[Paul Baily Subject: Alloy: I'll show you mine if you show me yours... Hi y'all, Well, here we are. 2000. What does it hold for us all? Good things I hope. Of course, I've got to ask, what were your new year's resolutions and have you broken them yet? Mine? Well I've not been a big fan of making them since I never seem to hold to them but this year I thought of one. My new year's resolution: no regrets. I don't mean that as a 'I don't care', people who know me well know that I'm all too proficient at (figuratively) beating myself up about things I think I could have said more carefully or done more thoughtfully, no, I mean it from the perspective of living a whole lot more carefully so that I don't have to look back on this year with regret about saying this or doing that. Three days in and I've not broken it. So, come on, 'fess up, what are yours?! cheers, Paul. Deary me, I'm rather behind with my mail, but here's what I've been up to. Not a lot. My wife and I are not ones for going out to New Year's Eve Parties. She used to live in a pub, so we have had our fill of New Year revelling in years gone by. Sometimes we will visit friends, or they'll visit us. As I'm still having a little trouble getting around, we stayed at home and my sister-in-law came round to see in the new year with us. I was on-call in case there were any problems with the kit our 'Millennium Watch' staff were using, but got no calls at all, and as has been said by others, the Y2K problems failed to materialise. We watched the BBC's coverage of the Millennium celebrations around the world (including the 'River of Fire' in London which turned out not to be the spectacle that people were expecting). I popped in to work for an hour today, to check that our servers are up and everything seems to be working as it should. That's about it. As far as resolutions are concerned, I gave up making them a few years ago, as I never seem to keep them, or rather, I tend to forget about them after a few days. I shall try to be more tidy in the office; I shall try not to put off jobs that I'm not keen on doing, but these are ongoing personal objectives of mine so they're not really resolutions. With regard to Christmas separations, I'm sorry to hear that two or three Alloyites have recently split. Indeed there IS something about Christmas and New Year which tends to bring relationship problems to a head. For one thing, you tend to spend more time with your family over the festive season, and any minor problems seem to become magnified. The prospect of this can be too much for some people, so there are many splits around this time. My wife works for a solicitors, and knows very well that there are LOTS of splits AFTER Christmas/New Year, following family blow-ups. I consider myself lucky to still be married after 24 years. We've had our ups and downs in this time, but have managed to ride them out, and we're still together. And finally, weather wise it's been mixed up here in the North West of England, but we've missed most of the extremes. We've had quite a lot of rain, some frosty mornings, some moderately windy days, but nothing exceptional. That's the end of the Mancunian news. Happy New Year to all. It's "Don't change anything, becuase you're having a lot of fun right now the way it's all going." I like that kind. They're hard to break. I made one a few years ago about doing sit-ups, and I was doing up to 40 a day, into May. But then I decided to sleep in every morning instead. Eh, close enough. Just thought I'd throw that story in there. - -Cay __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo!
