She was just terrible. The busboy served us everything and came by with drink refills, etc. When we paid the bill, we put the bill on a credit card and gathered cash to tip the busboy instead of the waitress. When the waitress picked up our credit card slip, she stood there and looked at it, and then brashly said to us, "Ummm, in America it is customary to tip the waitress 15 to 20 % you know." As if! The restaurant itself was kind of neat as themed places go. Too bad I didn't know at the time of the Dolby connection because I'm sure not going back! :) :) OT: I'm going to see The Fixx next week! That was when Cy still performed barefoot and hadn't started making hats yet. It's really great to know you're all out there going strong! Slarvi, your stories really made me laugh. Please let us know when your Michelle-isms are compiled. I love this woman, and I've never even met her. And I'm so pleased you're not banging your head anymore when you cough! I'm not banging mine, but I'm talking like Kiefer Sutherland's character in Dark City which is even more disturbing. Barbara, seeing the Fixx is going to be fun. Melissa has been giving us the run-down on some of the shows she's been to lately, and I'd love it if you could fill us in on how this one goes too. I hardly get out now that we're not in Boston & hearing shows reviewed by people with good taste, like those here @ Alloy, is almost as good as attending! Anyway, thanks so very much for all of your sweet get-well wishes. I must say I don't recommend pneumonia to anyone. It's so horribly boring, and takes forever to clear up. I only hope I'll still be able to wear my Halloween costume (which has a corset) on the 31st, but I'm not counting on it. This is also my costume for the Alloy calendar, BTW, which in its purest form is my version of Caroline 452 in her black dress. For Halloween I'm redoing the corset a tiny bit to have a red silk hourglass design on the front (making me a great big black widow spider! :) Among other differences, instead of Caroline's piano key necklace - which I still need to make - I'll have one made of little fake cocooned bugs from my lovely 'web' - with matching earrings of course. Maybe some Victorian eating utensils on a long chain, if I can scrounge some up (for devouring my husband). But the corset is such an integral piece in the design, I can't very well leave it off. I'll just have to see. I can scarcely breathe as it is, and it's making me a little nervous being this short of breath 24 hours a day. Plus I have to sleep sitting up, like the Elephant Man. ~sigh~ Speaking of the Caroline costume, I'm very happy because, between our Special Collections department and the one at Cornell, I may be able to pose as Caroline beside some old recording equipment like the ones in Thomas' video. How's everyone else coming along with their ideas? xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 16:15:43 -0600 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Alloy: hi from within my house! I'm working on ideas for my picture. I'll have to listen to White City again for ideas. Speaking of which - you know that Robin Hitchcock is credited as the voice of Keith in the song. I recently rented Storefront Hitchcock on DVD and I highly recommend it. I don't think the talking in White City was a script, he really goes on like that. In the video he talks between the songs in a similar way, very funny little stories and such. It is a concert film shot in the front of a store. You can see people walking by on the street outside peaking in as he performs. The sound quality is very good for a live show. Hi Robin and everyone -- boy what a few hectic months I've had. Here's a little of what I've been up to. I wanted to tell you that I'm so sorry to hear about pneumonia (ughh!!) and that I'm working on a calendar picture. I took my girls to Disneyland last weekend, meeting up with the fabulous Melissa Jordan again (who was in Anaheim on business). (As an amusing side note, I had a minor hard time finding the park from Melissa's hotel, since the signs seem to mostly steer you directly from the freeway; making me that rare person who can actually be in Anaheim, California and yet UNABLE TO FIND DISNEYLAND.) We had a great time and I hope the pictures come out. Umm, what else. I went to my high school reunion a couple months ago, which is noteworthy in one sense: I had to travel 3,000 miles to do it. Each way!! Also, Anna turned one on September 24th and we had a big party, we bought a new car (with legal wrangling to boot), Elizabeth's now in preschool twice a week, I'm reading steadily on homeschooling and water supply engineering (a subject I find totally fascinating, although I have no idea why). I even did an excursion to the site of the St. Francis dam collapse. We took a trip to Phoenix, Arizona; and another to Santa Barbara, California. Anna took her first steps on October 8th. And to top it all off, I've agreed again to host Thanksgiving in 4 weeks for my husband's extended family.
