My dear fellow alloids.. I must say there is more continuous streaming music out there than meet the ears. This site keeps increasing in popularity and it is indeed the FM broadcast of the millenium. Any genre of music can be found. They all stream MP3 without a glitch (thank God we don't have to put up with UnRealAudio streaming). Full length albums are played from known and unknown artist by enthusiastic and hobyist DJs. To make matters interesting... anyone can setup a computer "station" that can broadcast in this media. So, one look at the SHOUTcast roster will tell you that there are literally TONS of DJ spots on this site. Bands can actually broadcast their own MP3's 24 hour a day. and if the individual is really ambitious can setup a dedicated Server from home to broadcast not only the band's music but other bands. One click on the band or artist link easily take you to their site to learn more about the artist or band. There is not enough time in the day to listen to all these materials. What we got here is seething musical evolution taking place where the sharing and streaming of music can get to everyone's ear uncensored by the Record Industry moguls. It is an emancipation of sound I have never witness in my living years. The release of new low cost music-making software is also opening incredible potentials even though it is still in its infancy. I was able to write my first Techno Trance - Trip hop within an hour. Presently working my way thru a Techno/Latin/World Beat tune and anticipating having tons of electronic Techno/Jazz in my music catalog. I am able to plug in my electric/synth guitar DIRECTLY into my laptop and laydown guitar tracks over studio quality sampled drum beats. In fact, able to make my own sampled guitar playing for use with my sequencer software. I played my material to a few and they couldn't believe it. One person thought it was the radio playing! Now figure this.. all of this with JUST A LAPTOP environment!!! No extraneous expensive studio hardware, "tubes and wires" or MIDI!! I am just walking around with a Laptop recording, tweaking sound & beats, mixing and playing back the music. Desktop music! Some of the studio software are now incorporating video file capability to sync with the music. Put the ease of making music and broadcasting on the net and we get a whole new artistic condition to reckon with. Thirty years ago I couldn't possibly fathom this musical evolution. We are indeed living in the future. I can't even begin to envision what this new technology is going to trigger in the next thirty! I am already overwhelmed with the potential of what I can do today. I sure want to be around to check out the next wave. Music lovers beware. electrix TOTALLY HIGH ON MUSIC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 01:59:44 -0800 (PST) From: Brian Clayton Subject: Re: Alloy: TOTALLY HIGH On Wed, 8 Mar 2000, electrix wrote: > I recently took time out to explore http://www.shoutcast.com. Heh, it's been a couple of years since Shoutcast debuted...I set up one of the first servers and had the #1 shoutcast off and on for a couple of weeks (like, 20 listeners!) These days a friend of mine shoutcasts (or icecasts: same mp3 streaming, but under unix) a public radio station or two, helping to get that alternative programming into people's ears. It's really an amazing thing! BC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 06:03:10 -0500 From: "Stephen M. (Jane? ) /\/\ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Mar 2000 09:30:38 -0500 From: "Melissa R. Jordan" Subject: Alloy: Overwhelming Dear Alloy Friends, I just returned from several difficult days in the Midwest, sitting at my mother's hospital bedside, hoping that she would grow strong enough to get off the ventilator that has been keeping her breathing since she underwent emergency open heart surgery last Thursday. It was very tough to leave her, still not breathing on her own, unable to communicate other than through Morse Code and in so much pain and agitation that the nurses had to tie her hands down to keep her from pulling out her tubes. I have a delegation in country, and I had to fly back to run their program evaluation session Thursday, before they return to Russia and points East on Friday. However, through a cell phone call to me at the airport in Chicago, I found out that the Department of Commerce has decided to not extend my current contract, which ends on Friday afternoon, and someone forgot to file the paperwork for a new contract. They have known this since last Wednesday. So, as of Friday, I am unemployed for at least a month, which is going to make paying the rent very difficult. I'm furious that they didn't tell me this before I drove the 3 hours to Chicago yesterday to catch my plane. One of my co-workers told me that this was intentional. They figured that, if I knew I wouldn't have a job next week, I wouldn't have flown back for the evaluation session. They were right, of course, but there are three other people who could have handled this session other than me. Now, I am needlessly 1, 000 miles away from Mom again, I will have no job on Monday morning, and I have to figure out how to scrape together enough money to fly back to Illinois. It makes me sick. I'm running on no sleep now and I am still recovering from pneumonia, but I have to go back into the office now and face the people who have treated me so badly. I'm so angry I think I can feel my blood boiling. In the midst of this, I opened my inbox this morning, for the first time in a week, to find 140 messages waiting for me - most of them Alloy posts. What a welcome distraction from the ills of the day. The chatter on Alloy is one of the few normal things I've encountered in many days. :-) So, whether you knew it or not, you were giving me a nice dose of therapy, and I'm grateful. With my best wishes to you all for health and happiness, Melissa - -- Melissa R. I hope you do get the chance, somehow, to get back to your mom. You and she *both* need you to be there. Is there some way of getting recompense for the completely thoughtless and unprofessional way your contract was handled? Nowhere to put on in my house and they require too much upkeep. I'd just buy a digital piano, not sure of which model because I haven't looked in a keyboard magazine in years. It was bad enough when it was "If you don't have the latest Gizmotronic KX-2000a then you're crap" but now it's also "If you don't have the latest Gizmotronix KX-2000a AND this 1975 Analogasmic Vintage Synth you're crap". Yepper, I'm much happier with my accordion. Now if we're talking fantasy world where I can not only afford to buy any grand piano but also have a big luxurious house to keep it in... Well... I'd probably buy one of those Yamaha fully midi automatic grand pianos. That would be neat. They employ you and ship you off to dangerous ex-eastern bloc countries where your skills are probably in very short supply, then they mess you about and treat you in a way that no employer should. You should sue their ass off, but you'd probably be wasting your time. If I remember correctly, your last employer didn't treat you much better. I think it might be time to begin looking for work elsewhere, even if they DO renew your contract in a month. It's not that long ago that Robin was being treated shabbily by her main client, but thank goodness all that's behind her now. Business is a crucial part of society and anyone blatantly abusing their business relationships is seen as a danger to the societal (and therefore spiritual) balance of the group. The justice is exacted psychically using art as its ritual medium - and traditionally believed to be quite effective. All artists in African societies - dancers, musicians, carvers, painters, etc. - are thought to be powerful intermediaries between the world of the living and the world of the spirit, and there is nothing joking about it. It also isn't generally spoken of, but of course, I find myself remembering it now due to the circumstances at hand. Just making conversation of course :) Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V5 #58 **************************
