That kind of damage certainly sounds like it could be from some severe inhalant allergy; also, I know that this time of year, RSV is quite prevalent and in some kids, quite deadly. I guess it's a respiratory virus that some kids breeze through and others don't. My niece was hospitalized last February, at about 18 months of age, with something quite similar, but managed to pull through it. My heart goes out to them, what a terrible decision to have to make. :: Thanks for your very kind words; I'll be sure to pass along your well wishes to the family. I couldn't even imagine the anguish they must be going through. :: One other thing for you, Robin, perhaps to pursue more privately--I have my grandparents' Bible from the early days of their marriage. It's Finnish, and while it is no rarity, and definitely nothing special (not leatherbound or anything), it has great sentimental value for me. It's quite brittle and will fall apart if I don't take care... how should I be caring for it? Can it be restored to a certain extent? :: I'm still working on improving my skills and knowledge of such things, but it's an area in which I hope to specialize to some extent. I'm working my way up through the somewhat brittle books so I can one day work on the ones that are practically dust! I'll look into my manuals at work to get more specific information pertaining to your book. Are the pages themselves brittle (any crumbling of the paper at the edges) or is it mostly the binding itself that's coming apart? What kind of material are the covers and spine made of? Also, this may sound strange to you, but... how do the pages smell? (there's a reason for this question, honest! :) If the pages are brittle, the best thing to do is probably to make an acid-free preservation style box for it, and possibly de-acidify the pages with a special solution if they aren't too far gone. The box will help it hold its remaining integrity & protect it from such elements as light exposure. Also the humidity level in the room where it's stored has a definite effect on the book's health. Please get in touch with me sometime & tell me the particulars! I can even make the box for you here if you tell me the book's exact dimensions. Please don't feel weird about taking me up on my offer if you want! I'm making a couple of boxes & doing a bind for various people... it's great practice :) Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 23:38:16 EST From: CJMark@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Thieving scumbags Ouch... Here is something you might want to check out. I just produced a commercial for a company called EARTHWEB. They handle a few different Dot com companies.. including Dice.com. It is a clearinghouse/headhunter company for Information Technology type people. It seems that they are one of the bigger ones doing this.. and the reports are good.. You might want to give it a shot. Break a leg! Mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 01:07:51 EST From: CJMark@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V5 #38 Hey there...
