Hi all, I've got a question for everyone. How would you feel if we had a small discussion of Thomas' "rarities", ie those which weren't released on TMDR's solo albums, at least not in the US/UK. I want to be sure there is interest, and that enough people have heard them for us to have a discussion that isn't leaving a significant number of Alloy members out in the cold. Among the songs I'd like to discuss: "Urban Tribal", "Puppet Theatre", "Jungle Line", either on Live Wireless or the studio version (though this is Joni Mitchell's originally, I'd like to talk about Thomas' version, the changes he made, why he chose it etc), "Don't Turn Away" (one of my favorites!)and so on. There are others, but you get the idea. What is the concensus? And as I don't have lyrics printed I would have to ask your special indulgence as I try to figure some of them out! I remember Slarv (I think) mentioning the Live Wireless version of Jungle Line recently - and the visuals of the stage preformance do play a large part in Dolby's interpretation - I'll be sure to grab all previous interpretations of all TMDR songs from the Archives so nothing will be lost. Maybe some people have other thoughts on it which can be added? Please post your thoughts on going ahead with discussiona of the "rarities". Also, thanks everyone for letting me know if you want your name included or not in the FES archive of these song interpretations. So far, everyone has said yes :) Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 12:59:54 -0400 (EDT) From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: interp of rarities (cont'd) Also, maybe some of you who know more than I do about them would be kind enough to assist the project by providing lyrics? I recall hearing that Mary and Stephen contributed "Therapy/Growth" to one of the birthday tapes, for instance, and so may have accurate lyrics on hand they'd be willing to share. Please keep us >up-to-date on things. I'll keep my fingers crossed :) If you're interested, I know that Avaya has a keen ear out for Qwest people. A lot of their people are wanting to stay with the old Lucent rather than split off with the newer company. We're basically taking Lucent's phone technology with us and mixing it in with all the new IP applications like Voice over IP, and networking. You know; all the latest and greatest hot voice and data convergence stuff. At least I think that's what were doing. I still don't know if they're going to keep me or not. We've got some auditors coming in next week who are supposed to decide if they will go with our in-house support department (that's us) or go with the same contract Lucent has with IBM for in-house support. So far things are looking up for us, but we're still on pins and needles. ...but, Beth, that's just our department, 'Help Desk'. All the other departments are hiring like crazy. Slarv wrote, >Poor old Dennis; all this mail and no one has told you what >Galaxy is. It's another brand of chocolate with a subtly >different flavour to Cadbury's choccy. LOL! >The IDEA of them is better than the reality. Somehow I get the impression of eating, well, twigs! Come to think of it, they DO taste worse than twigs, so, you're right! >I haven't actually seen the Mr Bean episode in question, but I'd >be surprised if they WEREN'T Twiglets. They have to be the >ideal visual comedy snack. Well, in the episode, he hosts a New Years party and when he gets out the snacks, he finds to his horror that he's just eaten the second-to-last one. So to make up, he opens his kitchen window, grabs a branch and hacks of a few twigs and dips them in vegemite; preparing one each for each guest. Of course, he keeps the last snack for himself, giving the twigs to his two guests. ...Then he attempts to make up for the empty bottle of wine with some vinegar and sugar! Additional note: Here in America, about the only Cadbury seen around here (at least in quantity) is their chocolate eggs around Easter time. And Robin, my apologies if any of this drives you to madness. My empathy goes out to you... but, boy! That Flake was good! And a minor correction; it was a Velvet Dream bar, not Creme, though it's filled with creme. Melissa wrote, >Tony Slattery! (as her Celeb match up) >Too bizarre. Of course, I was concerned that I was matched up >with a guy just coming off a couple of years of serious >depression (and whom I'm not sure is straight!) But I think he's >adorable. Is he the one that they're always finding some way to prod him with lines like "...who's desparately fighting off those rumors that he's gay?" We catch that show on one of our primary stations, but I forget which one. That show is a total crackup! Its right up there with Third Rock! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 20:39:12 -0400 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: visit this link!! Hi everyone, guess what? Thomas has directed us to a sneak peek @ something you're going to like! Go to http://www.firstcom.com/sup52/default.stm to view the Headspace music collection on CD, which a music library company called FirstCom are setting up for sale!! One of my fondest wishes for a long time has been for the music @ Headspace/Beatnik to be released on CD & I can't even express how thrilled I am that it's really happening. I don't think they're quite ready to accept orders via this page just yet however, as the links to music samples are coming up as 'can't find song to play' in the player, and the order form doesn't seem to be connected with its link *thud* (Robin faints, scattering credit cards all around her on the floor... but then gets a grip when she remembers it's only meant as a sneak preview!) Patience, patience... And... as if this weren't enough... Thomas also tells us that the disk contains an interview which the Firstcom folks have done with him, and in addition, they "included a voiceover that some Alloy members may recall if they were around for the Flat Earth Tour in 1983--it was part of a video intro to my show." The minute anyone sees the ordering information is up... please tell me! patiently yours, xxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V5 #226 ***************************
