Sorry, I havn't been around much lately, everyone. Thought I would check in. Lately I've just started reading the digest version of Alloy at work to keep up. Otherwise, I really don't have much time. Keith, how's the new place? Havn't heard from you since I helped you move in. BTW, I'm going to attempt the purchase of a house myself. I'm sick of paying rent (for the last 12 years). I just added it up and I've spent nearly 60k in rent that could have been *invested* in a house!... Ok, I feel stupid now. I am going to get a house! Even if I have to steal one!!! (Is that possible?) - -Irish music- I think I mentioned it before, but I've been playing with an Irish band in a coffee house for the last few months now and have really enjoyed it. Well, actually I'm 50% of the band, so I guess it's not *really* a band, yet. More like a couple of guys belting Celtic tunes with tin whistles, piano and a bodhran (Celtic drum), but it's a blast. I just happened in to the local coffee shop (www.commongroundsdenver.com) here in my neighborhood and there was this guy (Tim Sullivan) singing away. Passed me a sheet listing his repertoire and asked "Do you see anything you'd like to hear?" A real lively guy who gets everyone to participate. Well, I ended up chatting with him afterwards and we headed down the street for some Guinness. Nothing really came of it then, but the next week he had another guy there who played a guitar that he had played with on and off. I told them that they had inspired me to give my tin whistle a try and was now able to play *one* whole tune, which I demostrated to them on the way for some more Guinness (and Harp for the other guy). Well, next thing I know, I'm part of the band. (Wow! Those flute recorder lessons in 4th grade actually paid off!) So I learned a couple more tunes over the week and practiced singing a few songs I knew. Then my schedule soured and I couldn't make it on Tuesday nights. Well, Tim, invited me to meet him downtown at the sister-shop every other Wednesday. Meanwhile, the group at the other shop has swelled upwards to 8 people! Which is great for Irish music. It's my understanding that, at an Irish pub, everyone sings or plays an instrument. Now we've got to get the other shop that way as well. Tim told me that there is a guitarist and fiddle player (who I've heard once) who want to join us and I'm anxiously awaiting that. I've always thought I had a fairly average voice for a guy, but after all this singing, I discovered that I'm a tenor. Maybe even a high tenor, which perfectly complements Tim as he's on the low range. But, it's a lot of fun, so if anyone in the Denver area is interested, at least come see us once. If anything, it's a lot of fun. We perform the first and third Wednesdays of each month so our next performance is this Wednesday. Hope to see you there, Keith? ...And I was suddenly struck just now that I should try some Dolby tunes in the Irish way. (hmmm....) Anyway, for our schedule, don't bother going to the coffee shops page (www.commongroundsdenver.com) as it shows August's calendar (?), instead try www.celticevents.com and look for Tim Sullivan. ___________ JAMac (Dennis S. You'll have to come over and see it some time. Perhaps we could have a Rocky Mountain Alloy meeting and watch Live Wireless (which I now have). Thanks again for helping me move. Hope to see you there, Keith? Oh yeah, I think I may have to venture downtown. I may not be able to make this week, due to an early start I need to make this Thursday, but perhaps the next one. I had one the other night that had me waking up going "Thank Bira Bira it was only a dream." It was kind of a road-trip movie from hell that had myself, my friend (and lead singer of Shih-Tzu) Monica, and Thomas Dolby in it traveling together in a baby blue, '59 Caddy convertable. Monica and I got a gig in Sudbury but the kicker of it was we were playing a trio with Thomas Dolby. So before the gig we have to go pick up Thomas. I was so excited about playing with him I didn't stop to wonder why we were picking him up in Nashville Tennesee. We get to Thomas's house and we knock on the door and a silver haired man who looks 25 to 30 years older version of Thomas answers the door. I figure maybe it's Thomas' father. Well it turns out that it wasn't his dad, it was Thomas himself. Appearently Thomas had been pulling one over on the world by using old photos of himself from his youth and various body doubles (one of whome lives in L.A.) to convince the world he is a much younger man. The kicker too was he wasn't even english. "Born and raised in Tennesee" he told me in a heavy southern accent. I remember thinking "Robin is going to be so heartbroken to learn that Thomas' boyish good looks had long since faded." And faded was putting it mildly. The cigarettes he chained smoked and the Jack Daniels he was constantly gulping had really taken their toll on Thomas. He had not aged well at all. On the long car ride from Tennesee to Sudbury my friend Monica kept asking me "Are you sure that's Thomas Dolby?" I was at a loss for words. The Thomas Dolby that was stretched out in the back seat of the car was the most fowl mouthed, rude, crude, and cantankerous old fart I'd ever had the misfortune to meet. All the way to Sudbury every last ounce of hero-worship I had was being steadily eroded away. But I was still increadably eager to get the chance to perform with Thomas even though he was such a miserable old coot. Even though he was turning out to be such a total prick I couldn't deny his musical genius and help admiring that he was able to pull the wool over everyone's eyes for so long. The show in Sudbury was supposed to be his big "comming out" performance. He'd actually be on the stage himself instead of playing and singing backstage while his body double performed out front. I woke up while Thomas was sprawled in the backseat going off on some drunken and highly offensive rant, long before we ever made it to the show in Sudbury. It was one of those dreams that kind of make you wake up with a start and go "Whew... I'm gald that was just a dream." ..... OR IS IT!? Heheheheh!
