Stretched this can also been taken to mean 'a girl without grace and charm' or 'a girl without much talent'. However - I like to think of this - as not necessarily an insult because sometimes getting things wrong can be quite an attractive trait. [he says hopefully]. Anyway nobody really likes a smartarse ........ There must be a male / masculin vesrion of ingenoue....whatever it is I am probably one of them....:-) On the subject of Louisiana I love the tex mex zydeco accordian thing and was lucky a few years ago to see a guy called Flaco Jimmenez at the Cambridge Folk Festival who really went down a storm with some outragiously fast wild dance music on the accordian with his band!! Ive also heard Rory Gallaghers tribute to Cliffton Chernier and I liked the inclusion of the accordian work by Thomas Dolby on the Astronauts Album. That's what I understand, too.. at least in American English an "ingenue" is an innocent girl -- and not to be taken as an insult. Unless she thinks of herself as worldly, I guess.. ? I'm not sure what I might have missed the last few days. I'll try and get caught up. I started at the end of the new mail list, so I could see what was going on most recently. What I will warn is, any of you who've heard someone you know has this year's flu: do -everything you can- to keep from getting it. I cannot recall *ever* being so sick. It was just awful. Two days at 103-104F definately does a number on you. Childbirth wasn't even this bad. The following is a message Thomas has asked me to forward to everyone here... enjoy! :) xxxxx Robin T HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! I'd like to wish Alloyites a very happy holiday time. The recent discussion on the Alloy list about the 1985 movie "Fever Pitch", for which I composed and recorded the sound track, led me to dig through my vaults. I came up with this 15-minute reel of outtakes. Turns out it's something of a lost treasure, so as a special Xmas present to Alloy subscribers and Flat Earth Society members, I've made it into an extended MP3 file for your enjoyment. It's available as a 14MB download at . The filename is case-sensitive, so paste it into your browser or re-type it carefully! It will be online only until 9-00am PST on Dec 26th, after which it will be taken down to minimize the risk of piracy. I'll have to trust you not redistribute it to your friends, and especially not to post it to any bulletin boards or Napster-type services, because I don't approve of them! If you feel there's value in this gift, please show your appreciation by making a contribution to the War Child Foundation. This very worthwhile charity helps children who are victims of wars in Kosovo, the Middle East etc. Something like $10 would be terrific. Make a check out to WAR CHILD and mail it to: Robin Thurlow, 8 Grand Boulevard # 1 East, Binghamton NY 13905. Robin will pass the checks on to War Child in the UK and let us know how much was raised. As an interesting side note, Robin helped me out with this project in a curious way. The tape was a 1/2" Ampex reel to reel from the early '80s. Many tapes from that era will not play on modern machines because they have accumulated moisture, and this makes the oxide sticky. The only way to restore them is to bake them. In the past I have had this done at great expense by professional audio service companies. However, Robin pointed me to where there is an excellent recipe for tape baking in your own kitchen! So last night I sat up till 3am, terrified my tape would go up in flames, but-amazingly-it worked like a dream. [The formula for 1/2'" tapes BTW is 5 hours at 150 degrees Fahrenheit.] Anyway, here's the listing for the pieces included in the composite:- 1. GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD (T.Dolby) This was intended for a scene where Ryan O'Neal is contemplating suicide. The scene was taken out by the studio because it was 'too depressing' and therefore the song ended up on the MGM cutting room floor. It is graced by a gorgeous sax solo by an English musician whose name, sadly, I've forgotten. 2. HAYLEY'S MILL (T.Dolby) Another nice piece that didn't get used. 3. I'M ON MY WAY (Traditional arr. T. Dolby) This is a traditional gospel song, sung by the remarkable Tata Vega, who later sang for me on "Armageddon", the opening cut of "Gate to the Mind's Eye." 4. FEVERTHEME (T.Dolby) You may well recognize this! 5. FOR AMY (T.Dolby) Ryan O'Neal's character in the movie has a daughter. He spends very little time with her because he is such a rotten loser of a dad who's blown all his money in Vegas. This is her theme. 6. FAIRGROUND MUSIC (T.Dolby) Pretty standard fare for a fairground scene. Can't wait to hear the Crackers cover version of it! 7. HAKKETT TO PIECES (T.Dolby) A neat trumpet piece, sadly cut short here probably because the music editor faded it in and out of the final mix. 8. DO NOT FORSAKE ME OH MY DARLING (Traditional) The director Richard Brooks was very fond of this song and wanted a new arrangement of it for a comical car chase sequence. It's all done on a Fairlight. You may recognize the forward/backward gunshot sample that also opens the first side of Prefab Sprout's excellent "Two Wheels Good" album. 9. FEVER REPRISE (T.Dolby) I'd completely forgotten that "Budapest By Blimp" owed its origins to two movie themes-the groove came from a song on "Gothic" soundtrack, and the bridge chords and sampled vocal came from this cue from "Fever Pitch"! (Other songs that trace their roots back to this movie include "Neon Sisters" and "The Ability To Swing.") Enjoy!! I would really love it if he would bear these Fever Pitch pieces in mind for any future work he might do (apart from the ones he's already used them in, which are so amazing to hear in different forms) because they are really beautiful and deserve to be acknowledged in his catalogue of work. He's also the most amazing person in the world for taking the time and care to put together this special MP3 for his fans. Again, thank you Thomas!! The tape baking... because Mr Dolby was so very cool and calm in his discussion of the tape baking process with me, I'd assumed he'd done this before and had simply misplaced his directions. I literally had no idea it was to be his first time attempting it! But of course, I knew he would do it perfectly :) I'm very impressed at his (apparently?) first foray into the preservation world. Imagine my surprise when I realized some of those tapes had gotten all gooey. Thankfully, not everything was archived on those tapes, but some things were, and I'd thought they were lost. I never threw them out, though - partly because I'm a bit of a pack rat, and partly because I thought there was a thread of hope that they'd be saved. I haven't baked one yet, but I'm ready to - I'm looking up the 'recipe' for 7" reels of 1/4" tape right now. Today's theme ingredient is reel-to-reel tape! Allez cuisine!
