As a radio show host I listen to the music that the artist sends to me... If they say it is folk, well that is good enough for me. Then it is up to my tastes from there. If I don't dig it...I don't play it. Simple enough. I try to make it accessible. Folk is really the hardes genre to define and put people into...it is the hub of so many cross overs... I call my music folk really in hopes that I can tour that circuit. If someone buys it as that...well...all the better for me right?? >I will say though, "Rebel by Nature" had a very smooth mix of style --if >I may opiniate(?) progressive folk. I can just see myself as a bandleader now.... "ok cats...lets start with a one-four-five in 4/4 and take it to the four-five-2minor-one in 37/8 waddaya think???" I am actually going to try my hand at the anarchistic sort of folk....telling stories of rebellion and adversity etc. It can make for a fun show.... I want to get people fired up...put alot of energy into it. I have been told I should stick to the PC stuff...but i will leave that to the bleeding hearts... I still can't bring myself to write an "Oh I loves ya Baby" kinda tune. So Thanks sir... and i will keep the sax in mind when doing my recording this summer. cheers, Ian >- ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- >From: "Ian Gifford" >Reply-To: alloy@smoe.org >Date: Tue, 06 Jun 2000 12:47:35 EDT > > > > >Hello Alloyites > > > >I am sorry to pst this yet again....but...... > > > >I have FINALLY completed my web-site. I still twitch when I listen to the Chess soundtrack! Too bad, it's my favourite musical (London cast recording, please). On the subject of songs stuck in your head ... I've been told that a sure fire way of getting a pesky song out of your head is to sing "Amazing Grace" to the tune of the "Gilligan's Island" theme song. - - Colin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2000 12:07:44 EDT From: MsSakamoto@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Fwd: dolby songs In a message dated 6/9/00 10:58:02 AM Eastern Daylight Time, colin@easyDNS.com writes: > Too bad, it's my favourite musical (London cast recording, please). Oh, I can listen to it, just not that song. The London one is the one sans Murray Head, or is it the other way around? I've got whichever one doesn't have him on it. My favourite song in it is "I Know Him So Well"...but that probably stems from being a girl, and occasionally feeling like Svetlana, letting go of someone because you care about them so much and you just want them to be happy. Here is an interesting piece from an interview with Walter Becker of Steely Dan: http://www.steelydan.com/blindfold.html in which he gives his interpretation of Airwaves! It seems to be going around. Bizarre, eh? Robin T :) :: (10) THOMAS DOLBY. Airwaves (from Blinded By Science, Harvest/EMI). Keyboards, programming, vocal, Dolby; electric guitar, Kevin Armstrong; bass, Mark Hayward-Chaplin; drums, Justin Hidreth; background vocals, Bruce Wooley. 1982. WB: Well, that's of course Thomas Dolby's first album. Great songwriter, great producer. That particular tune had a powerful ambiance that reminded me of those apocalyptic "Heavy Metal"cartoons where you're wandering despairingly amidst the ruins. The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway after the collapse of the social structure or something. That particular tune didn't have as perky a beat as some of the others. That album had so many great songs on it, I'd give that one four stars. I actually had it in my car this week and was listening to it again. Maybe I'd give it four and a half. Just to get on Thomas' good side, should he ever stumble into this piece. :: ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V5 #144 ***************************
