It hadn't occured to me to do so in context of 'new wave' because I've been listening to them practically every day of my life since the first time I heard them, so they're a continuous fixture for me. And Siouxie and Budgie are still going strong... not to mention Siouxie's occasional runway modelling gigs! Robin T Elaine Linstruth wrote: > Absolutely agreed, Slarv. Thomas' mention of the Furs really surprised me as I had no idea that he liked the band at all. I just saw them in concert 3 weeks ago and they still sound as sharp as ever even though Richard Butler and his brother are the only remaining original members. We spoke to Richard after the show as he was quite friendly and genuinely concerned about the sound quality as his mixer was just working his third gig. When I think of the term "New Wave" in its' context to me one band always springs into my head-Blondie. They may have gotten started late into the New Wave movement(The Police did too) but they seemed to personify alot of the characteristics of the trend all rolled together. Thomas was very gracious in his removal of Duran Duran "out of sheer jealously" and I was certainly biased towards his choices to begin with. I'm not sure the Pet Shop Boys deserved to be mentioned as they arrived fairly late into the decade. No one mentioned Adam And The Ants who were definitely an early MTV favorite or my personal favorite Ultravox who could never seem to find an audience here in the U.S. I can't believe that one panelist who wrote off Bow Wow Wow as one hit wonders as they were another MTV fave with videos for "W.O.R.K." and "Do You Wanna Hold Me" in addition to "I Want Candy". I enjoyed seeing Thomas discussing music again and hopefully someday we'll see him recording it once more as well. Love those '80's! I've just bought their latest masterpiece, 'Pop Trash' and I think it's great. A stunning juxtaposition of their varying styles through the decades...wonderful!! if you like new wave or 'New Romantics' as they are better known, they are simply top...and get better with age..... Which > Duran/Dolby song was it you are talking about? This was not in reference to stealing a song, but rather a concept for a video. When "The Flat Earth" came out, TMDR made a video for "Dissidents" which featured a group of underground writers printing and distributing flyers in a totalitarian, Eastern-Block-ish state. Not too long afterwords, Duran Duran released a video for "New Moon On Monday", a song from their latest album, which featured--you guessed it-- the band publishing and distributing flyers in a totalitarian state (although a much more colorful one than TMDR's, since this *is* Duran Duran after all.) Since both videos were produced by EMI's video division, it has been suggested that whoever produced the Duran Duran video might have been "inspired" by Thomas' effort. So perhaps it's not the band's fault per se that their video looks so much like TMDR's, but I can't really blame Thomas if he still feels a bit down on them all the same (aside from the fact that they got all the girls, as he mentioned. :) ) BC ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V5 #185 ***************************
