Thank you Robin and Thomas! Aren't we lucky to appreciate such a jolly nice chap! "What's all that banging?" - LOL! I've passed that on to Tristan. Darnit I'm not going to rest easy until I've seen this movie (as well as Gothic). A long and lonely quest scouring the second hand video shops of the land... Can I add your comments to my web-page, please Thomas? Or shall I settle for adding a link to the relevant Alloy digest? Now then... what's the phone number of that video shop I've never looked in yet... +AndyJ+ - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Get your free email from AltaVista at http://altavista.iname.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 10:38:26 +0000 From: "Tim Hudson" Subject: Alloy: last one from tim in lux for a while... Tim, RE missing subs - I found a list of missing submarines..perhaps it wasn't the Affray tragedy after all..theres been so many It just goes to show how people adapt songs and personalise them to fit their own thoughts(Once a song is born and released into the ether it morphs into a myriad of individual personal meanings and gets bound with endless complex associations - and mis interpretations).. Like my first mail .'return to Albury' (it was Mulberry) ! On the subject of mis heard things.. I read recently in a magazine called 'Fortean Times' that an elderly lady had collapsed in hospital because the Nurse in her strong 'Estuary' London english accent, had told her "Were going to send you home today" apparently the woman though she had said " Were going to send you home to die"! Anyway . Lists of missing subs and therefore possible influences? http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/jdholt/loss/acc.html When I looked the Kursk was missing from this list. About HMS Affray. http://website.lineone.net/~britannic98/prevexp/affray.htm to close: from an XTC fans site promoting the talents of Andy Partridge the following about his contributions with TMDR ( I have lost the site url). Maybe its of interest? Video collection EP. Andy Partridge contributes harmonica to the music of Europa and The Pirate Twins, but does not appear in the video.  VHS-NTSC, Sony Video USA, 45, 1984.  LDS-NTSC, LDC Japan, JM 034-0007, October 1984. This is what I find so cool about having our Song Interpretations - a song will appeal to each person in a totally unique way! As you've heard, we're gathering Alloy members' different impressions of Thomas' songs for a projected feature on his FES page, which is being developed. In interviews throughout his career, Thomas has always expressed a desire to be more 'in touch' with his audience, and has said that having direct feedback from fans through getting to talk with them backstage etc is the most meaningful thing to him, much more than record sales or chart placement could ever be. The Song Interpretations here, I imagine, must have the distinction of providing him with a more intimate sort of feedback and direct interaction than he's ever been able to experience before with such a large group of fans. It's amazing when you think of what a huge advantage the internet is in getting people communicating!! This to me is the most amazing thing about it. Far from 'isolating' people socially, as many had at first feared, the internet is in fact uniting people from all points on the globe. Anyway, I love the interpretations too... it's wonderful to see how personally people take Thomas' music, and really have made it a part of their lives on a very deep level. The interpretations have been on ice for a while because of travel and schedule complications - Mary has kindly offered to take over the organization of this project but is beseiged by schedule complications of her own! - so in the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions for the next Song of the Week, please jump forward and lay one on us :) xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 15:30:24 -0500 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: crackers on TV! crackers, can you get images of this to us somehow? It was forwarded to my by Lissu's Mum. No offense meant. Slarv - ---------------------------------------------------------- Subject: To the citizens of the United States of America - ---------------------------------------------------------- To the citizens of the United States of America: In the light of your failure to elect a President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy. Your new Prime Minister (The Rt. Hon. Tony Blair MP, for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect: 1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium". Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up "vocabulary". Using the same twenty seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up "interspersed". And stop saying, "Tell me about it," when in actual fact you mean, "DON'T tell me about it." 2. There is no such thing as "US English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. 3. You should learn to distinguish between the English and Australian accents. It really isn't that hard. 4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys. 5. You should relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen", but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half way through. 6. You should stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American "football" is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays "American" football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies). We are hoping to get together at least a US rugby sevens side by 2005. 7. You should declare war on Quebec and France, using nuclear weapons if they give you any merde. The 97.85% of you who were not aware that there is a world outside your borders should count yourselves lucky. The Russians have never been the bad guys. "Merde" is French for "shit". 8. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 8th will be a new national holiday, but only in England. It will be called "Indecision Day". 9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean. 10. Please tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us crazy. ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V5 #282 ***************************
