I was impressed by how faithfully they reproduced their hits ending with "The Reflex" which stands as one of their biggest fan favorites but I still can't figure out the lyrics to the song! I saw them in 1983 in their heyday so it was intriguing to watch them again but as Denise put it when halfway through the first song hordes of screaming thirtysomething women mobbed us going up to the stage "I now fully realize I am not a teenager anymore!" To quote Thomas, we had to see them "out of sheer jealousy!" Two of my best friends were die-hard Duran Duran fans (one loved John, the other loved Simon - so the one who loved John of course had to make relentless fun of the one who loved Simon) The going interpretation of the song in my group of friends at the time was that "The Reflex" was really just Simon singing about his own genitalia. It made an odd sort of sense: "'The reflex' is an only child, he's waiting in the park The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark and watching over lucky clover, isn't that bizarre Every little thing 'the reflex' does leaves me answered with a question mark" This take changed my whole perception of that album, that's for sure. Speaking of song interpretations! I just came back from a rather tasty Chinese lunch with the lovely and talented Beth Meyer, who's in DC for a conference. It's such a rare opportunity to have Alloy friends just a few blocks from my office! (And such a refreshing treat to spend some time with a delightful person on an otherwise miserable - read: typical hot, humid, and hazy - DC summer day!) After that Hunan chicken, though, I need a nap... zzzzzz... I'm seeing Duran Duran tonight up in Baltimore. ($10 lawn seats.) Considering Our Fearless Leader's dis of the pretty boys on VH-1, I hope he won't think less of me for taking this traiterous action! :-) Cheers, y'all, Melissa ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2000 13:24:17 -0600 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Alloy: New Wave Damn I always thought it was "answered with a question more." You could try hard to interpret Duran Duran's lyrics, but in the end, they just don't make a lot of sense. I think the words are chosen mostly for rhythm and rhyme with a general topic. I guess that changed a little when they added the guy from Extreme (can't remember his name). Their lyrics made a bit more sense then. The other day I was listening to Beck's Odelay CD - same kind of the same thing going there - the words make very little sense. Although TMDR's lyrics are sometimes hard to figure out, you always get a sense there is a real meaning behind them that perhaps you just haven't worked out yet. - -Keith - -----Original Message----- From: Robin Thurlow To: alloy@smoe.org Date: Friday, August 04, 2000 12:54 PM Subject: Re: Alloy: New Wave Damn > >Ah yes, "The Reflex"... this brings back memories from high school.
