Since there are two votes in favor of posting the lyrics, and no objections, I'll be very happy to post them from now on. The exact layout they'll use for the interpretations at the FES site is still being developed (though I'm happy to say that yes, Thomas and everyone at the design company do wish to go ahead with the idea of developing these interpretations into a permanent part of the FES!) and they will put the interpretations into appropriate context with the rest of the page, but at least for our own use here, each song's lyrics will be posted for reference. I'll type out 'Urges' tonight so that those of you who still wish to contribute your commentary on the song can do so over the weekend. Also, since it seems a lot of people are going out of town at this time of year, I thought I would post a new song every two weeks instead of weekly, so that people can have a bit more time. A new one will come up for discussion on Monday the 3rd. Which one should I choose?? Would anyone care for more of an in-depth discussion of their personal take on 'Cloudburst at Shingle Street' - which has been stubbornly going through my head for the past two days (not that I mind of course - it's another of my very favorites :) Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jun 2000 19:54:18 -0400 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: 'Urges' lyrics Urges recorded February 1980 lyrics as printed in Retrospectacle Early evening he get these urges Skin tension under leatherette A back bar somewhere in clubland Cigarello and the scene is set See the bodies - now things are moving Little twitches people can't explain Young bodies, listen to them talking New languagism in their veins Same face in a new situation The mirrorball holds mesmerised - He looks around, he's the new Clark Gable... Urges, urges - he get these urges he don't want to talk about - Heartfelt urges - he get these urges He's not supposed to talk about Urges, urges - these restless urges He don't want to talk about Urges, urges - can't stop the urges Lock them out. She's here, the heat is rising He move slowly she's a china doll By degrees, he'll loosen her composure - She knows he knows she knows he knows. One word to the man in the pulpit She start twitching and she can't sit still Seven inches of a black star liner... Try to contain the stuff that's in your body Bit silly when you're head's no good When you're ashamed of things about your body You keep drinking like you knew you would. In the footlight the ape in motion Spins circles all across the floor - Mouth the words, assume the positions For a second you can fool them all Girl this time it's a new sensation It's never been this way before. I look at you and I feel half human... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jun 2000 20:20:51 -0400 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Re: Alloy: 'Urges' lyrics Excuse me, that's 'cigarillo', not 'cigarello'...
