This is yet another thing I can add to that menacing pile of bureaucratic nazi bs that I've been seeing more and more of lately in this country. Terrorizing kids at school who don't shop at the Gap or listen to Billy Joel was only the beginning I see (huge scowl!!!) How convenient for the powers that be to have financial authority over creative work before it even leaves the writer's or artist's studio. What next, our minds can only think certain thoughts or we'll have to pay a fine? What's going on in LA is a spectacular example of Big Brother in action... but similar lines of thinking are everywhere in the US, from what I've heard. Very creepy. So many violations of civil/constitutional rights are going unchallenged every day it seems, because I think people are too scared to stand up for those in the minority (McCarthyism and its associated paranoias, alive and well - the media are only feeding people's fears rather than portraying facts realistically) Either it's that or it's an 'I've got mine' mentality, where people turn their backs and let oppression happen because it isn't happening to them or theirs...yet. Of course, politics go in cycles of extremes, and I'm afraid we're in a particularly nasty one now for people who want to get any creative work done, & then be left the hell alone in their private time. One question: do you think all the new freedoms the Internet is offering to artists is beginning to put a bug up the collective bureaucratic arse, and that's why they're raging so out of control lately? You know, this evening, I was invited to a gathering to meet and listen to the Foreign Minister of Chechnya. I was grateful for the opportunity to attend, since I was one of the few non-press & non-academic people there. Most of the press guys were wire service people who looked like they didn't have two dimes to rub together. The only person who didn't look like he was at poverty's door was the CNN dude next to me, all polished and well-manicured. But, hey, that's CNN and that's showbiz, kids. Wire service stringers work for peanuts. Dang, one guy I saw tonight made me feel like I should adopt him and give him my coat and a good meal. I doubt that another tax and Big Brother's evil eye would encourage him to continue asking questions and tapping away at his stories. Why try to stifle creativity, open discussion, and the free dissemination of information by kicking the messenger in the teeth? There are enough obstacles to pass without creating an additional ridiculous hindrance. Writing well ain't easy, kids. Everyone can use a keyboard, but not everyone can write in a way that people *want* to read the words. Take it from someone who earns her keep by writing and talking. Did that make any sense? Sorry, I just got a bit ticked off. Will they start taxing musicians who compose at home now? Can you imagine someone coming to inspect some guy's garage where his band practices??? I actually invited the woman who runs my office to come see my home office set up (a computer in the hallway between the living room and the bathroom) and she declined, despite my offer of tea and muffins. :-) Grumbling, Melissa, tonight's guest curmudgeon - -- Melissa R.
