Hi all, I'm also just back on-line after surviving the first 10 days of my new sons life. That was an experience. A real roller-coaster ride. I'm looking at life with a whole new perspective right now. Excellent. He's called Oskar by the way. There are some pics here if anyone is interested. (sorry to bore the rest but it's a dad-thing!) http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Shrine/7847/oskar_chiddick.htm Anyway. Lem, I was also really sorry to hear about your losses. We don't really know each other very well but believe me, I know what you have gone through. It's a real bitch. Even after you have got over the loss of all the stuff the knowledge that someone has invaded your privacy can be a real burden. Please do list the lost CD's for us and those of us that ebay will keep our eyes open for you. I have a spare CD copy of The Flat Earth which I was going to sell but hell, your need is far greater than mine right now. Send me your mail address and I'll have it in the post to you straight away. Life is a bitch sometimes but, contrary to many people beliefs, we're all very definitely in this together. Life philosophy: what goes around comes around. Take care all. Jon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 04:31:43 -0500 From: "Stephen M. Tilson" Subject: Alloy: Alloyites mentioned in new musical release! I am pleased to ANNOUNCE: Our own dear Louise "Lissu" Ulfstedt's single, "Shelter" has hit the stands - and "Alloyites everywhere" are thanked in the credits!!! WooHoo! Shelter was released in the European Community in November and it didn't look like it would make it stateside so I ordered a bunch of copies from Action Records (UK). Now, lo and behold just two days after my order arrived, Shelter is listed on both Cdnow.com *and* Amazon.com! Lissu, it seems you've hit the big time and gone global! I was going to offer my extra copies of Shelter to the Alloyites, but now that it is widely available I think I will use these copies as promos for a couple of local radio stations that are into dance and house styles. And we haven't even talked about the MUSIC yet! First off, Shelter is Lissu's composition. She wrote it in 1994, I think, but it didn't see production until late 1998. Since then, time was spent on remixes and publication hurdles. Her partner in this recording is Jori Hulkkonen. He arranged and produced the music and, imo, he did the most important mixes. Here is the CD track listing (the 12" version has the first three): Original mix Jori Hulkkonen mix Elegia's mix Original dub Some of you have heard Jori's mix. It was included as a b-side for The Flattery Earth! For those that haven't heard it, Shelter is a very danceable love song with good harmonic structure and a strong melody. Lissu's captivating voice soars and swings. I think I'm in love... I was dead chuffed to hear the original version again. Originally, Lissu sent me that version on cassette for inclusion on The Flattery Earth, but there were duplication problems with that dub. Although I like Jori's mix a lot, I am equally excited about what I think of as the "original" mix. It's a radio edit, whereas Jori's mix is a club edit and significantly different. Elegia's mix thrills me only a tiny bit, and I gather things were quite out of Lissu's hands regarding the inclusion of this musical non-sequitur. Elegia's mix has, certainly, some merit, but the modality and feel of the song is changed so much that Shelter's true identity is nearly riven from the mix. Everything else shines shines shines! Mary and I wrote a review of Shelter for Amazon.com. It'll be posted in a week or so after they check it for no-nos . . . Here's the publication details. I nearly gave up on this band at the end of last year, but weirdly despite the fact that we hadn't rehearsed for 3 months or so, as soon as we were back together the old magic clicked in again - it's cool being part of a unit that just WORKS!!!! Also although I hadn't played bass for months too I started coming out with these cool slap lines that sounded like they'd been lifted from some 70s funk record - the bass was just playing itself - nice! PBS Kids is the most popular area of the 85,000-page PBS.org Web site. The redesigned PBS Kids site will enable kids to write stories, respond to other kids, tell jokes and discover answers to puzzling questions. Site visitors can also access the official Web sites and related activities for their favorite PBS Kids television programs, including ARTHUR, DRAGON TALES, MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD, NODDY, TELETUBBIES, ZOBOOMAFOO and ZOOM. With the relaunch, PBS Kids will feature new areas providing information about kid-related content available through local PBS stations: "In Your Town" and "What's New?" When users click on these areas they can see local station information and links to local station Web sites. In the coming months, these links will expand to include information about local PBS Kids show character appearances, children's fairs, and birthday clubs. The "What's New?" area will feature a newspaper-style page with articles about new activities on pbskids.org, as well as stories written by children from across the country. Other features of the new site include: * "You Be the Judge": encourages kids to boost their media smarts with an activity that shows how to watch and listen with a critical eye and ear. This new feature, combined with the existing "Get Your Web License" activity, round out PBS's TechKnow media literacy area; * "Backstage at PBS": offers an offbeat and memory-jiggling timeline of PBS kids show milestones since 1968. This area also teaches kids about the behind-the-scenes action of television production with the interactive game, "Lights, Camera, Action!"; * "Learn All About It": aggregates subject-related sites for school-aged kids, and provides a weekly trivia teaser to promote fact-digging; * Ready to Learn: The content within PBS Kids and its affiliated sites is based on extensive focus group research with kids ages 4-12 to enhance the goals of PBS's Ready to Learn (RTL) Service. RTL combines PBS's award-winning educational children's programs with local seminars, mailings of resource materials and other efforts to help children prepare for success in school; * Easier access: The new site also features easier access using more visual clues and a "sonified" experience for those with the free Beatnik plug- in, allowing pre-readers to help direct their own navigation of the site; and * "Notes for Caregivers": aids parents, caregivers and teachers in using pbskids.org through usability tips and curriculum groupings. "The relaunched PBS Kids site empowers kids to make smart choices by helping them to think critically about media," said Michelle Miller, editor of PBS Kids Online. "At the same time, innovative content from PBS' national producers and local stations enables visitors from 2-14 to have fun creating their own PBS Kids experience." PBS, headquartered in Alexandria, Va., is a private, nonprofit media enterprise owned and operated by the nation's 346 public television stations. A trusted community resource, PBS uses the power of noncommercial television, the Internet and other media to enrich the lives of all Americans through quality programs and education services that inform, inspire and delight. Available to 99 percent of American homes with televisions and to an increasing number of digital multimedia households, PBS serves nearly 100 million people each week. More information about PBS is available at pbs.org. PBS.org, PBS' award-winning site on the World Wide Web, produces high- quality Web programming as it pioneers the convergence of television and the Internet. PBS Online features more than 85,000 pages of content, as well as companion Web sites for more than 400 PBS programs and specials. PBS.org has won the prestigious Webby Award for best TV Web site in 1998 and 1999. In January 2000, Yahoo! put PBS.org at the top of its list of the best Web sites of all time. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 08:53:36 EST From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Alloy: IS THERE AN ECHO IN HERE?
