Melissa, what has happened at World Bank? I've had my head in the books a little too much lately & I've missed out on the news! I'm happy you're getting a chance to visit with your mom. It's heartbreaking to hear that her memories have faded, but the kindness of your visiting her will not be lost on her. I'll be thinking of you and your family.. please take care & know that you have lots of love and support here with your friends at Alloy. xx Robin T "Melissa R. Jordan" Subject: Alloy: World Bank... Robin asked (hi, Robin!) what was up with the World Bank and the razor wire and the cops... well, the World Bank Group (World Bank, IBRD, IMF, etc.) is holding its annual meetings over the weekend and on Monday here in Washington. The same protesters who trashed Seattle are headed here to try to disrupt the meetings and shut the World Bank down on Monday. I've never seen so many police officers in one place before - DC cops freak me out because I've had a bad experience with them in the past, so I'm spooked picking up my friend at the Bank with 25 cops watching me from behind a barricade. The protesters say their demonstrations are going to be peaceful, but, considering that they said the same thing in Seattle, who knows? I'm staying at home on Monday, and then flying out to Chicago. My friend has already been given the day off work. If you'd like to know about the protests, visit the site: http://www.a16.org Pennsylvania Avenue is overloaded with tie-dye, bandanas, Birkenstocks, and acoustic guitars this week. It reminds me a whole lot of my little lefty liberal arts education at Macalester, up in Minnesota. :-) I agree with a lot of what the protesters have to say about the World Bank, having spent some time in the crunchy granola sector myself. I get pretty disgusted when I pass by a reception for third world top feeder fat cats, the cost of which could feed several African villages for a year... (oops, off my soapbox!) I just hope these folks keep things mellow downtown... Cheers, Melissa "I thought that if you had an acoustic guitar/ It meant that you were a protest singer/ Well I can smile about it now/ But at the time it was terrible" - The Smiths - -- Melissa R.
