[Robin Thurlow ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 13:21:38 +0000 From: "Tim Hudson" Subject: Alloy: alloy - loads of questions !! Hi, You'll either love this or hate it - Please excuse me - - its my first go on the list……….. 10 Questions any answers? [that’s 11 questions then - ed] 1) I love you Goodbye - How did Terry Jackson die? 2) TMDR on video - Any recommendations ? 3) Robyn Hitchcock and TMDR - apart from 'White City' - - any other collaborations? 4) Cloudburst - "Return to Albury" - Albury near Shere in Surrey UK? - if not where? 5) TMDR Jokes - are there any ? (some of my best Jokes are friends) 6) Autobiography - I'd quite like to start one off called 'The Geography of Thomas Dolby' starting with Cairo….maybe the best place to put this would be on the Web? It would consist of a list of places where significant things happened including places mentioned in his works. I'd like to see how he maps out 'spatially' as it were…….Ultimately and with huge amounts of imagination it would become an interactive map………..oh sonified with Beatnik of course………...but then again I think you can go too far and I do respect his privacy so perhaps it’s a daft idea? Yes it truly is - its the sort of thing Peter Gabriel would do. ( I remember an interactive CDROM Peter Gabriel brought out with clips from 'Sledgehammer' on it. - For some reason it kept saying "Watch out for the Love Bomb" and had a clip of people walking through the crowd at WOMAD festival. - Rubbish really - - when you think about it. That was supposed to be the cutting edge. I think my brother snapped it in half eventually……anyway……where were we? 7) TMDR with Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club on UK TV's The Old Grey Whistle Test - anyone else remember it ? I rushed out and bought the album afterwards - which goes to prove TMDR was a TV star before he became a video star and then an internet star. 8) That photo of a young Mr Dolby on the back of the Camera club album - - Why is his hand like that on the table ? It looks as if the photographer has just stepped forward and said to him "No son - put your hand on the table like this - There - ok ok everyone now hold it" - Click! He looks amazingly shy and awkward! 9) Obscure ways of looking at his music number 433427… 'Mulu' - could this be influenced at a subconcious level by Joni Mitchells 'The Jungle Line" from the Hissing of Summer Lawns album? 10) Is this OK for my first posting ? Is this the sort of thing you want or expect at Alloy ? 11) This one goes up to Eleven Tim in Luxembourg City (I'm the bloke who took a cassette of Buick with me to Budapest and heard Budapset by Blimp on the Liberation Bridge (also called the chain bridge) in a snowstorm in front of the Hotel Gellert where I was staying for two days………. To close: 12) How many people are subscribers to this list and from which countries - does Robin Thurlow have the stats - because it would be interesting once again - to see the spatial distribution of the Church of Dolby and to see where St Thomas is reveared the most. Ok that’s enough - break it up - break it up !! Finally - I came here the hard way - via the Flat earth Web site and a link to ANDY J who had a listing / analysis of TMDR tracks. He was very kind and helpful - and put me in touch with you at Alloy. Many thanks to Andy J. So I'm a Brit living in Luxembourg and this is my first posting to Alloy. Sorry its so verbose. How can I get a copy of the TMDR birthday tribute recordings? OK I really must stop - I could go on for hours !! I didn't even notice that when glancing at this before. Er, slight mistake? "Thomas Anderson" was the name of Keanu Reeves' character in the Matrix. Yes. I love it!!!! My favorite portrait of him from his earlier recording days is without hair, except for the one square inch of it that's two feet long, on the A&H cover. I love seeing him au natural now. The confusing thing about the single is that it is not labelled as a "Thomas Dolby" single; it just says "Low Noise" on the cover (came out on Happy Birthday records). It may have emerged elsewhere on a 12" or CD single; I'm not sure. But you might try Yesterday and Today records - that's where I got my copy of the Low Noise 7", and it was only about 5 years ago (he had at least two mint copies at the time). Ask for Skip - he knows the Dolby stuff pretty well! (some of my best > Jokes are friends) I don't think I've ever heard one, though there were some pretty spectacular spoof lyrics made to many of his songs here at Alloy a couple of years back. They're in our archives, which I'm going through right now to find our previous Song Interpretations. When I get to the lyrics shall I re-post them? > 7) TMDR with Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club on UK > TV's The Old Grey Whistle Test - anyone else remember > it ? I know that when I first laid eyes on this photo a couple of years ago, I thought Thomas looked so wonderfully angst-filled, very different from the later pop image he presented in the states. I loved the contrast & of course, I had to spontaneously beg him to be my valentine!! (in amongst the usual slew of marriage proposals of course :) Another thing I like about this photo is he's wearing a silver band on his ring finger, which might have been of special signifigance to him. :: 10) Is this OK for my first posting ? Is this the sort of thing you want or expect at Alloy ? Yes, and it's very nice to hear from you - please post again soon, and tell us how you first came across Mr Dolby's work! :: To close: 12) How many people are subscribers to this > list and from which countries - does Robin Thurlow > have the stats - because it would be interesting once > again - to see the spatial distribution of the Church > of Dolby and to see where St Thomas is reveared the > most. You can see who's on the list by sending an email to majordomo@smoe.org and writing in the body of the letter: who alloy who alloy-digest and leave the subject line blank. After only a few minutes you'll receive a list of everyone who's here by email address. There are usually around 90 people subscribed to Alloy at any given time. I don't have stats for the majority of our subscribers... I'd say about 85% of our total number simply "lurk", and are never normally heard from. Most of the people who post here are from Britain, Australia or the US. Though as Alloy's manager, I'm fortunate enough to hear from other fans all over the world too who have inquiries, and some of the most beautiful letters of devotion about Mr Dolby's work have come from fans in various Spanish-speaking nations. I'm afraid that people from non-English speaking places might not feel confident enough in their English skills to want to post, and it's a great loss to us all. English grammar doesn't have to be perfect, everyone's thoughts on Thomas' work are all very welcome here! :: How can I get a copy of the TMDR birthday tribute > recordings? I'm about to post information here on how to get in touch with the Alloy spin-off Birthday list, where special projects can be arranged in secret (so as not to let Thomas in on the surprise!) According to the original rules set by the project managers, you'd have had to contribute something to the project in order to get a copy. I hope this helps with at least some of the questions you had.. others with more knowledge might possibly fill you in on the rest. xxx Robin T __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
