On some servers my page looks as I designed it, but on others it has all kinds of big blocky white outlines which shouldn't be there... some of the colors are different, and it looks almost like a little Mondrian-esque sketch is stuck in one of the margins, when I didn't put it there at all (nor should the margin even be there. Why should there be borders, for instance, when I designed it with none? It's very strange!!!!! I've used Dreamweaver to make my page, so anyone with any kind of insight on this who could help me out I'd be greatly appreciative. Having dabble with enough web pages, your question is legitimate but presents a heck of a dilemma. Most webmasters are faced with this kind of problem every day. I can't give you a specific answer since I would have to see the web page. But that is exactly the crux of the matter. Seeing the web page is a matter of how the particular browsers interpret the HTML. Internet Explorer and Netscape recognize certan values that each other don't. So when designing a web page, it is imperative that you check it out under both browsers. You will undoubtly recognize some differences in the browser. The thing to do is to buy an HTML book that identifies what tags work best or do not work well under a particular browser. That's the easy part. The other design variable is the type of web development software you use. I have worked with Cold Fusion, Frontpage and Netscape Composer. Each one generate an HTML tag that the browsers may not take kindly. If you manually insert a generic tag, you have a better success of getting it consistent across browsers. This is where I laugh at the advertisements of software.. "the quick and easy method to developing web page." The fact is, it is valuable to learn generic HTML language so that you can go in the generated code and tweak it. Also, different VERSIONS of HTML may react differently in certain VERSIONS of Browsers. As you can see, this present a daunting correction adjustment. Always work with the latest protocol of HTML... I think we are up to HTML 4.X and the latest version of any browser. Then forsake the older versions since it may or may not work, but then again sooner or later the viewer has to upgrade. The last advice is colors. Again, we get different inerpretation according to browsers. There is a book by Lynda Weinman called "Coloring Web Graphics." In this book this lady identifies the colors that display properly on web browsers. Unfortunately, there are more color codes that exist than the browsers are able to interpret. Also, if the monitor is set to certain pixels let's say 800 x 600 or 1024 X 768 at 16 bit color , or True Color (32 bit) you will run into differences there also. However, Lynda has meticulously worked out a great way to get the color you intend to display properly on any screen. There is no easy explanation to this. She has the best solution of that scenario that I have read. It is hassle free since it also coordinates the color wheel that works best on the eye. It is worth the investment is one is into web design. Or just go to you nearest book store and peruse the book. You will see what I mean. As for the Server... most times is not a server problem but a software and coding problem. I usually get a free subscription called "WEBMONKEY The Web Developers Resource." It s a great source of information... you can find the site at: http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/index.html I hope this help.. even though it a generic answer. electrix ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000 00:03:08 -0600 From: Lee Jackson Subject: Re: Alloy: Hmmmm..
