Crackers, you have just dated yourself! Atari ST! 1040 or 520? I used one for years and yes it was very reliable. Are you using the Hybrid Arts software or what? I ran the Hybrid Arts SMPTE Track with the quad MIDI box on a 520, 1040 and Mega 2 (2 MB RAM!!! WOW! - with all my 720K floppies!) and a 30 MB external hard drive - - about $800.00 if I remember right! Glad to hear that someone is still using one. I've got a friend with a 1040 and was thinking about grabbing it cheap if he'll sell it. What are you using for MIDI software on your Pentium? I am looking to gear up again but need to get some info on what's hot, what's not. Thanks, Damien Damien J. Pardon the intrusion, but I recently picked up a piece of software for both midi and digital audio recording that seems to be very remarkable in both performance and price. It's called Data Becker Music Center. I bought it at Staples/Business Depot for $49 (Cdn). It has 32 midi tracks and 16 digital audio tracks. So far it has worked extremely well. The website is at http://www.databecker.com I have been burned on similar software costing 4 times as much, so I wasn't really expecting a lot, but this package works very well. They also produce more "high end" products, but 16 tracks of audio is more than enough for me. It's a giant step up from my Tascam 4-track. Just thought I'd pass along the info. dg - -- Doug Grose - The Crayons Multimedia / Web Design thecrayons@home.com http://thecrayons.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 15:59:44 -0500 From: Doug Grose Subject: Re: Alloy: RE: Atari ST's and Midi gear Doug Grose wrote: > It's called Data Becker Music Center. I hear Science used on lots of shows, but the instrumental later on was kind of cool. I watch this show sometimes and I haven't noticed if they have done that with other songs. The guy who created this show, Chuck Lore, seems like an interesting guy. At the end of each show, he puts up a VCR screen. It's a page of his writing that only flashes for a second, so you have to record it and freeze frame to read it. I'm sort of surprised at some of the stuff that goes on this, one time he basically called beer makers drug dealers. I wouldn't expect a network to allow an attack on one of their big sponsors like that. I don't usually watch it, but the other night I'd been watching the Millionaire show and left the room for awhile. When I returned the sitcom was playing SBMWS. Later in the show the Greg character was walking down a lonely sidewalk and there was a melancholy Blinded piano version playing in the background. I liked it a lot, actually. I don't watch this show but I can tell you the general gist of the episode: apparently the guy is straight-laced and plans out his and her 'bedroom' events in advance, and she found out & didn't tell him she knew. He wondered why she was so willing to go along with everything he wanted, and his doofusy friends convinced him she was acting out of guilt cause she must be cheating on him. (?) At the risk of offending anyone who might be a fan of the show, it was incredibly stupid. Anyway, I don't know why they chose SBMWS but I appreciated it nonetheless. :-) I'll let you know if I notice the episode rerunning... and I'll try to run a tape if I can. What I wondered was whether Thomas gets to see any royalty ch-ching from it. - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 20:21:16 EST From: CJMark@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: RE: Atari ST's and Midi gear Hey Crackers.. I also have an Atari ST 1040 that I use every so often.. however.. your comments are interesting since I just bought a new Mega PC system with which I was hoping to start doing some more serious work. I use the Notator software.. which I purchased together with the Atari in Italy in about 1986 or so. Still works great though. Any thoughts on software for midi work on the PC? I just tried that audio CD I made from my Debbie Harry album in my stereo and it would randomly sputter and skip. It plays back just fine in both my CD-ROM drive and my CD-RW drive. I haven't tried it on my other stereo yet to see how it does there. (my other stereo has a horribly unreliable CD player in it). The surface of the CD-R looks pretty clean. There's a wee, tiny little mark that's very faint but no where near as bad as the scratches on some audio CDs I've been able to play on my stereo without problems. Are some brands of CD-R better than others for making audio CDs? I'm using Memorex CD-Rs. I've always been pleased with the quality of their cassette tapes so I just figured their CD-Rs would be equally as good. Maybe not. It is true that some blank CDs are better than others, and some blank CDs work better than others in particular burners. That may not be the problem here, but let's try a test to see. Get a blank Maxell CD and a blank TDK CD and record the same program. (Hey, you love Koo Koo, might as well have a copy or two!) Then try each one in the problematic playback unit to see if there is a difference between the three. If there is no or little difference then we get into a whole ream of technical issues revolving around the burner itself and the software you're using to create the CD. The fact is, no CD burner generally available to us, the little guys, is fully "Red Book" compliant. "Red Book" is the CD-audio standard. (There's White Book and Green Book, too. They are data formats.) However some burner/software bundles are more Red Book compliant than others. You are using a PC. For PC, I've had the best luck with HP burners and Adaptec software. What are you using? Persistence *will* pay off!
