Jordan" Subject: Re: Alloy: My 10 cents-worth Jon, it's true the term 'New Romantic' didn't make it into general popular use in the states. As avid music listeners my friends and I tried our best to keep up with what was *really* going on, buying up UK music papers whenever we could (there was a halfway decent imports shop near us) and trying our best to hear these bands by listening to shows such as 'Rock Over London'. In general US audiences are fed such pap by the record industry! It's really sad. Robin T jonathan.chiddick@nokia.com wrote: > Duran Duran were icons of the New Romantic movement. And what a wonderful rant it was! You made me think of one my favorite They Might Be Giants songs, XTC vs Adam Ant ("XTC versus Adam Ant/Content versus form/Beatle-based pop versus New Romantics...") It's very funny. And I think I might actually watch The List with your suggested panel, but only if Lemmy can teach those wise old archeologists all the chords for Ace of Spades and Meatloaf gets Bubbles the Chimp all messed up with periodic shots of pure oxygen from his portable tank. Now, that's what I call good tv! Good to see you out here, Jon! jonathan.chiddick@nokia.com wrote: > Hi all, > I've been very busy of late but feel that I must de-lurk for a momentary > rant. > > Thanks a lot Keith for putting the .RM file up so that I too could see The > List. Jordan" Subject: Alloy: UK Alloy! Anyone in London 11/23-26? I'm being sent off to (Soviet) Georgia in mid-November to arrange and (hopefully) pull off a conference in Tbilisi. Because of the limited number of flights in and out, I will be flying through London both ways (12-hour layover on the way in, 3 days on the way out.) I'm going to find a nice B&B to stay in, and I'll be wandering around town, buying books, skulking through used record stores, and seeing what gigs I might be able to catch. If anyone is going to be anywhere near London, I'd love to meet some of the UK contingent! (Otherwise, I'll be all alone for Turkey Day far from home!) ;-) Cheers, Melissa, absolutely tickled pink... - -- Melissa R. Please write in to let us know what your feelings are for this song, how you translate its meaning personally, etc. This song means *a lot* to me. Tomorrow evening I'll send in my thoughts on this beautiful piece. One note - the introductory section is spoken by Thomas in French as you all know. I thought it most pertinant to write the English translation out for our purposes here. Robin T Valley of the Mind's Eye written by Thomas Dolby & Grant Morris lyrics as printed in The Gate to the Mind's Eye soundtrack, 1994 My dearest Josephine, How the world has changed since last I wrote. So tonight I take up my pen, not to marvel at these wonderous times, but to declare the love that is in my heart. If a song was a road I would ride through the night to you there's a moon on the rise and I'm drawn on the tide to you. And I will be with you and I will stay with you and I will dream with you if you need me to anytime, anywhere in a corner of your mind's eye. Planets will cool, Josie tyrants will rule, Josie I will be here for you oceans divide, Josie stars will collide, Josie nations will rise and fall but never see the world through these eyes Dreams of falling - dreams of flying. A man who never dreams goes slowly mad. The dawn of science, the age of reason. This is the voyage of the mind's eye. And I will be with you I will stay with you and I will dream with you if you need me to anytime, anywhere in a corner of your mind's eye in a corner of your mind's eye ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V5 #193 ***************************
