[CJMark@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 8 May 2000 02:45:52 -0400 From: "Stephen M. Tilson" Subject: Alloy: Song of the Week: New Toy Dear Alloy, As no one has come forward to offer us their analysis of New Toy, I offer you the viewpoint from Europa (and /\/\iles). At the time the song was written Thomas was touring with Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club (you all know what a Camera Club is, yes?) as the opening act for Lene Lovich's 1980 tour. (Later, he was to tour as keyboardist (one of two) for Lene in her subsequent tour.) So Thomas had some time to observe Lene, on stage at least. Very likely, New Toy is partly based on those observations, and conceived as being appropriate for her stage persona. As far as the lyrics themselves... New Toy is about a headstrong and self-absorbed female who only wants someone for what they can give her, and doesn't like to work for what she can get. She doesn't like environments which lead to complacency, and she doesn't like people or things which place demands on her. This is a satire of shallow behavior, a goof on self-centered people who won't take the time to work at things to find enjoyment. This is also a send-up of people who are easily bored, and their endless search for the next thing - people who search for completion in the material world and not the spiritual. YMMV, Europa and /\/\iles PS Here are the lyrics again for convenience (from the Lene single) *********************************************************** NEW TOY -- circa 1980 Did I ask you for your love Did I ask you for your dedication I don't want I don't want your love I don't want I don't want your affection But I've got to have the car (I need it for the weekend) I've got to have the stereo (And a couple of deletions) I've got to have the freezer (Put some fun back in my eating) I've got to have it all 'til I'm complete I want a New Toy To keep my head expanding I want a New Toy Nothing too demanding Then when everything is in roses Everything is static Me and my new toy... You'll find us in the attic You Sometimes you make me feel I feel so insecure Sometimes you make me feel Nothing at all I'm sick of the TV (Well, look at the news) I'm sick of the radio (Well, what can you do) I'm sick of the Hoover (My mind's a vacuum) I'm sick of it all So what can I do I get a New Toy To keep my head expanding I get a New Toy Nothing too demanding Then when everything is in roses You don't get any headroom Me and my new toy You'll find us in the bedroom You You must You must want What do you want You You must You must want What do you want You must You must want What do you want New Toy New Toy Oh-eee-oh *********************************************************** PPS Next "week" - "Airwaves" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 May 2000 10:32:40 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Alloy: Thomas in the News!
