But it turns out Ofra Haza died of AIDS and that she could have survived longer if she had allowed her condition to be known. The article I read talked about how hush-hush and stigmatized AIDS is in Israel and how there's this huge controversy over whether she should have done her part for AIDS awareness by being a sort of Magic johnson in Israel. it's all incredibly sad...I remember going to the prince of egypt with my mom and making her stay through the credits because I wanted to see if I was right about Ofra Haza singing Moses' mom, and of course it was her--no one else had a vibrato like that! monya - -- ****************************************************************** Monya De "I can't think of anything nicer PO Box 13503 than to be an adjective." But I certainly envy those who have that one primary focus and drive in their lives. I always want to do too many things & no matter what I do, though I love it, I feel like it isn't quite enough. I'm only just coming to grips with the fact (at age 31!) that my time is actually *not* infinite, & that there are some things I won't ever be able to do/learn, even though I really want to. It's very true that every time a person makes any kind of choice, they're also simultaneously making a sacrifice. Robin T going off to find dinner now ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2000 19:13:04 -0800 (PST) From: Elaine Linstruth Subject: Alloy: Hello... Hi folks, I just went through 75 messages from you all! It's so nice. Even though I wait too long to log in, and they pile up, it's nice to have email. I'm not sure to whom I owe responses, but here are some that are sticking in my mind at the current time. Patrick Stewart is a sexy man. Sexier bald than when he had the romanesque bit of hair crowned around his head edges, actually, but that might have been the Capt. Picard character being a bit wimpier in the earlier seasons of the show. Actor/man/character, as far as sexiness they were one & the same. I also have an autographed picture of GG Liddy, but that's another story. Lasik: I'd do it tomorrow if I had the money. Its predecessor, or one of them at least, R.K. (radial keratotomy), I wouldn't have had done if someone gave me a million dollars, but lasik is quite benign. Not only that, but as those of you know with less-than-stellar vision (myself in the -7 and -8 range too), the quality of life is SO much improved. R.K. left horror stories, but I haven't heard much about lasik. Another good thing is that lasik has been being performed in Europe for nearly 50 years. Contrary to popular myth, there are (at least that) long-term studies. Julie, if you can afford it, do it, especially if you trust your doctors a lot. If not, search out good ones. I don't think you'll regret it. Monya are you sure about Ofra? Not to suggest that Aguilera or Spears are great artists, but I think I saw someone trying to say that you can't be a good artist unless you write your own material. I say that's nonsense, and point to Tom Jones, a whole flood of fantastic studio musicians from the 1950's on up, Tony Bennett, an equally large flood of country musicians and singers, Frank Sinatra, and more if I had some more time to think of them. Alternately, there are those who write their own lackluster material and either sing badly, and/or their songs are boring. Hint: having vibrato doesn't automatically make you a singer. Robin's job and studies sound neater & neater every time she talks about it! Anna's 3-month baby pictures are at: http://www.qnet.com/~elaine/anna/ I took the first portraits of them together last week and will scan those too, after the 10th when I pick them up. Like I'm sure you guys wanna see my little pookies. But they seem to be completely taking over the world! Or at least my corner of it, so it's hard not to think about them all the time. Apologies. Kezi must be Alicia's older sister, or else the lighting on some of those pictures could have been better. My vote is for "Kezzy" too. Go, Tim!!! Let us know. How exciting! Now just get Lissu in it with you, and Alloy will really be on its way! Was anybody waiting for a response from me? I can't remember now.
