write music and so he made up his own way of writing it. When I was little, I used to try to write down music I'd heard in my dreams because I didn't have a tape recorder to hum into, but I wanted to try to remember it somehow - and made up my own system of writing music! I'd never heard of anyone else in the world ever doing such a thing for any reason (or at least, not that they'd admit to :) until Thomas said this in that interview. I've been wanting to see what his version looked like. His looks very nice, incidentally... mine looks completely strange by comparison (with anything that goes into a 'minor' ie flat or sharp, compared to the rest of the music, written in italic rather than straight up & down.. you get the idea. I was a weird kid!) Also check out the Reference Library, where our Song Interpretations are featured... you'll see many names there you recognize. In the Inner Sanctum, there are two great new features: one is called "Mr. Dolby Remembers" in which he writes about various things he experienced during his music career. The other is a sort of calendar feature, called "Thomas Watch" which lists Thomas' upcoming engagements, including a television appearance which we've got to look out for..! My deepest gratitude to Thomas for putting so much effort into providing new FES content... thank you for sharing so much of your life and career with us. The photographs are just beautiful (he knew these'd be my favorite part I'll bet!!! :) xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 21:48:33 EST From: ScreenKiss1969@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: New updates at FES! By the way.. don't forget Carnival in Brasil and Trinidad February 25-27 and the Palio in Italy.. usually on August 15 or 16.. if I recall. I might get to go to Rio this year! Last year I had a free airline ticket to go and the day before I left the pilots went on strike.. I was miserable for a week as I watched the party on the nightly news.. Ahh well.. everything happens for a reason. Got to run!! Ciao for now..
