Jordan" Subject: WAY OT - Re: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V5 #91 Kate, I'm sorry, but I'm there every day. This is four blocks from where I spend 10 hours of my day. My best friend is working directly in the middle of this. I was at the Bank twice yesterday. There are people *everywhere* with camcorders and cameras. ANYONE who wants to is taping this, covering this, credentials or not - my friend was commenting that tons of tourists have been coming through, filming, snapping away. Many of the protesters are covering it themselves - hell, I saw this chick standing in the middle of traffic, blissfully unaware (or uncaring) that she was risking her life and screwing with tons of other people, shooting footage of her buds chanting in a park. All the local press here got credentials, but there was a limited number. And I've been listening to the coverage on my local NPR station, so how could they be "banned" from covering it? I don't have to believe what the press is saying because I'm seeing it firsthand. My best and most trusted friend is calling me every couple of hours to report what's going on outside his window. I will be going past myself in about half an hour because I have to go to work this weekend. What I have seen to date on the news has been accurate. Peaceful demonstrations, PETA dumping manure at the Bank yesterday, and a handful of protesters arrested to date - including three last night that had all the makings of molotov cocktails. I don't like seeing all the police downtown, and hope there's no need for it come tomorrow and Monday, but I also hope that there aren't any more molotov-carting losers among the peaceful protesters. And, no, in response to what Ian wrote, I don't think the vandalism in Seattle was done by hired hands of the government. People can be stupid all on their own. All it takes is a football victory to set some cities alight. There are people who live for those moments. A small handful of fools can taint an entire group. If the anarchist element comes to town here and decides to kick in some store fronts and toss some flaming bottles, I pity them for their foolishness. There are several small immigrant-family-owned businesses right down across from the World Bank and the IMF. Think about those families if someone decides to break their windows - most insurance doesn't cover civil unrest or protests. I'm not a political animal, and I don't enjoy political debate, but I really felt I had to comment here. I apologize to the Alloy folks for this being so very OT. I'd be happy to continue the discussion outside of Alloy, if you'd like. Off to work, Melissa - uncharacteristically serious for once "Kathleen T. At the thrift store I found a really cool LP by "The Brothers In Law". Alas though, it wasn't "The Pill". Now if only I had a record player. Also found the movie Gothic at Walmart for $4 in the big bin o' forgotten movies of yore.
