I think One of our submarines might be influenced by the British Submarine HMS Affray which went missing on manouevers after the war. A search was made by the British but in completely the wrong area. When she was finally located everyone was presumed dead. She was found way out of position and everybody suspected a cover up. This happened after the war - I think it was in the early sixties but I might be wrong. I know because my fathers boss at work [he was an architect working for the UK Government - lost his only son in the 'accident'. I think he was one of the officers on board - and his only child. Just why the sub was where it was and why the search failed to find it remained a mystery. So thats what I think ..........but of course I could be wrong. I'll look up HMS Affray on the net and see what I can find. Here is what he's said: "It was the first ever movie scoring work I did. Quincy Jones was one of the producers, and apparently had heard my music and approached me for the score. I recorded it all on the old MGM lot in Los Angeles, which was pretty romantic--the security guard at the gate waving me through every day with a "good morning Mr.Dolby!" and eating lunch every day in the Commissary, amid echoes of many a famous bustup between Kathryn Hepburn and Cary Grant. I recorded the score mainly using my Fairlight, the third in the UK, which I had just taken delivery of (Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush got # 1 and 2). Unfortunately the director Richard Brooks--who is no longer with us--was part deaf, and would often react to my sampled music with comments like "what's all that banging?" So we got behind schedule and I was having to crank out about 6 original pieces of music per day. A bit of a heartbreak, as the movie was clearly not going to be a blockbuster and Ryan O'Neal was way below the fabulous form of his "Paper Moon" days. But the experience was fruitful for me nonetheless--and in fact, many songs that later showed up on my albums, first originated during those sessions. If you do manage to find a copy of the movie to rent, you may spot some pieces that bear more than a passing resemblance to "The Key to her Ferrari," "The Ability To Swing", "Neon Sisters" and others. I'm afraid I've forgotten about the famous shin-torture scene though. I must have supressed it." end quote :) So there you have it! Now I'll have to rent this movie if only for the 'shin-torture scene' (hmmm!) As always, my deepest thanks to you Thomas, for taking the time to share this with us in spite of your doubtlessly hectic schedule abroad. It's always wonderful to hear from you! xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 23:58:34 -0500 (EST) From: CRACKERS Subject: Alloy: My Fellow Canadians...
